TBT: "The Story, 2008"

Submitted by FrankMurphy on

I know that TBT isn't an actual thing around here, but I thought it might be a good time to peruse the MGoArchives and have ourselves a chuckle at the trials and tribulations of the past seven years. The time machine theme of the annual Story post from 2008 seems apropos for the present day, except that the dude with the time machine would be from today and would travel back seven years to August 30, 2008 (the day before the 2008 Utah game, Rich Rod's first as coach).

I guess the lesson is that re-inventing yourself and returning to your roots need not be mutually exclusive. In 2008 Michigan tried to do the former, and in 2011 it tried to do the latter. In 2015, it's doing both. Let's hope the third time's the charm.

Funny, I read all the "The Story" posts over the last few days. What a ride, and for once I am actually excited to imagine what next August's post will say...

In regards to the first comment on that story, at least Michigan managed to land both Devin Gardner and Conelius Jones.

It is striking though, at a time when both were tangentially-related at best to the story, Urban Meyer was regarded as a genius while Brady Hoke was regarded as a doofus. We definitely ended up on the darkest timeline.

Oh, man.  Reading the comments is like hearing people rave about how excited they are to go on the Titanic's maiden voyage.

on the bright side, I am far more up beat on the future today than I was in 1994.
The abandonment of the DeBord/Carr "Lightswitch Offense" is very, very welcome, no matter what the short-term price.
It's going to be fun to see an 8-4 season as a success for once.
Ive never looked more forward to a football season than this one. I cant wait to see it unfold and I know its going to be better than the assorted Doom and Gloom predictions that are out there
I do not want to see MI jump past 20 though should they win. If they are 3-0 after Notre Dame then fine. But let them excel slow. I hate it when they one win and then go to 15 from being unranked.
I think we are changed from the experience of the past seven years - a little more wary of blind optimism and suspicious of false promises. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to research CFB playoff tickets on Stubhub.

As someone said in a previous post:  like looking at your wedding day pictures after your divorce goes final.  If only you knew . . .
