I'll also mention this real quick — I received this comment on yesterday's "There IS..." post from user Imjesayin:

…too many of these posts.

It’s not really interesting to anyone but the 9 people who comment on these for the last 99 days.

It’s like the uncle who gives you noogies every Christmas for decades even when you’re 40.

Retire it already. Like Draftageddon.

Just sayin’…

Here is my response. Since it was later in the day I doubt many people saw it, so I wanted to bump it to this thread, hopefully to open the door for some honest feedback and conversations about the future of this wonderful tradition.

Appreciate the feedback!

While the surface-level of the posts (namely, the title) inevitably remains the same and repetitive, I do my best to keep things as interesting and fresh as possible. This is done not only by rotating the player featured in the OP (and maximizing the possibility of favorites still being featured by including month and weeks into the countdown) — for more dedicated readers, this allows for some incredible finds on these players’ wikipedia pages, especially surrounding what they did before and after their time in Ann Arbor — but by posting different videos (this day is one of the rare exceptions) and features that highlight relevant topics every offseason.

This year was mainly a celebration of the glorious 2021 season (about as new as it gets), and in light of the continued prominence of the NIL market, a renewal of the spotlight on current players of every corresponding number in regards to their brand/products/charities/social media/stories! We also revisited the ongoing activism by players of certain numbers surrounding the Anderson scandal, celebrated the coaching tenure of the recently-passed Gary Moeller with about a week+ of featuring some of his players, and gave a look at MVictors’ Football Uniform timeline to see how the program has evolved fashion-wise up to this past year’s new experimentation in regards to helmet stickers and jersey combos. We even elevated some of the Wolverines’ historic highlights against USC and UCLA in light of the impending new realities of conference expansion.

In the past, we’ve explored many other facets of what makes Michigan Football what it is, such as the season t-shirts, the evolution of MGoBlog’s “The Story”, last year’s in-depth celebration of the art of the physical ticket stub, and even the sights and sounds of the Michigan Marching Band! I’m sure I’m still forgetting some stuff — you’ll get a more complete look when I post a document listing the full history and scope of “There are…” since I first took it over full-time in 2018 in tomorrow’s finale.

With all that considered, I am still ALWAYS open to any suggestions on how to make the countdown interesting to as many readers as possible. Please let me know below if you have any requests or cool ideas anyone! I am always looking to expand.

Lastly, of course, if this annual ritual is no longer of interest to a substantial enough group of people, I would have NO problems bringing it to an end and getting the time and sleep that is sacrificed for it to myself and other things (for those unaware, I AM a current student who is very involved academically and extracurricularly). It IS my understanding currently, however, that “There are…” is still beloved (for some more than ever) around these parts, so I am fully prepared to keep it going (and keep it as varied and exciting as possible) as for as long as it makes sense.

I hope this comment (and tomorrow’s final post for 2022) can open up a honest discussion on what the future of the countdown holds, if there is a future at all!

And, as legendary THE_KNOWLEDGE has been known to say, comments...commence.

Or we don't love them, we just know not to click the damn link.

It's just like the ads.

You do have a choice whether you click them or not. Not sure why people get so upset about it. I don't like it, so I don't click (unless it's zero and I never have to see it for another 250 or so days).

I’m glad we have these threads and whenever I do look at them there is always at least one thing interesting to me.

Inconceivable to me that someone would find space to complain about this. I feel like Woody Harrelson in “The People vs. Larry Flint”: “If you don’t like Hustler magazine! DON’T READ IT!”

JWG, keep doing what you do! I don't think I've ever commented on a There Are thread, but during the run up to the season I always read it when I visit the site. They are fun and informative.

Some people just enjoy being contrarians for the sake of being a contrarian. Instead of stealing others joy, one should just ignore a thread that they don't like. You know what it's about, you don't prefer it, yet you still click on to discourage an OP? Something's wrong with that picture. Just scroll on.

Thanks for your work, JWG. Shining a light on the long line of Michigan Men who have enriched hundreds of my Saturdays has been fun for me. Most people want to be seen. Some want to earn it by performing good works (e.g. JWG), some just want to tear things down on a faceless internet.  I know which car I want to ride in.

Cant wait! Watching Sparty look like a 3 nutted ball sack last night just makes today that much sweeter. I look for Cade to have an almost prefect game and our D to be relentless and as fast as we’ve ever saw at M. The receiver room and running backs are as good as anyone in the country. Harbaughs truly stocked this team for years of success.
