Signing day.....

Submitted by jmdblue on

We've had pretty boring signing days over the past several years.   We pretty much knew 95% of our classes going in with maybe 1 or 2 decisions to wait for.  During the Carr years we were involved in lots of signing day "hat ceremonies" and almost never won (we frequently lost in battles such as us, FSU, Miami (YTM), and LSU.... one of these things is not like the others.... and we all knew we were only in the running to give the kid's list a little class).

It strikes me this year will be radically different.  Lots of new names on the radar with only a month to consider or reconsider their decisions.  I suspect that signing day and the few days prior will be to recruiting what the final week of 2014 was to coaching and hopefully just as successful.  Buckle Up!  Harbaugh!

I'm pretty sure Roquan Smith is making a signing day decision between us, Georgia and two others. Read that somewhere. He's visiting next week. Most people say he won't leave the South but he cancelled a visit to LSU in order to clear his schedule for M fwiw.

I was hoping he would be part of the Jan. 16 big time recruiting weekend, but it's still awesome to get him on campus. You never know what can happen on an official visit.

That would be a huge get if Harbaugh and company can reel him in. I would think Harbaugh, Mattison, Durkin, and Jackson will be all over this for the next few weeks. Would love to see Mora take an NFL gig and open it back up for KLS!

It is definitely a different feel.  Instead of the "I hope we hang on to all the verbal commits" vibe, it is much more of a "who we gonna get" thing.  Even if we miss on most of the high-profile targets, it will still be fascinating to see play out.

I do think Harbaugh will reel in 1-2 blue chip guys that we wouldn't have been in play for otherwise, but its still important to remember that he's been at a big time disadvantage. Anyone would have trouble putting together a great recruiting class with only a month to go before signing day. I wouldn't be surprised if the class rounds out with quite a few guys who aren't necessarily "top" guys, but they'll be great fits for what Harbaugh wants to do with his system.

Now 2016, that's where things can really take off. Especially if he has a big turnaround next season.

I think they'll be able to fill the class, one way or the other. It'd be nice to get Clark back on board. Other than him, I'm not sure any of the previous commits will find their way back into the class, maybe Weber. I also think it's possible they get a coulple of 4*/5* guys due to the swag/prominence of the coaches. They seem to have a lot of momentum right now so it'd be nice to capitalize on it.

I'm sure our recuiting class will improve between now and signing day, but I hope we keep our expectations in check. It's unlikely that Harbaugh will be able to flip prospects who haven't had much contact with Michigan and have been heavily recruited by other schools for months, if not years. He may be able to flip a few who are leaning toward other schools but have had Michigan on their radar.
