Trey Burke named Ohio's Mr. Basketball
What a great accomplishment for him. I wish him the best of luck in the state tourney this weekend and can't wait for him to get on campus.

I'm glad that he wasn't a victim of the "Michigan Effect"
We're getting OHIO's Mr. Basketball. Good for Trey, and good for the program.
Could have had Mr. Basketball in M and Ohio this year.

Actually he didn't get screwed.

It was henton that got screwed....I mean even amir could have been said to have been screwed. I have no idea how anderson won it.
WOO! Great! Beilein can recruit, I guess.
I think he has a true eye for talent. Also his assistants seems to be very good so far.
Well he fired all his old ones, right? His new assistants seem to be pretty damn good. They really made strides with a lot of kids this year.
Ya, I meant to say his new assistants.
He kept Meyer around.
Not saying anything new here, but we have a great Men's BBall staff.
will that put an end to the Beilein can't recruit post?
Chalk one up for Coach B., reeling in Ohio's Mr. Basketball. And also for Trey, obviously a quality kid for choosing Michigan despite being from the wrong state. The future's so bright I gotta wear shades!

I escaped -- others have followed. Trey just joined the long list of those who escaped to the great mitten!

"Only the good ones".
Were there any other top recruits in contention?
From umhoops.com
"Burke won Mr. Basketball over several other Division I recruits including Aaron Thomas (Florida State), Trey Lewis (Penn State), Travis Trice (Michigan State), Traevon Jackson (Wisconsin), Pat Forsythe (West Virginia) and others."
Thomas is a big time athlete. Ranked 49th best in the nation according to rivals. Had offers from cinci and Clemson among others. Also great to see him get it over Trice.
Trey Burke
Trey Lewis
Travis Trice
Trevon Jackson
If/when I ever have a son, I at least now know what the first 2 letters of his first name will be. Glad I got that cleared up -- that alone makes this a productive morning for me.
I think Travis Trice from Dayton who is gonna play for Sparty.
Wlubd wins for more complete answer.
Don't overlook that he also posted more quickly than you.
<br>Congratulations Trey!
Wow, thats awesome. MSU got Michigans Mr. basketball but theres nothing wrong with getting Ohio's. Awesome stuff, thanks for posting.
On another note, tonight is not worthy of a drinking thread, but i'm on the liquor hard. One of my best friends is making is NHL debut tonight. So if you happen to catch the Calgary vs. San Jose game at 10pm, spread some good karma for my pal and cheer for Greg Nemisz on Calgary. I realize that this isn't relevant the thread, but I am very excited about it.
but im just wondering if that will raise his ratings?
I think it is possible with the numbers he has put up over the season and getting to the state championship game. I'm just not sure how often they re-rank players.
He's already ranked pretty high, and is highly scouted so its not like the services haven't seen him. Having said that, this certainly can't hurt.
Pretty big honor.
Understatement. Since 2001 the award has gone to Lebron (3x), Jamar Butler, O.J. Mayo (2x), Diebler, Buford and Sullinger (2x).
Too many Buckeyes on that list but definitely good company to be in.
The idea of winning Mr. Basketball as a sophomore is ridiculous. Not saying he didn't deserve, but can you imagine being a great senior basketball player and losing the award to this sophomore who seems like he's from a different planet?
Just more of a reason on why I can't wait for next years baskeball season.
His game looked a lot like his cousin's when I watched his film. Goes to the basket hard so he'll help our ft attempts per game.
To me he seems to play like Darius, but a better shooter.
Is that you Fred Jackson?
Love that hyperbole randy.
+1

Of course, comparing a poster to Fred Jackson is Jacksonian in and of itself.
Think it's too late to make a "Trey for trey" joke?
didn't come on board because then it could have been "Trey to Trey for Trey ... got it!" Congrats, Trey Burke.
I like that both he and Brudidge can be worked in slowly next year (versus recent history with freshmen being counted on early to not just play but produce.)
Speaking of Trey Ziegler, I didn't see him play this year but looked like he had a very solid freshman campaign with the Chips.

Love that the Dispatch article does t mention his college choice.
The AP story is much better in that regard:
Besides being a great scorer, team leader, big winner and the 2011 Associated Press Mr. Basketball award winner, Columbus Northland's Trey Burke is one courageous young man.
A University of Michigan signee, the 6-foot-1 point guard wears his maize and blue everywhere around Ohio's capital city. Needless to say, some people take umbrage at a Michigan fan in the heart of Ohio State country.
"They try to give me a hard time here when I go to the store or to the barbershop or something like that," Burke said with a laugh. "But I know it's all love at the end of the day. I'm going to have a lot of support from a lot of family and friends when I go there."
I can't recall where I saw this, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Beilein said earlier this year that Burke was Michigan's first scholarship player out of Ohio in a very long time--possibly going back to Eric Riley (1990-93). Pretty nice to nab Ohio's Mr. Basketball when Michigan has had such little success recruiting in that state.
I think that's right. I can't think of any other Ohioans since then.
Thanks for confirming. I also wanted to make a correction to the dates I gave for Eric Riley--should have been (1988-93). He redshirted in 88-89.
Can't wait to get him on the court. One of the biggest problems we had this season IMO was not having a true point guard to back up darius. Stu is a great ball handler, but it looks like sometimes he has trouble getting into a rhythm when he goes from 2 guard to point during a game. I was hoping corey person would back up darius this season, but i guess he didn't develope like a few of the players from last year thought he would.
47% from three!
Is the 3 pt line shorter in high school?
I think it's the same as the college distance. Keep in mind, though, that perimeter defenses are a lot worse.

Good thing our offense is all about getting open 3s then.

Top of the key for HS in Michigan or 19'9".
March 23rd, 2011 at 10:14 PM ^
I believe they just moved it back a foot or so a few years ago. It's in between high school and NBA distance.
Correct. Still 19'9 in h.s., but 20'9 in college.
