Talking Favorite Desserts and Meteor Showers Thursday

Mates,

Two things that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, but as we wind down OT season, let's talk.

First, desserts.  It is time for berry harvest up north and despite the dry June/July the raspberries are booming.  4 of the kids went and picked a bunch at the north edge of the farm and oldest daughter made some kind of raspberry crumble, hot out of the oven, and buried in vanilla ice cream that might have been the all-time best dessert.  Tremendous flavor.  Would do again, 10/10.

But desserts tastes can vary greatly.  Ice cream, cakes, cookies, cheesecake, etc.   People have their favorites and still others aren't big on the sweets.

And more as a PSA, but the Persieds meteor show is at peak the next couple of nights.  It's supposed to be clear over much of Michigan during that time, so you might find it worth seeing.  This year we do have the full moon (a 'super moon') rising around 9:20, so the weaker shooting stars won't be visible.  Link to some data on the shower here: https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/meteor-shower/perseid.html

Two questions:

1.  What is your favorite dessert?

2.   Will you get out to look skyward for the meteor shower?

Summer is fast escaping, but football even is equally fast coming.  Enjoy.

Regular cake is a waste of calories. Nobody ever wants it at a party, you're guilted into having a slice. Ice cream is the superior dessert IMO, especially on top of a brownie.

This is 100% correct. Cake is just a vehicle for delivering frosting, which sounds great until you eat it and feel terrible about consuming pure sugar. The sugar should bring out flavor, not be the favor. Pies, cheesecake, ice cream, cookies, chocolate-based-non-cake-things... these are all much better choices than cake.

Creme Brulee with a glass of tawny port. A few of those fresh berries on top add a nice sour balance to the dessert.

Would love to see the meteor showers but its aways hazy or cloudy here in Tampa Bay... Only 10 weeks of summer left here.

Cake is vastly overrated - it's nothing more than a dry vessel for holding the frosting.  I much prefer pies - pumpkin, pecan, apple, Boston cream, coconut cream, and many others.  Ice cream can accompany anything, or stand on its own with or without toppings.  Anything with caramel poured on is always a good start.

But my favorite?  Don't know, never really thought about it that way.  My sweet tooth has increased more in the last 5 years than it ever has (note to self - get that diabetus test).  Nonetheless, I'll still go with a good pumpkin pie with a dollop of whipped cream.  Or maybe apple pie and ice cream?  Oh, I dunno...  Just gimme my just desert!

Yes, I'll try to see some of the meteors with the kid.  Just need to find a way to keep him up late enough without driving my and the wife batshit crazy...

1. I like desserts that follow the seasons.

Summer: I always look forward to strawberry shortcake or strawberry/rhubarb pie. Peaches and cream with fresh, juicy peaches are also a delight on a hot summer evening. Mixed berry cobbler, baby!

Fall: Apples! Apple crisp is probably one of my favorite desserts ever. Pumpkin pie. A mixed fall fruit salad with apples, pears, pomegranate, lemon juice and honey is also excellent.

Winter is the lean time.

2. Meteor showers are evil omens that the end of days is coming. I hope y'all are prepared.

We went blueberry picking last weekend and Ill go get some wild blackberries this weekend at the wife's family farm. My wife and daughter already made blueberry muffins, but the remaining 12lbs of those berries will be made into a blueberry port, and a traditional blueberry wine. The blackberries will all go into a blackberry wine. I love this time of year, and I am really getting into winemaking. I have to bottle some pear wine from last years harvest.

As for best dessert, thats a tough one. My grandma used to make a white chocolate frosting cake that I hold close to my heart. It may have just been a box cake with homemade frosting, but it''s something my mom and wife have not been able to replicate.

I dont know if it classifies as a dessert but I love to mix blueberries, cashews, honey, and dark dark chocolate in a bowl.

I live in Northern MI about 5 miles from the "city" lights. We get a beautiful sky at night and my 3 year old wants to stay up and watch the meteors. She was blown away with the moon last night...

Tie between pecan pie, cheesecake, and key lime pie. It would be like choosing between children to pick a favorite.

A properly made banana pudding is up there.

Regarding the meteor shower, that depends on the weather here and I am not a fan of stargazing when the moon is full.

Oh, and raspberries are one of the few foods I can't stand. Raspberries and papaya. Just awful. (Something about a chemical in papaya makes it smell exactly like feces for certain people.)

Love your first three picks. I'm a sucker for chocolate chip cookies 😋.

However, the Mgowife and I have cut out almost all sugar in our diet.

Diabetes runs in her family so we avoid it as much as possible.

That being said, a generous pour of Barrell Bourbon batch 30 is in my glencairn 🥃.

Go Blue and enjoy your sweet treats my fellow Mgobloggers 👍

Tres leches cake. I agree that with those above that regular cake is too dry. Tres leches is not that. Also: tiramisu, and cheesecake.

I hate to be the one to say this, but you didn't label this OT. I excitedly clicked thinking this was about two amazingly named recruits with interest in Michigan. I'm very disappointed. /s

I know some people here have a huge aversion to cake, but if I had to pick my favorite dessert, they are the cakes from the deli I worked at when I was growing up in Tampa. Everything is homemade right in the store, including the frosting. All triple layer cakes, and there's no shortage of options. Chocolate cake, alpine cake, peanut butter chocolate cake, red velvet, coconut, carrot, hummingbird, and they'll do seasonal cakes as well (peppermint chocolate cakes during the holidays).

I don't think we went a single year of my young life where we didn't celebrate someone's birthday with a cake from this place. Absolute best I've ever had. Again, I understand some folk's aversion to it, and there are plenty of bad / underwhelming cakes out there. You throw just some random storebought cake on the table from your local supermarket and yeah I'm really not going to want to partake. And I suppose I do have some personal bias because I worked here and its nostalgic for me, but you have one bite of this stuff and you'd understand.

Cake can be done right.

Beyond this, I love me some banana cream pie, cannoli, or a good piece of cheesecake, NY or Italian style are both great. Also, cream cheese brownies and seven layer / seven wonder bars.

There's a meteor shower tonight?

There is a Korean dessert bingsu (shaved ice with red bean paste, fruit, cream etc) on top... recently a few chains have "invented" a super soft shaved ice where the ice is like the consistency of flour(? in a good way, for some reason blanking on a good analogy). I know the picture doesn't look great, but give it a chance.

I'm guessing Michigan doesn't have one but places like LA have chains like Sul and beans.

Dessert....A French bistro near us makes the most awesome bananas foster crepe served with vanilla ice cream.  I go there just to get the dessert.

When we are at our house in Canada, we look skyward every night.  It's dark enough at night there you can easily see the Milky Way.  We got lucky and saw the Northern Lights for the first time ever a few weeks ago while there.  It was totally unexpected.  We were enjoying a glass of wine with friends and fortunately one of us was fast enough with their camera.  Now that we are home in the Chicago area, it's futile.  Way too much light pollution around here.

Here's the Northern Lights....

Picking a favorite desert is like having a favorite runway model...impossible. As I get older I have to indulge less (in dessert) so I guess I do get pickier.

Seen enough meteor showers in my lifetime, I've had my fill. Can't get enough of the northern lights though.

I prefer baklava with pistachios (Turkish version).

Yep, live semi-rural now and will see the Perseid meteor shower sitting on the back deck.  I love this time of year.

1.  For pies, I go with apple and for cakes, it's got to be carrot cake.  Vanilla ice cream on both.

2.  The amount of night time city lights makes it hard to see the stars where I am.  If I knew the Persieds meteors would have a lot of activity, I might drive an hour north to watch.  IIRC, they've been "meh" the last few years.

Cool that your kids picked the berries and made the dessert!  Many years ago, my kids and I picked boysenberry and made some syrup for pancakes.  Took a couple of days to get the stains off of our fingers!

I'll be UP at Lake Superior near Grand Marais MI much of the coming weekend, the weather forecast is looking promising for a good sky show.

"What's your favorite dessert?" is like "Which is your favorite child?"

My answer is the same to both questions: "I don't care, as long as somebody else made it, and they're cleaning it up afterwards, not me."

Needless to say, I've got no kids but I have lots of dessert. Tough to top the cannoli at Cantoro Market and the peach pie at Horrocks.

Live in dense woods, so no meteor showers for me.
