There Could be Four Michigan QBs Starting for Power 5 Teams This Season
Just an interesting fact that probably doesn't mean anything. If current depth charts hold, there could be FOUR quarterbacks who have played for Michigan starting for Power Five teams this season:
J.J. McCarthy, Michigan
Cade McNamara, Iowa
Joe Milton, Tennessee
Alan Bowman, Oklahoma State
This has to be a record for a single season, right? Ohio State never had four of its quarterbacks starting for different teams in one year, has it?
I would include Dylan McCaffrey even though N. Colorado isn't Power 5.
Dan Vilari @ Syracuse (moved to TE, but still) would fit the P5 criteria.
Tyler Shough is a former processed Wolverine commit and still metaphorically kicking!
DMac has graduated and moved on
Does Ohio State have four starting QB’s in the NFL over the last decade?
Yes.
In context, sadly yes. One may eventually be a HOF'er. Again, in context of the thread.
Are you talking about Fields or Burrow? They definitely don't get to claim Joe.
Yes Burrow.
If OSU can't claim him then we can't claim Cade, Milton or Bowman. I clearly said "in context" twice. Burrow was in Columbus for 3 years.
Did Burrow ever start for OSU? Milton and Cade definitely did for Michigan. Only Bowman would be disqualified with that criteria.
If Michigan ever attempts to claim Joe Milton as "our own" I think we should drop any and all objections to OSU doing likewise with Burrow.
Definitely. Claiming Bowman is weird too. He didn't start his career here, didn't start a game here, and isn't finishing his career here. Weird to talk about him as "ours". Not sure how that's supposed to be a brag on Michigan's part.
Milton was the starter at the beginning of 2020. Had our entire team not flamed out that year, Milton included, and the rest of the world due to COVID he would have been the man. I think you can claim him almost as much as Speight. I hope he has a stellar year, and I'm still going to claim his Uncle Rico thows, but any success he has is going to be at Tennessee and not a Michigan other than the glorious Minnesota game. (Remember Murderface's diving upside down touchdown?)
I agree with you, but all of his progress at QB has been at, and because of, UTenn. How much 'progress' there has actually been will be on full display beginning in late August. Was his bowl game performance another Minnesota-like effort, a one-off? Or was it real?
I don't think we are "claiming" Milton. But he was recruited by UM; learned from the coaches here; started multiple games at UM. He got his chance; got passed over by another QB. He definitely qualifies as a Michigan QB.
Burrow did get I believe 3 starts when the top dog went down. I think it was Haskins.
Then, in spring ball the next season he obliterated Haskins in the spring game and then left when it was apparent Urban wasn't going to move off Haskins.
This is one of the reasons I submit Ryan Day is not real good at eval or dev of QBs. Day gets hired at OC/QB in '17. Its obvious from the get go he is head-coach-in-waiting. He coaches the group for a year, and after the '18 spring game when Burrow decides he's had enough, the future head coach doesn't raise his hand and say "Burrow is my guy". Urban was on his way out. Day had some pull at this point. And there is simply no doubt at this point Burrow is better than Haskins, especially at the stuff Day wants to run.
This is professional malpractice on Day's part.
I wouldn’t say “malpractice.” Haskins was a 1st round pick who put up huge numbers when he was at OSU. This wasn’t a Cade v. JJ competition/comparison.
Yeah it was close enough to where you give the benefit of the doubt to the returning starter
Tate Martell was the returning starter in '18. Haskins & Burrows were fighting for 2nd spot.
Over 2 spring games ('17 & '18) Burrow owned Haskins, throwing for 11.4 yards per attempt to Haskins' 7.4.
And Burrow obviously had the better college career, winning a Natty and compiling video game stats in a much tougher conference.
This was a failure on Day's part. He picked the wrong guy.
Burrow won a Natty compiling video game stats in a much tougher conference. Even at the college level Burrow was the better QB.
Dan Villari too, maybe not qb anymore but is at Syracuse.
Somebody(ie Harbaugh,)has an eye for talent.🤩
Who will be the best of the 4?
Seriously? Is this a serious question you're actually asking? As if it isn't perfectly clear which of those four is the best QB?
JJ might be better than Cade. But it's not perfectly clear.
Hmm… I’ll pick a player whose name begins with JJ.
I would say this could be a rough season for OK State if Michigan's 4th best option last year is their starter.
Maybe yes, maybe no. He got plenty of playing time in his first three years at Texas Tech, where his career was derailed by injury. He hasn't played much at Michigan, obviously, but he'll still be in his sixth year.
I don't expect him to play well enough to get drafted but I wouldn't be surprised if he had a good season.
Although he didn't get to play much at Michigan, he still may have improved during that year.
Added to the foundation gained in his previous years he had another year of practice time, of learning and gaining an understanding of different offensive and defensive schemes, a year of watching quarterbacks and defenses from the sideline and watching film.
And a year of recovery from his injury and maximizing his physical ability aided by the best conditioning and dietary staff in college football - maybe the best anywhere.
Yeah, Bowman seems like a nice guy and was once a solid QB but feels like injuries really robbed him of that P5-level starter ability. But who knows - it's hard to take too much from the brief time he played at UM.
Was his problem injuries or talent? My recollection is that he lit it up as a freshman and was subsequently "relegated," prompting his transfer to Michigan.
He was a hree star recruit coming out of high school but played early and did pretty well as a freshman. He did have a pretty bad run of injuries: partially collapsed lung (!) and shoulder.
Pretty sure we all have two of those, what a sissy
Maybe & maybe not, but Bowman was never a B1G QB and he may thrive in that conference. I wish him well either way.
Cool bit of info. Thanks for posting.
In addition to other suggestions above, it might be one more once coaches learn that I have college eligibility left.
The Michigan Difference
Is losing players that become starters elsewhere something to be proud of? That's like boasting about having a lot hot ex-wives.
Your analogy only works if you had multiple wives and some left for playing time; while hot, they couldn't compete with the hottest wife. This is something to be proud of.
His analogy works better in Utah.
New to Mgoblog and don't know how to give upvotes but had to give you props for your Utah comment. Gave me a chuckle. Also think your user icon picture is cool.
Thanks. If I remember, you get the upvote ability after you get 100 points. The icon was created by someone who did it in a ms paint thread from back in the day. I liked it too and asked if I could use it. Miss the ms paint threads.
Thanks Hail-Storm! Now i can participate more in the dialogue. Appreciate it!
Bold prediction (or the hawtest of takes):
2023 CFP Teams - undefeated Michigan, 1-loss Iowa (to Michigan in the BTCG), Tennessee, and Oklahoma State
I was stuck at 3. It came as a surprise to find out that a Michigan QB was the QB for Michigan.
I can't think of another program with four, but 2019 Georgia had a decent QB diaspora:
- Jake Fromm (Georgia)
- Justin Fields (OSU)
- Jacob Eason (Washington)
Meanwhile, Stetson Bennett was a redshirt sophomore.
