UM Hockey vs Simon Fraser (or, how B1G+ lowers expectations even further)

Some game notes first:

  • UM seemed fairly sloppy throughout; passing wasn't crisp, pucks were turned over, pucks weren't held in at the blue line, etc. Probably to be expected with so many new players and returning players stepping up into new roles.
  • The talent disparity was evident. UM players regularly carried the puck around and through the Simon Fraser defense right in on goal. Throwing the puck on net seemed like 50/50 to score a goal.
  • Two early penalties, and then a few more (some offsetting) later in the game.
  • Moldenhauer got his first.
  • McGroarty got a couple, one of them very pretty.
  • Barczewski started in goal, West came in later (and gave up a weird long-distance carom goal?).
  • PP generated some chances, mostly on individual talent but also some decent passing. Simon Fraser goalie stonewalled first PP.
  • At one point, a ref called them "Simon Francis" while announcing a penalty.

And...on the broadcast:

  • B1G+ stream announcer audio was about 48 seconds delayed at the beginning of the game.
  • Some 8 minutes in, they just dropped the announcer audio entirely and played the arena audio.
  • Later, a graphic popped up that just said "Videoboard stream, no announcer audio".
  • The audio would also randomly have a staticy, robotic sound from certain camera feeds.
  • Still no chyron so without announcer audio, there was zero indication of current score or gametime.

Hard to draw too many conclusions given the talent differential.  Other than that BTN+ continues to consistently perform at the technical level of a 1987 local access cable TV station.

My experience is that BTN minus is jumbotron video coupled with student audio or radio simulcast.  It is embarrassing that they charge for it.  I bought it once to watch hockey and found out what it was and then cancelled.
