SIAP: Helmet Stickers Update

Submitted by ThisGuyFawkes on August 11th, 2021 at 5:59 PM

It appears that the helmet stickers spotted in Day 1 practice videos are not just a practice thing.

According to Angelique (Detroit News), the new sticker system will "tell the story of a player's career". The will include special decals for individual wins, including the program overall victory number for each game, as well as special stickers for rivalry games, all-conference and All-American selections, academic honors, bowl games, and other accomplishments. Captains will also have special stickers.

The first helmet decal each player received this year is the area code representing his hometown.

I think the idea of viewing the helmet as a keepsake and quick way to tell the story of a player's Michigan career is a cool and unique one. Now, if only we could apply the same thinking and creative energy to NIL...

MODS - Please delete if already posted, I looked on the board and only found the speculation based on Day 1 practice video - https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/day-1-fall-practice-video-new-helmet-stickers

The difference is that, according to Dave Ablauf's comments in the article, it sounds like the stickers will accumulate over the course of the player's career. So yeah, I do think they will end up looking more crowded than the ones from the Bo era, and what have been used so far.

I'm mostly ambivalent to it, and I have no pretense that opinion matters in this. If the players like it, then that's good enough for me. It will be interesting to see how it looks over the course of multiple years of stickers.

Hate to say it but if we win a lot of games this season, the stickers will look cool and be a source of unique inspiration for the players and team.

If we lose a bunch of games, they'll be looked at as silly, unnecessary clutter that messes up the winged helmet.

Either way, people will bitch about things that really only apply to the team. Is the season here yet?

I know a 2 year old girl that loves cute stickers too. Oooo they tell a storrry about every special player who is now a super special Michigan Man with special wecial stickers. So neat and cute guys, OMG.  This is like so good for our team.  All the meanies at OSU will be totes jelly of our special unique stickers.

Yep, we're fucked.  Let's get this shit over with I guess so we can get a new coach and maybe have a chance at football team without a contrived gimmicky b.s. culture that creates players who are champions in their own mind and underperform before transferring or being 1st round draft picks for NFL teams who know how to use talent and don't waste time with Motivational stickers and coloring books. I can't wait to hit the bottom of the BPONE so this nightmare can end.

If Michigan football made me that miserable, I definitely would not be spending one second of my time on a Michigan sports blog.   As a football fan, August should be a time of infinite possibilities not abject miseries.

It should be a time to believe that Rutgers Cade McNamara was not a mirage, that Chris Hinton and Mazi Smith are going to demonstrate that they deserved their lofty rankings, that Zak Zinter is going to be an all big ten center and that Steve Clinkscale is going to earn a $100,000 bonus and turn our pass defense into a top 25 unit and that we are going to have a great November.   It is definitely not a time to root against the Wolverines in hope that our next coach will solve all of our problems. (November may ultimately end up being the time to start hoping that, but no need to worry about it in August).

You're dead wrong. Pessimism is the most optimistic perspective. If I expect the worst and only pain and torture, then even the smallest successes can be truly appreciated. Go ahead and flaunt your optimism and then be crushed later when reality hits.  Nothing will ever be good enough for you. You'll always move the goalposts higher and higher.  When my expectations are exceeded, and that's the only possibility, then I'll enjoy my small victories while you wallow in your sorrow of impossible expectations that can never be met.

Damn you Joe, I actually agree with everything you said here in these 2 posts +1 and +1.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result. We have seen 6 years of the jh show and I'm sick of it as the fans AND his recruits are getting the short end of the stick while he has been the 4th highest paid college coach.  For some reason this fanbase gives him so much slack and makes excuses for him, FFS people, be objective for what he has AND hasn't achieved here.

I thought Harbaugh should have been fired after last season.   I don’t get to make that choice.   He wasn’t.   No sense in being miserable about it.   Hoping the team is good this year is not the same as making excuses for him.

I would argue that the definition of insanity is spending time on a message board commenting on a football team that seems to make you miserable.    Find a hobby that brings you joy.    Life is too short to spend discretionary time on things that make you unhappy.

We'll all see everyone we love die unless they have to mourn us first.  We all die alone after slowly decaying away for years, if you're lucky.  You didn't even choose to partake in this whole charade called living. Your parents decided that and now you get no choice to suffer and die partaking in this game you didn't choose to play. Sure, there will be "hobbies" along the way that bring fleating joy.  That's neat I guess. We all know how it ends though. So maybe bitching about Michigan football is trivial pointless endeavor, and it is, but so is everything else.

I’m really not sure how to respond to that.   You think that for some reason that because I hope that Cade McNamara has a good season, that means that I will be crushed if he doesn’t?   Or that if he does perform well, I somehow won’t enjoy it because I hoped it would happen?  I truly feel sorry for you if that is the way you go through life.    If the only way I could get joy was by anticipating failure, it would definitely make it hard to get up in the morning.

Kinda what I said on the Not UV post, but I did think it’d only be for practice. Career accomplishments for wins and awards. I’ll go devils advocate and say that it’s good that you need to do something that’s more of an actual accomplishment to get a sticker. Too many times I see a 3rd string guy with a helmet full of stickers cause he was early to practice or ran hard on punt coverage. Now we will see it where it takes a few years to accumulate stickers.

plus if the players like it then whatever its good with me.

This has nothing to do with wins or losses. For those that have played, it’s the journey, brotherhood and experience that matter.

I like it, and I m glad the players do

I love the idea too.  Maybe we can give players a golden sticker or pants or some extra cash for beating OSU.

On a serious thought though, what is the monetary value for Michigan beating OSU?

This is a really cool idea of the helmet telling a personal story it’s unique! Damn are those stickers ugly af I wish there was a way to clean up those decals.

Our athletic department does so bad with uniform details it’s laughable. The different colored wings from the Jersey Maize back in 2014 (they darkened the helmet but not the uniform). The M flags flying during non-conference season still as of 2019 being highlighter Maize. The way oversized going in the wrong direction helmet stickers in 2015. The spare jerseys used for eligible OL where the numbers look stitched on by a 3 year old and are way off center. Also, the names on the back sometimes being spaced differently (I remember Chris Evans’ name having like huge spaces between the letters).

I am sure there are more that I missed.

I always liked the stickers. We used to get them on the high school teams I played on. Downside is if they give out too many as the ones in the picture are pretty big and the helmet could get pretty crowded especially at the end of the season.
