South Dakota St. fake QB sneak - would it work in FBS?

South Dakota St. had a pretty sweet trick play in their game against North Dakota St. - I thought it would be cool to share and also get thoughts on whether you think it would work on the FBS level (or for Michigan especially)?

Tried this exact play coaching flag football this Fall. Our Center snapped the ball too high and it bounced off the QB’s crotch, turning into a fumble and 5 yard loss.

Fun design, but the ideal snap trajectory is flatter than a typical shotgun snap and has to be just right for this to work. Probably too advanced for the level I was coaching. Even the SD RB in the video was fortunate to grab the snap a few inches above the ground.

I love this kinda stuff. Great play. Why wouldn’t it work? Better than an RB running toward the sideline and throwing. And if nobody is open just run up the line and get tackled for a small loss. Oh well.

That play only works if you plan on overtaking ass on the next play. Also my Uncle Rico's third cousin from Idaho was playing counter strike with Barrett last night and he confirmed my exact sentiments

I'm pretty sure this is a penalty, at least in the NFL. Unless the rule was changed. Years ago a Bears QB had a snap go through his legs bc he didn't know it was coming, the defense recovered. To my surprise, it was ruled a penalty bc the QB wasn't the first to touch it, and the Bears got the ball back. A lazy google search says ...

If:

  • the ball is snapped between the QB’s legs
  • the QB was under center
  • the ball doesn’t touch the QB on the way through his legs
  • someone other than the QB is the first to touch the ball

then it is ruled a false start.

Most significantly, even if the defense recovers the ball, it is not a turnover, just a false start.

You know, I saw this play over the weekend. And I thought this was Brady Hoke’s SDSU team. And I wondered how his offense could come up with that. But now I see it was the wrong SDSU team

LOL. I scored on this very same play back in 1970 as a wide receiver, at Tappan Junior High in Ann Arbor as our  middle-weight team beat Slauson JH 36-6. Nothing is new.
