I know that it is impossible to predict weather on specific days very far into the future, but weather trends can be pretty accurately predicted. Pretty much every extended weather projection I have seen this year calls for a pretty early Spring, with high 50s beginning in mid-March and fluctuating around there through early April and then warming again. It does not project to be a never-ending Winter like last year. They could get a bad day of weather for the Spring game but it does not look like it will be the kind of weather we had last year which makes the game just an all-around bad idea.
January 24th, 2019 at 11:53 AM ^
This reads exactly like most forecasts do.
January 24th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
Incorrect. If you are saying most forecasts this year, than yes. Not if you are saying it about every year. Last year at this time the Weather Channel and Accuweather were projecting 20s and 30s throughout April. Anybody who cared to look knew it was going to be a cold non-Spring and that is exactly what it was. This year the future forecast is much different and much warmer.

What do the forecasts say about the lack of snow? Just a few years go we got like 8 feet. We haven't even gotten 8 inches this winter (that's what she said).
My kid wants to go sledding. And I promised the family I'd take them on a sleigh ride.
Fuck this winter.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:29 PM ^
I hear you. I have a 3 year old who has been asking about sledding all winter. There was a two hour window this past Saturday from like 9 to 11 where there was enough snow on the ground to sled and temperatures that were not guaranteed frost bite. We made it sledding for those two hours. Can check that off the list at least.
We are getting 6-8 inches of snow next Monday into Tuesday. However, temps are going to be crazy cold. Like a high of 5, actual, cold.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
Good for you getting out there. I dropped the ball on Sat.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:41 PM ^
Winter is coming
January 24th, 2019 at 1:03 PM ^
Ugh, AccuWeather. They are the worst.
The 45 and 90 day daily forecasts that AccuWeather produces are complete garbage and provide absolutely zero value.
Sure, they can predict a trend of "April will be colder than normal" 1-2 months ahead (then again, everyone was predicting that, so AccuWeather wasn't providing any value beyond what the National Weather Service provides), but to predict the weather as regards any individual day - that's impossible more than 10 days out.
Even last April when it was a significantly colder than normal month, Detroit had a handful of individual days where it was well above normal and the temperature soared into the mid-70s.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:16 PM ^
I certainly don't remember any 70s last April. Not at all. There was a weird warm up in mid-February but temperature did not "soar" into the mid 70s last April.
I have based my "when should I bring my golf clubs upstairs" decision on AccuWeather's extended forecast the last five years and it has yet to steer me incorrectly. And why are they "the worst" for reporting substantially what the National Weather Service is projecting? Could it be that both have reached the same conclusions?
I get that weather cannot be predicted to the exact second or even a day weeks or months ahead of time, but there are like actual professionals who work for these companies who do this for a living and presumably do it pretty well. I have yet to look at a 45 or 90 day extended forecast and have it miss the mark by that much.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
FWIW, the high temperature at DTW was 76 degrees last 12-April. Then a couple other days in the 70s in the back half of the month.
I'll admit - I despise AccuWeather. Here's why: their 1-7 day forecasts are basically nothing but re-packaging forecasts that are derived from weather models that are developed and funded by the National Weather Service. E.g., they provide no short-term value over what you are getting from your tax dollars. However, AccuWeather has been out there for decades lobbying in Washington DC to cut funding for the NWS.
Then their day-by-day 45 to 90 day forecasts, which they debuted a couple years ago. It's literally impossible to forecast daily weather that far out. There is absolutely zero science involved in their forecasts. All they do is take climatological norms, +/- a couple degrees based off "April will be cooler/warmer than normal" (that seasonal forecast being something that is 100% from the NWS in the first place), then hit some sort of "randomize" function to introduce some daily noise. That's their "product."
AccuWeather claims they are innovative and at the forefront of their field, but they are anything but. They're just a bunch of semi-slick packaging.
Anyway, that's the end of my rant about AccuWeather. If you derive value from their 45 to 90 day forecasts, fair enough.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
I mean, I am typically looking at it because I play a lot of golf and I want to know "cold as shit" or "seasonably warm." It has presented me with a fairly accurate picture for some years now. I concede I don't have a particular interest in Accu Weather, weather "funding," lobbyist, or anything like that. I just want to know, generally, when I am going to be able to tee it up.
January 24th, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
Yes, I have noticed that too. They are getting extremely accurate at predicting temperatures for months ahead. My buddy timed his move up north (he has a house in Florida) last year all the way out to June because he could see the long cold spring temps a few months ahead. Actual weather and precipitation is a whole lot more complex though apparently.
January 24th, 2019 at 11:58 AM ^
what are you talking about? Groundhog day isn't until February 2nd. Don't pay attention to these 'fake news' weather predictors that pretend like they know whether or not the groundhog will see its shadow. I'm sorry for piling on, but it is ridiculous!
January 24th, 2019 at 12:27 PM ^
Only a marmot can give you accurate weather predictions. Never trust the humans.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
Marmots? No thanks, I'm simply waiting for @MGoWeather.

ljohnb - Have you ever read your own posts? They have a tone that suggests someone pisses in your Cheerios every morning...
January 24th, 2019 at 1:22 PM ^
I just read like 20 of them and don't understand your post at all. Are you referring to my commentary in this thread where I say essentially "the weather is supposed to be a lot better for the Spring Game this year."
Sorry to be such a debby-downer, Mike Damone.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Hey, man, we should be rewarding him for a somewhat optimistic post for once, right? I expected the usual concern trolling about spring game scheduling, and I was pleasantly surprised!
January 24th, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
Will they be honoring the newly minted national champs at the game?
January 24th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
With Big Macs and Chicken McNuggets?

I seldom down-vote but here I would give you a truck load.

Ok. Cool. Hook 'Em??

2nd place
January 24th, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
MMB calendar says that but it says it’s tentative.
Also, Ford Field is a terrible soulless venue. Feels like a warehouse on the concourse.
Michigan Football at Michigan Stadium.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:25 PM ^
Its the spring game.. I didn't realize it needed to be in an amazing venue. Michigan football would be more enjoyable to watch in the offseason in an area that will not be affected by weather. Just my opinion.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Many families can’t all take their kids with them to games because of the absolutely ludicrous ticket prices that would add up depending how many kids. So the spring game is a great free way to get your kids in to experience it
January 24th, 2019 at 2:51 PM ^
BINGO -- I'm planning on taking my sons for the first time for this exact reason. They will see Michigan football for the first time and love it without the stress/prices of a normal game.
January 24th, 2019 at 3:16 PM ^
I'm sure the school can foot the bill to reserve the place. Also, a guaranteed temperature controlled environment may make it easier on parents so they don't have to shorten their visit in case of cold or rainy weather.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:42 PM ^
I’m not sure about a “terrible soulless venue”.
The Lions are a terrible, soulless franchise, however.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:55 PM ^
I think that players would find it cool to play on an NFL field and also it would make for a game that could be played regardless of weather, so I'd be for it
January 24th, 2019 at 2:39 PM ^
Lot of the local kids on the team have played at Ford Field for various state championship games. I think it is a pretty sweet place to play, in general.
I do agree with the original premise that the game should be at the Big House, though
January 24th, 2019 at 11:55 AM ^
This is why I suggested Ford Field as an alternate site if the weather goes bad and it is good PR
January 24th, 2019 at 11:58 AM ^
I'm all for the Spring game at Michigan Stadium, but if the weather is bad, just move it to Ford Field
January 24th, 2019 at 12:02 PM ^
Honestly asking because it has been like 3 coaching staffs since I have been to one. Is it an event "worth" moving if there is bad weather? From what I understand the entire idea of the Spring Game has been dialed back quite a bit hasn't it? Do they even play a game or is it just basically an open practice?
January 24th, 2019 at 12:22 PM ^
We went a few years ago, 2016 maybe, and it was great. But the weather was beautiful, sunny and in the low 70's IIRC. I don't think I would go if the weather was crap.
They played an actual "game" that year.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:04 PM ^
You are assuming ford field is not being used for anything else that day. Or that Ford Field not schedule anything for a day and time that may not even be needed.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:04 PM ^
The March-April timeframe is typically a light period at Ford Field (take it from someone who has spent a couple stints of his career working in downtown), but then there are times during Lions games when the place isn't being used for anything in particular even though, by all appearances, it is in fact in use.
January 24th, 2019 at 2:01 PM ^
It's pretty sad when the best football being played there all year is during the HS Finals.
January 24th, 2019 at 12:16 PM ^
I have big plans...have never been to this event. I'm hoping to make a vacation out of this and pull my avid little Michigan fan grandson out of school for a little trip...away from the gawdawful state of Kansas. This would be a larger family event with a couple brothers who usually attend.
Keep it in the Big House-just for us!!! :)
January 24th, 2019 at 12:21 PM ^
Haven't seen anything announcing it - where did you hear it, OP? MSU announced theirs would be 4/13 at 2 PM but last year we didnt officially announce spring game time until March
January 24th, 2019 at 12:42 PM ^
My interest in the Spring Game seems to go down every year. So little of what happens in that game ever seems to tell us anything of real value about the upcoming season.
January 24th, 2019 at 1:02 PM ^
This is how I feel. Sadly, I’m also starting to think I will feel that way about the season until The Game, but I think that every year and I’m hyped by July 4th.
Im just tired of feeling like I’m watching a great movie, only to have an awful inevitable ending and it’s on repeat. We have to win The Game this year, I can’t take another loss.
January 24th, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
It used to be around July 18 for me (NCAA Football release date).
