Thursday Night College Football

VA Tech is taking it to the Wolfpack after a defensive first half featuring five punts a side.

This is important because the Wolfpack are one of the teams that people are holding up as Clemson victories. The more Ls they take the better for the good guys.

Go Hokies.

Clemson is a joke.

UGA, OSU, UM, and yes (Bama when healthy) are the best teams in the country.

I hope Tennessee continues causing chaos in the the SEC of course.

Clemson, unfortunately, probably goes undefeated playing nobody and gets in.

In certain cases I've learned that I'm happier when I choose to enjoy the misery of whomever loses.

I mean, I'll probably grudgingly want ND to win that game, but... I'll enjoy watching them fail to do so, should it come to that.

Concur with others: Clemson seems like a good team, but not on the same level. Their schedule is not good and they haven't looked good against it.

Both teams airing it out and taking the deep shots this half they were eschewing in the first half.

Mullen was dead on about taking shots to open up the game.

I'm finding that with the increasingly obvious and visible connections between the Ravens and Michigan, including specific schemes on both defense and particularly offense, I am getting somewhat invested in the success the Ravens have on the field. Their success validates what we are doing, at least in my mind. So long as their offense keeps working in the NFL, ours has a good basis for success in college.

I mean it wouldn't hurt to get a Lamar Jackson type to succeed JJ at QB but you know what I mean.

It’s Jim and John’s (Jimmy John’s?) master plan.

Jim is basically running a minor league for the Ravens. John will then draft only UM players because they’ve spent 3+ years in the system and know all the plays. The two brothers become interchangeable and alternate coaching on Saturdays and Sundays.

I'm not sure this is really that far off.  Even if it isn't "planned" football is a sport that would benefit the most from a true minor league system.  What holds back most first year pros isn't talent, speed, or strength - it's their understanding of assignments in a new system.  If player A and player B are relatively equal in physical attributes being able to know that one is more likely to execute in your scheme seems like important information.  Even just being able to get a few more games out of 1st year player instead of waiting until mid season until they can execute your offense/defense is a huge bonus.  We've seen it extend to coaches within the two systems.  It just affords more opportunities for young coaches to grow and continue to learn a system without worrying that taking a college job is going to delay their pro career tract.

Oh, Hokies, why are you you? :(

ETA: I will say, running the victory formation out of the shotgun does have its benefits in terms of ridiculous statistics.  NC State's last drive was 9 plays for 9 yards in 5 1/2 minutes, thanks to 16 lost yards on three kneeldowns.
