Slightly OT: What is the Best Sporting Event?

Submitted by Steve Breaston… on

Happy Friday to all! With a monumental sports weekend upon us (NFL Draft, Kentucky Derby, Mayweather/Pacquiao, NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs, etc.), the question should be raised: what is the best event in sports? A singular bowl game? THE Bowl game? How about the Olympics? The FIFA World Cup? It doesn't have to be held yearly to be considered and the Hunger Games, although intriguing, aren't yet a real thing.

My vote is March Madness.

DISCUSS.

For me yes, and that is one of the drawbacks of Hockey to me. Relatively few kids in the world play hockey growing up and it’s expensive so it’s disproportionately wealthy people. It makes watching the NHL less appealing to me.

Nobody watches golf for the best athletes in the world.  They walk around the course and swing a stick.  It's like saying I watch Jeopardy for the smartest people in the world when really it's just people who have a particular brain skill.  So I'm not sure how the "few thousand people" thing applies (and I'm sure there are more than a couple thousand people growing up playing golf.)

on the opposite end of the spectrum the NFL draft is by far the worst.  It's ok to watch on TV but if you ever go in person it is so painfully boring.  You REALLY feel the time in between each pick  Unless your team has the #1 pick just look online or wait for the push notification

The Rose Bowl and everything surrounding it was the singularly most amazing, well-organized, and spectacular sporting event I've ever experienced. Even with the loss. They do it right in Pasadena.

Is not the best sporting event. I think we can all agree on that fact. Even if you are a tennis fan, you should prefer wimbledon or something else. Seats at roland garros are extremely cramped.

Roland Garros is great, but there is just something about Wimbledon that makes me love it. Going there is something I really want to do.

By the way, Court Philippe Chatrier needs a roof. I know there are plans to make that a stadium instead of an outdoor court, but it's long overdue.

I think March Madness is the most popular, but my favorite is the NCAA football title game, except when Ohio State is in it, which is why I did not watch a single second of the game in January. I knew they were going to win, so I didn't want to see their having fun.

I know I should boycott FIFA but I never can. The World Cup is my favorite sporting event. I guess my favorite annual event is March Madness.

While Sepp Blatter and his crowd do everything they can to poison it, the World Cup is probably my favorite.  Not only are the games compelling (if not always the best soccer), but there's always the perverse pleasure of watching drop-dead gorgeous Brazilian women crying.

When I was a kid, I loved the Olympics.  But the professionalization of the Olympics has pretty much ruined the aura for me.

As a kid in 8th grade that plays 85 baseball games this year and is very competitive, the little league world series is trash. So short of fences, short mounds, short bases. It's a 5th grade field. I know your joking, but I just had to say something.

The NHL Playoffs are running away the best sporting event.  Most compelling to watch, the highest level of play, just generally the best in all facets.  March Madness comes a close second, but really only the opening round or two, after that it just becomes college basketball to a degree.  The NHL Playoffs remain hype and compelling throughout; on a related topic, there is no better single event in sports than a NHL Playoffs game 7, ESPECIALLY in the Cup Finals.  The energy, the excitement, the atmosphere, the amount of emotion and GAF from the players, there's nothing like it.

1. Michigan Football Saturdays and college football saturdays in general

2. World Cup.  I played through college and just love it. It really is a beautiful game (usually)

3. March Madness

4. Barn tag - exhilarating and extremely dangerous.  If my mom knew I'd ever raced at top speed across a thin beam 15-18 feet in the air then jumped across a long gap to the barn wall to start climing, she'd ground me today - and I'm 46.

5. NFL playoffs (not including the super bowl).

6. Michigan/Big10 Basketball.

7. Winter Olympics - this should probably be higher, but meh.

8. NHL (live only).  Hockey is unbelievable live.

9. The Masters - you may be bored by it, but holy cow do they put in a ton of work.

10. Campus climbing - I probably shouldn't explain this.

Sports? Heh. Nothing like a good book.

Pistons in the NBA Finals, Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals, Tigers in The World Series, Michigan in the NCAA Tourney have all been amazing experiences to watch. If the Lions ever make the Super Bowl, I think that would trump all three (edit: four). Michigan vs. OSU when both teams are really good! Whew! That's the business right there!

Olympic track and field? Yes. FIFA World Cup? Get it done! I love all those things mate. I have a hard time picking one so I'll go with..... I don't know.

But after that, my favorite is the Tour, I'd love to go follow it around one year. World Cup is fun too, it feels special because it's not played every year.

Gotta be the FIFA World Cup.  It's not really a six-week tournament every four years.  It's really a three-year-long tournament where the whole world gets to play (unless they fall before the arbitrary mercies of FIFA's disciplinary committees.)

Honorable mention goes to March Madness, the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Winter Olympics, the swimming at the Summer Olympics, and the IIHF championships, which have a delightful promotion-relegation system.

I'm biased but it's the Indy 500 for me hands down. The single largest crowd in an sporting event. To sit on the front stretch and see the sea of people is truly amazing. This combined with the pageantry prior to the race gets me choked up every single year. Small coincidence that it's opening day at the track today. 23 more days!

I was fairly excited to see that movie since it had the 500 at the heart of its premise. It ended up being a little too far fetched, though. I don't know what I was expecting since I knew going in that it featured a snail that could do 200. Just didn't move the meter that much.

Pairing my iPhone with all the Bluetooth audio devices at Costco and watching the employees run around trying to figure out who's playing the inappropriately loud music.
