South Dakota St. fake QB sneak - would it work in FBS?
South Dakota St. had a pretty sweet trick play in their game against North Dakota St. - I thought it would be cool to share and also get thoughts on whether you think it would work on the FBS level (or for Michigan especially)?
South Dakota State with the trick play!

No reason why it couldn't, unless of course RB drops the ball or throws a bad pass or receiver drops the pass or it gets batted down at the line or it gets picked off.

You would definitely want to have someone at that RB position that could throw for sure. Seems like something Urban would have drawn up for Tebow when he was still playing H-back. I'm willing to see Haskins or Corum try it though.

We do have a running-back shaped entity who is a former QB, has thrown successfully on trick plays in the past and is in desperate need of increased deployment. You know his name. Say it with me…Michael Barrett!

I thought Michael Barrett got moved to the OC role!
All kidding aside, it was good seeing him scoop and "score" on that play that was reviewed and overturned. No whistle - keep playing.

You said "could throw" and "Tebow" in the same sentence...I'm confused?

If history is any precedent, then it would work for anyone except Michigan. Harbaugh would be flagged for "intent to deceive".

We absolutely need a receiver that has the ability to take a bow or at least curtsy. Genuflecting is for the Ivy League and if you're going to genuflect in the B1G, you're going to be laughed at and the play wouldn't work.

Not as effective as the Jeremy Gallon cloaking device.

It was always a nifty ability...

Frankly I don't understand why teams.dont go trick 30% of time. Our Mad Magicians did. Nobody since.

Tried this exact play coaching flag football this Fall. Our Center snapped the ball too high and it bounced off the QB’s crotch, turning into a fumble and 5 yard loss.
Fun design, but the ideal snap trajectory is flatter than a typical shotgun snap and has to be just right for this to work. Probably too advanced for the level I was coaching. Even the SD RB in the video was fortunate to grab the snap a few inches above the ground.

I love this kinda stuff. Great play. Why wouldn’t it work? Better than an RB running toward the sideline and throwing. And if nobody is open just run up the line and get tackled for a small loss. Oh well.

That play only works if you plan on overtaking ass on the next play. Also my Uncle Rico's third cousin from Idaho was playing counter strike with Barrett last night and he confirmed my exact sentiments

what does FBS have to do with anything?

Me when I think about someone holding hope that Harbaugh would ever not run it up the gut on 4th and 1
November 10th, 2021 at 3:04 AM ^
Yes.
And not only would it work in FBS, it would also work in the NFL.

I'm pretty sure this is a penalty, at least in the NFL. Unless the rule was changed. Years ago a Bears QB had a snap go through his legs bc he didn't know it was coming, the defense recovered. To my surprise, it was ruled a penalty bc the QB wasn't the first to touch it, and the Bears got the ball back. A lazy google search says ...
If:
- the ball is snapped between the QB’s legs
- the QB was under center
- the ball doesn’t touch the QB on the way through his legs
- someone other than the QB is the first to touch the ball
then it is ruled a false start.
Most significantly, even if the defense recovers the ball, it is not a turnover, just a false start.

You know, I saw this play over the weekend. And I thought this was Brady Hoke’s SDSU team. And I wondered how his offense could come up with that. But now I see it was the wrong SDSU team

that kinda shit only works for Jackrabbits

If Harbaugh ran that play the rb would still run the ball straight up the middle .
November 10th, 2021 at 8:59 AM ^
We would get flagged for Intent To Deceive.

LOL. I scored on this very same play back in 1970 as a wide receiver, at Tappan Junior High in Ann Arbor as our middle-weight team beat Slauson JH 36-6. Nothing is new.

These are the kind of plays we are holding back for future opponents. You just wait and see.
