True Blue Grit

Great post.  Thanks for sending the link.

With all the scummy people in the college sports world we have to read about all the time, it's really reassuring to read about the good people like Bump who made things so much better for those around them.  We all want to win so badly, but BE showed that you can do it the right way.  RIP Mr. Elliott.

Nice article and responses on the Iowa site. I do appreciate the tone.

Fine people bring out the best in us, even if they don't always win. Bump is someone we can be proud of, which is more than can be said about many players, coaches, and administrators in college football. We are fortunate.

They're right - the B1G should find a way to honor Bump.  Maybe a sportsmanship trophy, or something to the winner of Michigan-Iowa football?  I dunno, but I also don't think any other player/administrator in the history of college sports has had such an impact on two different schools as Bump had with Michigan and Iowa.

Unfortunately, the people bestowing whatever honor is dreamed up are the ones we despise in college sports today.  People like Jim Delaney, Mark Emmert, etc.  They'd smile, pose, take credit where it's not due, and enjoy even more cash free-falling into their pockets.  All the while unable to distinguish any difference between themselves and what/who Bump Elliot represents - so prevalent is the narcissism.

wonderful article.  and an insightful and at the same time, indicting quote:

Elliott was a man of unflinching integrity. College athletics reward the most venal, morally ambiguous executives now. Elliott's sense of loyalty to his coaches seems frankly quaint.

Arizona hired Olsen away in 1983, and the men's basketball team still hasn't made the Final Four since.

Wow.  I had to pause there.  That's shocking.

I'm pulling for their MBB team this season (just not against Michigan).

Nice obituary. Short and to the point. Kind of like the subject. This paragraph sums it up:

"The things that mattered to Bump don't seem to matter today. That's a shame. This is a site run by foul-mouthed civilians, but we deeply appreciate that Bump never swore and that he served his country proudly. Nowadays, college sports uses the military for flyovers and sponsored applause sessions during commercial breaks. Elliott was a man of unflinching integrity. College athletics reward the most venal, morally ambiguous executives now. Elliott's sense of loyalty to his coaches seems frankly quaint."

Foul mouthed civilians. Venal, morally ambiguous executives. Times have surely not changed for the better. RIP Bump.

Bump Elliott was a man of integrity and humility.  It seems to me that those values are still alive in Iowa athletics.  And, despite some notable missteps in the past, I hope the same can be said of Michigan athletics now and in the future.

A few years back the wife and I were at the M vs. Iowa game and some Hawkeye fans were sitting nearby, and the wife (without knowing the Bump Elliot backstory) was saying how much respect she had for the way the Iowa team conducted themselves on the field, and said that she thought they played with respect for their opponent.

I said to her you gotta give a lot of that credit to Bump Elliot, she said Bump who? I then told her about the former Michigan All-American and Head Coach that was replaced by Bo, and what a class act he was as an Associate AD here before he took the Iowa Job.

The Iowa fans turned to us and said "You have no idea of how thankful we are for you to send Bump Elliot our way."

Bump was class pure and simple from another time when fairplay and integrity mattered most.
