For those closer to Brian's thinking

Submitted by peterfumo on

This is my first post on this site. I have listened to Brian on radio and have read him on this site. It take it he is in the "rebellious" faction described on his post today. What is unclear to me re Brian is this. Did he think DB should have fired RR after OSU game and aggresively moved to hire Harbaugh, or was he ok with waiting until after Gator Bowl to fire RR but should then have aggresively gone after a Dan Mullen? Does he also think Hoke was DB's first choice all along, or does he think he hired him b/c he thought Hoke was the best he could do? Heaven help us if the latter was true. FWIW, I think I would have been most happy with Mullen.

Wait, you read the MGoBoard and that is the dumbest post you have ever read?

Anyways, some people, yes, are dumb enough to need a disclaimer to distinguish the fact that you can criticize the guy doing the hiring without criticizing the guy who got hired.  If someone was recently hired at my place of employment and I thought the hiring manager botched it up by not hiring the right person right away and instead waited until the project was way behind schedule, I would want to criticize them.

It does NOT mean that the wrong person was hired or that the person who was hired is an idiot or that person shouldn't have taken the job (I am not sure why that is even mentioned)- it's that the hiring manager should have gone about their process differently.

If that's above your head try to read it slower, Dad.

I'd try e-mailing him if you want to know his opinion (see the contact link at the top).

Personally to try and answer your questions, waiting until after the gator bowl was a stupid decision regardless of the outcome. You can't leave everyone in the program up in the air like that for over a month. The only logical assumption is that DB and Harbaugh had something arranged verbally for him to come after the Orange Bowl which fell apart. That's the risk you take in doing that and it's unnecessary. If you were going to make a change, do it after OSU and if Harbaugh didn't want to play ball, you have time and a wealth of candidates to do an actual search.

Hoke could not have been the first choice. If he was, he'd have been here Dec.1, plain and simple. Brandon saying otherwise is insulting to be perfectly honest. I know he has to say it, but still...

is not here to make sure that recruits' families are happy.

Beyond that, if a family is upset because the AD lets Michigan Players and Coaches play their first bowl game in 3 years without the circus of a coaching search (or worse with a new coach or interim coach) then I question if they are focusing on the important issues.

he's the athletic director.  He met with recruits when they came on official visits.  It sure as shit is part of his job to consider recruiting.

And I love the idea that by waiting Brandon avoided a circus.  The only thing people could talk about before the bowl game was whether or not Rodriguez was going to get fired.

No, but he is here to do what's best for the program. I don't see how anyone could argue that our program in the short term (and maybe in the long term?) is better off having announced a coach Jan.13th as opposed to 5-6 weeks ago.

The program needs to be based on more than one game. Brandon himself has said that many times, albeit in a different context. Putting off firing RR for 6 weeks as a favour to the players/coaches may have been good for them, but it wasn't good for the program, which should be the bigger priority for the AD.

Brandon botched the deal.  He knew he was going to fire RR well before the bowl.  He was waiting thinking he could get JH after Jan 1.  He miscalculated and then had to go to plan C when plans A (JH) and B (LM) failed.  Now we are in a mess.  trying to revamp the program with no recruits and the wrong talent on the team fort he new Coaches style.  Simply brilliant.  this could not have gone worse.

That thinks this thing had two roads down which to go.

Road 1: Harbaugh was IN. Done deal. Then the NFL comes a callin' I think Harbaugh started listening--more than before. He probably still would have come to UM, but made it known that if he had a couple good years and the NFL was still knocking at his door, wellll....And brandon said, "Jim, you are either Michigan for the long term or we put in a large buyout that the Detroit Lions will have to pay when they want a new coach in a couple years AGAIN. (sarcasm) Jim say: "Go fark yerself. I don't deal with no stinking buyout Besides, you are a former Michigan football player, and I know for a fact you can't spell buyout because you are dumb and got a crappy major and no one will EVER hire you. Punk"

Road 2: Rodriguez had a chance to save his arse by winning the bowl game. Not close, not being competitive, but WINNING.

AND, brandon absolutely did the right thing by letting Rodriguez and the boys have a bowl game as a reward for all the shit.

We might not like it, because the internets demands we get what we want even before we thought of it.

But Brandon is not the internets.

I believe DB believes in the players receiving a chance to play in a bowl that was earned. Why take it away from them. Leave the distractions of finding a new coach and staff. Let the staff, secondly, enjoy a bowl game.

Previously, JH, in numerous talks, stated he was a Michigan Man but he still wants the epitome of a Super Bowl win as a coach. DB, I believe, knew this.

The search continued behind the scenes, LM, through his contacts, used Michigan to negotiate his existing contract higher. DB decided not to interview LM.

From many sources BH emerged as the candidate of choice. It was a choice DB wanted from the data and answers he amassed.

Now, it is time to head off the divisive comments and speculation and get behind BH.

The ball is in our court now. Support our team.  Support our players. Most of all, support Brady and his emerging staff in recruiting.

Bonanza-

What are you talking about?

Harbaugh stated he was a Michigan Man but wanted the "epitome of a Super Bowl win?"  What is the epitome of a Super Bowl win?  A Super Bowl win?  When did Harbaugh say anything of the sort?

Miles wasn't offered?  Really?  LSU seems to think he was.  And LSU is extending his contract but not raising his salary as you suggest.

I'll support Coach Hoke because he coaches Michigan and he is a passionate guy.  That's more than RR ever got from his predecessor or most of his former players and so-called Michigan Men.

the 100 pt threshold?  I'd generally discourage it.  I say "generally" because sometimes it happens that someone relatively new posts something interesting.

I waited until til I crossed the 1000 pt threshold (not purposefully - it just worked out that way), and I've only ever created one new thread.

I don't understand anxiety to create new threads.

Brandon torched a recruiting class to hire a guy who would have agreed to take the job at any point, NQA. On top of this, Brian and others (including yours truly) think hiring Hoke because he's had a couple good seasons and knows the words to the victors does not make him more desirable than other coaches.

...has one of those.  Why not offer him the job then?  You can't say that just because he got a ring as a position coach, that qualifies him.  You need more to back it up like, he was position coach at possibly our best position on the team.  Something like that.

The latest from the recruiting services is that M is 36th. If so, DB knew what the consequences of firing RR so late would be. Both DB and MSC ought to be held accountable.

Anyone who reads the blog should know exactly why Brian is pissed.  Year 4 of Rich Rodriguez was superior to every option except for Harbaugh in his mind.  We find out that DB knew Harbaugh wasn't really in the mix and he proceeded to fire RR anyway, with no real succession plan in place other than OMGOOZLE PANIC HIRE CASE CLOSED and there's no real excuse for that.  The one thing that would unite the fan base is winning, and RR was set up to do that in Year 4 as long as the stuffed beaver was coaching the defense and GERG wasn't.  That is my main beef with this whole thing.  I would rather have seen 1 more year or Rodriguez in a win or go home year then scrap everything and start over with an unproved head coach.  I guess I kind of mixed what I think Brian's opinion and mine in there.
