Today's RR w/Sam Webb

Submitted by CincyBlue on
- The news broke too late last night that Murphy is heading to Maryland. Doesn't have any info yet. -Said things are changing daily for Michigan and recruits and that we should expect some surprises in this class. - He is watching the juniors today at Army combine.

Good for Murphy. I wouldn't want to go somewhere knowing I'm a tag along with the guy UM really wanted. Maryland wants him for who HE is. Best move for him. I never liked those package deals.

I don't really believe that RR offers scholarships to one player just to get a friend b/c they claim to be a package I do believe RR looks for synergies on teams where they can offer multiple prospects b/c it's more efficient and maybe more effective, but I'd be surprised if RR is just giving away scholarships to unwanted players. The same was said about Witty last year to get Denard and RR seemed to be working pretty hard to get Witty enrolled just recently (even if it didn't plan out).

And I think most college coaches would agree: the second player in the package has to have at least a certain amount of upside in order to make the package work. Though, Murphy was a solid 3* DE recruit - we probably wouldn't have recruited him alone, but he's not entirely useless, either.

I have wondered how often this happens in regard to recruiting players from a specific school one year in order to increase the chances of a landing a top-notch talent from that same school the next year. For example, how much influence did the recruitment of Braxton Miller have on our decision to offer scholarships to the Talbott brothers?

With Murphy off the table and a scholarship freed-up, that could be a good thing. I know the coaches are on the road right now beating the bushes and trying to lock down recruits. I would love to see some big surprises (positive ones).

The more cynical alternative is that we don't land Grimes either and they go to Maryland as package. On yesterday's show Ira said Sam's gut-feeling was not as strong as it was previously (re: Grimes), Brian replied that he wasn't as worried b/c of Tom VH's recent conversation with Grimes. I'd like to hear Sam elaborate on Grimes, I'm not sure what exactly has changed but I'm concerned/interested.

After last year's signing day Decommits, I'm not sure if a decommit would be a huge surprise unless of course it was someone who's been on-board for awhile and no word leaked out beforehand about said person even wavering or having trouble qualifying. Perhaps I'm being optimistic and thinking surprises might be a good thing, hopefully a surprise commit or two.

i dont know about you guys, but if we cant get the guys we want, i dont think we should settle for lesser guys. we could save a couple scholarships for guys like mcreynolds, evans, tanner, depriest, hollowell, and the other studs that i know we are in on.

The surprises usually seem to balance themselves out. Some decommit from UM, and some decommit from other programs to attend UM. I'm pretty sure this class will come in close to "right on the numbers" no matter what surprises we get between now and signing day.
