Sparty exposes it's inferiority complex....

Submitted by PeterKlima on
An excerpt from a Denver Post article: "We can put our chests out and be proud," said George Perles, Michigan State's football coach from 1983-94 and now a university trustee. "Take a school like Michigan State, a Big Ten school more known for football than basketball, to win a national championship in their backyard? You'll see green and white around here for years to come." More known for football? Is he just lying about their football history so that sport can get a little glory from this Final Four? And what about Izzo's recent comment that he wants to show the nation who "THE university in Michigan" is? Doesn't that remind you of Joe Pesci's troubled character in Goodfellas? I understand they are both drunk with excitement, but the psychology behinds those comments is evident. No one other than the most dellusional State fan would even entertain those thoughts. I thought coaches were supposed to be more dignified. How can I be expected to root for these guys when they remind me of a fat kid trying to lick the inside of a potato chip bag to suck out every laste taste of something good? It's just sad....

I don't see where this is going. Plus, for a thread stating that Michigan State has an inferiority complex, there sure as shit are a ton of Sparty threads on this board, nearly all knocking on them. Seems ironic.

I don't think ripping on Sparty is necessarily showing an inferiority complex. Sometimes a spade can be (and should be) called a spade. For instance if there is a little brat pulling on your jacket and kicking your shins to try to get your attention, you calling him a "little brat" is just calling him what he is. Calling Michigan State "little brother" (for the obvious reasons) and getting annoyed when they are pulling the UM jacket and kicking UM shins, I don't think it's an inferiority thing when they are called "little brother" or "annoying". Sometimes, I agree, UM fans may be looking for words in Sparty's sentences to take offense to, but I also think a lot of times those words are there.

George Perles thinks MSU is known for football because he was the football coach. At a time when MSU was shit in basketball. MSU has a galactic inferiority complex that would make an army of therapists independently wealthy trying to cure it, but that's not part of it.

I agree with the article, there is no way i am rooting for MSU , but if they do win it would be good for the state. I placed a bet with a friend and I'm giving him MSU and 10. Personally I think Ty Lawson is a GOD he just can't be stopped. Another thing the sports that matter? I don't know but growing up there were 5 legit sports not 2. Football and basketball are huge, but so are hockey, baseball, and soccer. (the world's most popular sport) I'm not saying this to even up the score. This is Michigan not Alabama, in this state hockey rules. Edit: I read in one of these posts that the only team Michigan fans hate more than MSU is OSU. IMO I disagree I hate Lard ass and Notre Dame much more than MSU!

I recall being unruly on pretty much every senior night. And it was indeed our fraternity. email 1: "this article is about me and some ___s on a bar crawl when we 'stuck to party lines' and cheered for UConn just to piss off some MSU fans..." email 2: "i swear we didn't know it was the regional MSU alumni bar when we started the bar crawl... "The only reason they were here was to root against Michigan State," Lawrence said. (that or get drunk...)" frat on!

Yeah, I've heard this "THE" Michigan State University line several times now. It works for Penn State and Ohio State who don't so much have to worry about UPenn or Ohio U, but it doesn't work so well for MSU. It's an odd statement to try to make.

that Perles comment had anything at all to do with Michigan. Izzo's comment can be construed as such, but it mostly appears that he's proud of his team. When people get happy, they say things like that.

I started a thread to promote a discussion. That is what happened. (It is not hard to start a topic). Just commenting about a school is not an "inferiorty complex" (Have you taken a psych 101 class?) I am not self-aggrandizing or bragging about how great Michigan is... I am just making a basic diagnosis based on comments made by State coaches....

""Take a school like Michigan State, a Big Ten school more known for football than basketball, to win a national championship in their backyard? You'll see green and white around here for years to come."" That is truly bizarre. Last MSU basketball championship: 2000 (and of course the 1979 Magic Johnson team), along with 5 of the last 11 Final Fours. Last MSU consensus football championship: 1965. They've won the Big 10 three times since the mid-60s, one of them a 4-way tie (which is their only conference title in the last 20 years). Pretty sure everyone would think of MSU as a basketball school. Their football program more recently is most known for the MAKE PLAYS! rant on the radio and JLS slapping himself.

MSU can't have an inferiority complex because it's not an inferiority complex if you are actually inferior. That being said, MSU and fans are definitely acting like they have a major inferiority complex. At mlive, almost every MSU/Final Four article I have read has a few slams at UM in it. If MSU fans can't even enjoy a great season without comparing themselves to UM or slamming UM, how can they ever be considered anything but inferior? I am all for the rivalry and talking trash, but they should be thinking about and enjoying a chance to win it all tonight. Why on earth would they think about UM instead of their own school? A truly elite program is self-validating. At this point, MSU is not. It is definitely inferior.

The fact that there are probably half a dozen threads around here having to do with MSU kinda proves that we have more than a few in our fanbase who have a complex when it comes to Sparty as well.

One, I bet if you go over to the RCMB at any particular time you will find several Michigan threads. Two, our supposed inferiority complex manifests itself in: - A couple message board threads Theirs manifests itself in: - Bumper stickers - Billboards on the highway - Every Appalachian State sweatshirt in the state - Their very mascot The billboard alone is worth approximately fifty million message board threads worth of inferiority complex. The simple fact is that MSU fans are almost completely unique in the country in that they care more about their rivals failing than they do about their own team's success. If you've never witnessed a Sparty fan saying, "Well, we lost today but that's OK, Michigan lost too" then you know what I mean. That puts them in select company with Red Sox fans as the only fans who devote greater energy hating someone else than rooting for their own.

enough knocking the Spartans.... we better be careful with that.... they are now a national power in basketball, and their football team stuck it to us.
