Some tidbits regarding practice/coach Harbaugh's staff

Submitted by Dawkins on

I (sort of) work with the parent of a current Michigan football player (not directly, but I have occasional contact with her in my field of work). I saw her this morning and we chit-chatted a little about football practice and the new coaching staff. There's nothing earth-shattering here so please lower your expectations, but here are some bits of info she shared with me:

  • The offensive players were given lots of Stanford film to watch over the summer. It sounded from her description like they were given video files with the name of the play superimposed over video of Stanford players actually running the play during a game. I asked if they were given any 49ers film to watch and she said she wasn't sure but didn't think so.
  • I asked her about the "country club atmosphere" comments that have been thrown around lately. She scoffed at that, saying the reality was quite the opposite. She said practices under Brady Hoke's staff were so unbelievably physical that the guys frequently entered game day so bruised and banged up that it limited their production and ability to play. Players complained to the staff about this early on during Hoke's tenure but stopped once it was clear that doing so would just cause their toughness to be questioned. After that the physical practices just became part of the program culture. She said coach Harbaugh's practices are also physical but she's encouraged because his staff has also emphasized the need for players to enter games with "fresh bodies." Caveat: Keep in mind that this is all through the lens of a mother with a child on the team, so it's possible she's describing normal football stuff that doesn't sit well with her momma-bear instinct (this has sometimes been the case with mothers in my own family).
  • She was unable to confirm the "Gentry to TE" stuff from yesterday, and I got the sense she wasn't entirely sure who he was. She knows many of the current and former players but doesn't exactly follow recruiting like we do.

I think it depends on his college major.

If he was a liberal arts major (history, sociology, anthropology, etc) he would go to the kamasutra for ideas:

If he was a science major, he could go to the periodic table:

Or if he was an education major, or fan of Sesame Street, stick with the alphabet:

"But you know what they say, those who are don't learn to snap their fingers until 20 years old shouldn't throw grease at fast food workers."

Yeah, I've never heard anyone say this. I don't even know what the hell this means. Between this, the troll, and threats to fuck the troll, this whole thread has really gone off the rails.

I didn't know not being able to snap your fingers meant you were lower on the totem pole of life.

Sigh.

I have a question: what does it make me if I didn't learn to swim until age 12? Or ride a 2-wheel bike until age 7?

I'm a slow learner. And I could care less what anyone thinks of it. That's why I posted it for all of my followers to see.

"What does it make me if I didn't learn to swim until age 12?"

A person who has refined taste in arm floaties?

"What does it make me if I didn't learn to ride a 2-wheel bike until age 7?"

One of the world's best tricyclists?

I think you've missed the point.  All of your examples of being a slow learner could be used by jerks in a pejorative manner, however, to reasonable people, none of those things are used to form an impression about the kind of person you are.  You seem to get that when it comes to yourself, but at the same time you don't appear to apply the same credo to others.  A whole lot of very good human beings work in fast food or can't afford private internet service, just like a bunch of very good human beings learned to swim later in their life or never at all.

BS. Your joke is supposed to be about how he's poor and dumb like those people. So next time make a joke about how he's on a lunch break from doing astrophysics at NASA and gets back rubs from his supermodel wife while he's trolling. Doesn't really work, does it?

I don't think you get to denegrate the education of OSU students, when you didn't (and don't) go to Michigan. If your education were superior somehow, then okay I guess (still churlish), but that isn't the case.

edit: wish I could neg you twice for that comment, among others.

I'm glad you know 100% where the troll whose comments are no longer visible went to school.

My comment was a shot at the guy. Not where he went to school. I could care less about that.

And no, I will never go to Michigan. And I don't lose a bit of sleep over it because I love being a fan.

Honest question WD, since you've posted about it multiple times- why don't you want to try to transfer to Michigan or go there for grad school? You obviously have a passion for all things UM, it just doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Going to Michigan was by far the most formative experience of my life.

I looked into it I'm just not good enough, not smart enough and I don't have the money. And I just can't see myself going there.

I'd rather the spot in the enrollment go to someone who will turn out to be somthing 10x worth what I am or will ever will be.

Despite what assholes say or think, it's okay to just be a fan. Which is what I've done since I was born as I had a Wolverine football in my hospital crib.

I'll do my best to my kids in there and give them resources so they can be 20x what I am.

Yeah, I'm brutally honest about the U-M thing.

Even if I can make the transfer GPA, there are people wayyyy higher than me that will get in before someone who's at the 3.0 line. I'm happy about my GPA and I don't need the added stress of a pipedream that never was my dream as a kid.

All I ever wanted was to live in Ann Arbor and have season tickets to sports. That's it. Just get there whichever way you can.

I'd be too afraid to even really try to transfer there because I'd probably leave with a cannonball sized debt.

WD, hope this does not sound like a sermon, if it does I will apoligize right now.  First and foremost, you (and everyone else) needs to be as happy as possible in their life.  If you are happy and content about your current non-Michigan school and love being one of the most passionate and all-together fans I have seen, then that is great!  Do not let others make your decision for you.

On the other hand, my only piece of advice is do not sell yourself short at all.  Do not worry about what the transfer stats, etc. are and do not allow them to psych you out.  Given what I thought was your major, your GPA could still get you in and it is not always about GPA.  You can decide if there is any harm in just applying, as who knows maybe you do get in.  If you don't then I am sure you are happy with where you are at, but if you do get in then the choice or option is now yours to decide, you have the power.  I can understand the finance issues, as Michigan is getting more costly all the time, but have you checked into any non-loan type scholarships and grants, or hell, how about being a team manager (do they get paid a stipend?).  What about U-M Dearborn (assuming you are already not there) as transfers and costs would be easier than AA.  Once again, sorry if this came across as preachy, but dude, don't sell yourself short!

As an instate student, is cost really a determining factor compared to any other 4-year school? I mean, is the $1000 per year in extra tuition really deterring you? Frankly, I only hear this argument from people who don't have good enough grades.

I have a flat 3.0 GPA which is the minimum transfer GPA for Michigan.

That's not good enough to get in, imo. Because people with ones a lot higher are gonna want to get in.

I'm pretty sure you've lived on this blog since 2009 (at least).  My point wasn't about it being summer - it was about realigning your priorities in life if you want to make something of yourself someday.
