Streaming/Cable for 2023

Submitted by JeepinBen on August 22nd, 2023 at 11:05 AM

How are you watching the games this year? I know we'll need peacock for the opener, but what is your cable service/streaming service of choice? I paused our Hulu Live over the summer - not much need, and am curious if there's consensus around Hulu Live vs. YouTube TV vs. others.

What's your provider? do you recommend them?

The best I’ve found includes Fubo + Apple TV + a supersized projector. This allows you to play up to four games at once, and easily switch between the feature screen if you want  to watch 3 games at a time

Hulu Live and Peacock, I use Hulu Live for the season then cancel it when done. I will use an antenna when the games are on broadcast tv, no delays this way. Getting a text before you see a play gets frustrating.

I, too am a seasonal Hulu live subscriber and I really like it in terms of navigation. I access via the Hulu channel on Apple Tv which works really well. Just subscribed  to Peacock for $5.99 and will cancel after the first game. I have used YTTV in the past but find that Hulu’s non-sports programming and Hulu original content gives it the edge.

So, presumably, if I pay for some, otherwise unwanted, service to stream me a football game - that game will be free of commercials. Correct?

I leave it to each of you to determine whether this post is sarcastic or naive.

Man I'd be willing to pay a premium to watch games with ads that don't interrupt the gameplay - like I pay $70ish/month for YTTV right now. I know they want those games available to lots and lots of people, so this exercise is hypothetical - but that comes to about $17/game. I'd not even blink about paying $30/game, so $120/month, for a service that let me watch M games that finished a broadcast in 2.5 hours by eliminating TV timeouts - and still allowed me to watch all the other things YTTV gave me. And yes you can advertise during the game on the field that's fine.

I've explored going away from YTTV but it's still the best option for all I want/need.

The one thing that is IDEAL is the unlimited DVR. Others do not have such a great policy.

Not having Bally's is not an issue for me, as I'm out of state, so I simply password share MLB and NBA passes with others to get Tigers and Pistons (Red Wings are free on ESPN+ btw with your YTTV subscription).

I also share my YTTV with family, which is legit per their terms. So we split the cost 3 ways and plus since I'm out of state, we also did Sunday Ticket and split it 3 ways.

I apologize for the slight hi-jacking with a related question, but does anyone know if Peacock allows you to view sporting events on demand, or are their sports only available for live viewing?

I'm considering getting the app for football season, but it's rare that I'm able to watch games live.  If I can't watch on demand, purchasing Peacock doesn't do me much good.

I appreciate any and all info.

I was wondering the same thing. I signed up for Peacock yesterday (free ad-version for Spectrum customers for one year), and clicked around to see what I could learn. There are currently some Notre Dame football options to watch on there, such as the spring game, so that gives me hope the B1G games will be available for some time after airing live.

I had hulu tv and similar to you I pause it every summer after March madness. I switched to YouTube tv last football season to try it out and because hulu kept raising the price. I’ll probably stick with YouTube tv again since I get “free” standard Hulu through Verizon. They are both similar and average at best

YTTV is a great deal considering cost and convenience.

The picture quality doesn't show every blade of grass, but it's good. Once in a while there's a temporary loading issue, but not often and not for long.

Even better - it's had every UM game for years, and the price isn't crazy, and I only pay for it during football season b/c it's easy enough to stop and start for the 4 months I want, meaning that price is GREAT compared to year-round-services I don't want for 8 months.

Also the delayed viewing is very easy and utterly essential for me given family responsibilities.

This is me exactly.  I get YTTV for college football and NFL and then cancel in February.  I watch nearly every UM game on delay based on family stuff and the YTTV interface for recording, starting from the beginning, and fast forwarding (shows image preview at 15-second intervals) is the best I've tried.  For instance, I tried one (can't remember which one) which didn't show an image when fast forwarding so I had no idea whether it was still on commercial or cutting to game action.

I had been using YouTube.tv, but once west coast teams are added and B1G Channel is part of the basic cable, I am going back to XFinity cable. At this point the price is equivalent, and I prefer the control/quality I have with cable.

LOve my YTTV, but when combined with a soundbar (we have Sonos) I've had to deal with audio sync issues -- especially on live TV.  Super annoying, and I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.  Not sure where to start.

YouTube TV, started before the W World Cup, and will cancel after Michigan football’s last game, then get it for a month for March Madness then cancel!!

it’s the only thing left that’s good about streaming, prices are high you need a few different streaming services, but unlike cable you don’t have to sign a contract for a year or two.

There is a zero percent chance I’ll be a pawn in these streaming wars.

I’ll be finding free steams. The best way to do this is use Firefox and add the ublock origin extension. That’ll clear all the impossible ads on sites like crack steams. Works for ppv boxing, and it’ll certainly work for CFB.

I love DirecTV Stream because it has all the channels that Mrs. Bursley loves, plus all the sports ones that I need - including Bally's. Also, my whole family can use the same subscription - a daughter living out of state and another one in college.

What's a cable provider??

It's been my experience that the "underground" streaming sites work well enough. Comcast and google don't need any of my money.

I switched from YTTV to Hulu because Hulu is now cheaper, comes with the History channel, and gets Disney and ESPN+ included for free. I couldn’t be happier after switching.
