Thanks to the Bentley for their new football film archive and enjoy!
Please stop. Enjoy your summer. I'll give a fuck about Football come fall
I totally get those feelings, I share a ton of them right now, to be honest.
Others, however, still have the enthusiasm to the point where they "can't wait."
This post is for those people to click on. I admire their innocence and will never stop for them.
Go Blue!
A man of the people.
If you don’t like these posts, stop reading them. Nobody’s forcing you at gunpoint to read them.
Anyway, Rick's hair is worth the click.
Boo this man
please post your season ticket location, so i know where not to sit.
You did say please and I understand the sentiment however some must do what some must do.
I don't often self-indulge in these posts outside of #99 each year, but I got personal news yesterday that makes such a move worth it.
I am actually going to be a Tenor Saxophone in the Michigan Marching Band this fall!!! It fills the hole of offseason hype that I've been suffering from, to say the absolute least. I feel weird as I am fully aware that it hasn't hit me, but the second I put that uniform on I know I'll cry like a baby.
Anyway, in honor of that – I encourage everyone to post videos of their favorite MMB performances. Here's a good starting point: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCCwd_DdUjVmGdqPafNcjxg.
(Press "Source" at the top of the text box, type <oembed>, paste link, then type </oembed> after to post a vid).
I'll get things started with an awesome vid of the '87 edition of the iconic once-a-year "cake" formation, which I re-watched and enjoyed tonight in celebration:
I want to personally congratulate you on this. I played primarily Tenor Sax myself from 6th grade thru my first year of college, including 4 years of HS Marching Band. Also dabbled with the Alto and Baritone Sax and even my mother's soprano sax (a very rare curved one as opposed to the straight soprano sax you usually see.)
Enough about me though. Way cool that you'll be out marching down the field playing The Victors!!
Congrats! There are many MMB alumnae on this site, and occasionally stories pop up in various threads.
I'm enjoying your work on this series, I admit it surprises me to think of you as college-aged rather than an established alum.
Unless you're the next Howard Gourwitz, the tenor sax player who returned for his 4th year of band in 1998, at the age of 50! I tried to find a good article to link to because I know a lot was written at the time, but that was just prior to "everything's on the Internet". Here's a summary version of his story: http://legalnews.com/detroit/1493676
Congratulations JWG!
Can't wait to see the Marching Band take the field. When I retire next year, I am coming up to a game and am going to see the Band pre-game at Revelli Hall.
Congrats JWG!!! I can't imagine what it feels like to march onto the playing field at the Big House. I get goose bumps just from watching from the stands ?.
Love these there are posts. You do a spectacular job with them.
Thanks again and GO BLUE ???
nice. congrats!
I played trumpet in the MMB in '99! There's nothing like the experience of marching onto the field and hearing the crowd roar for the first time! Kudos to you!
I remember the Cake formation back when I had season tickets in '85-'88.
Today's ticket stub is in honor of another great #49...Bob Chappius:
That same Bob Chappius who happened to be Rick Volk's uncle and hero; according to Volk himself, Chappius was his biggest influence in the decision to attend Michigan.
I remember #49 Rick Volk from the earliest days of my Michigan fandom, a time in my life when I was going against the grain and abandoning the team nearly all my family rooted for, Notre Dame.
I found this particular passage from his wikipedia page to be especially cool:
"Rick Volk is a safety man who conjures up an image of homemade apple pie and pancakes smothered in maple syrup, Saturday night movies and picnics in a wooded grove. He is clear-eyed and smooth-cheeked, with a short tilted nose and a smile that shows white. He couldn't be more pure mid-Americana if he were framed by a billboard."[12]
Also from his wiki: Volk was invited to play on the College All-Star team following his senior year. At the camp for the All-Star team, he was rated by the scouts as "the best all-around athlete among the high-priced talent preparing for pro debuts."[12] In 1989, Volk was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor.[13] He joined his uncle, Bob Chappuis, who was inducted into the Hall of Honor five years earlier in 1984.[13] Volk and Ron Johnson, both inducted in 1989, were the first two football players from the 1960s to be inducted into the Hall of Honor.[13]
Less than 50 days?!
Be still my beating heart.
Shit's getting real now!
JWG - Enjoy reading these EVERY day! Appreciate the effort you out into them. And nice job handling that post by SD Mick. You did it with class I wouldn’t have shown.
Good luck in MMB!
Get ready to Take The Field!
When does fall practice start?
Usually by the 2nd week of August.
Holy shit we are into the 40s!
I also enjoy the countdown posts, BTW you are doing the best job with countdowns since they started over 12 years ago. I look forward to the new season and know it will be a lot better than last season. My key this season is looking for progress. I want to see Gattis offense working well, the development of a good QB, the running game improving, and the defense improving. If we do see improvement, we should see 7 or 8 wins this season.
