Shrine game practice reports of Michigan players

Ivie used a spin move to get some penetration against Michigan's Erick Magnuson, but Magnuson recovered to stop Ivie from getting to the quarterback marker. Still, Ivie took away the ability for a quarterback to step up in the pocket on that rush

While Kalis had that ugly play against Brown, he's had a solid couple of days. He is a well-rounded interior blocker who fights hard at the point of attack. His run blocking is ahead of his pass protection, but Kalis (6-5, 305) has the talent to develop into a starting competitor at guard as a mid-round pick.

Michigan running back De'Veon Smith ran well on Tuesday, but he did have a fumble during the 11-on-11 running scrimmage.

One of the best players at the East-West Shrine this week has been Michigan running back De'Veon, Smith and he had a tremendous practice on Wednesday. In the linebacker vs. running back passing game one-on-ones Smith smocked Villanova linebacker Austin Calitro on a couple of reps. The last being an out route as he set up Calitro running straight at him, catching the linebacker flat-footed, and then beating him to the flat to get wide open.

Smith was superb in the team scrimmage. He ran an excellent wheel route to beat two defenders down the sideline for a potential long gain, but an inaccurate pass led to an incompletion. Smith followed that up by doing a great job in pass protection, as his right tackle was beaten quickly off the snap. Smith saw the end coming and threw his body into the chest to slow up the lineman and give his quarterback time to throw the ball. Both his route and the blocking earned Smith some a lot of praise from the coaching staff. In the team scrimmage, he also broke off a few chunk runs, weaving his way through defenders with quickness, balance, and vision.

Scouting sources told WalterFootball.com that Smith could be the best offensive prospect on the East team, and he has had a tremendous week to help his draft stock. If there is an injury or an opening for the Senior Bowl, don't be surprised if Smith gets called up.

Michigan safety Dymonte Thomas had a quality pass breakup coming over the top to slap a pass away.

  • Louisville defensive tackle DeAngelo Brown (6-0, 310) had some nice bull rushes in the one-on-ones. He has a real burst off the snap and he was even more impressive in the 11-on-11 team scrimmage. On one play, Brown was like bowling ball going through the offensive line to get a tackle for a loss on a zone run to the right. A few plays later, he bull-rushed through Michigan's Kyle Kalis to get what could have been a sack in an actual game. Brown is undersized, but he has burst to him with a strong lower body and natural pad level.

  • Florida State wide receiver Kermit Whitfield had a mixed day on Tuesday. On the plus side, his speed was giving defensive backs real problems. He burned Michigan safety Dymonte Thomas on a corner post route for a long touchdown and other defenders struggled to run with the fast Whitfield. However, North Carolina State Jack Tocho (6-0, 200) easily slapped away a 50-50 pass over the undersized Whitfield (5-8, 178). Whitfield also had a drop after getting open across the middle of the field. Whitfield is a speed mismatch, but he will have to compete to be a gadget player, given his size.

  • Mississippi State linebacker Richie Brown has played well in both practices. He is a tough run defender and also is respectable in zone coverage. Brown stayed around the ball in the team scrimmage to get an interception after Michigan safety Lano Hill made a nice play to deflect the pass into the air. Early in his career, Brown could start out as a backup linebacker and special teams contributor. In time, he could challenge to compete for a starting position.

"Florida Deveon Smith" needs to drafted quickly. That guy was boss. "Late 2016 Deveon Smith" probably doesn't get drafted. "Late 2016 Kalis" owes Smith an apology and a steak.

I can't say I thought that Rawls or Toussaint would play on Sundays, and yet they are.

De'Veon may be a diamond in the rough because our run blocking was sadly pretty poor overall.  I think he shines with space to do so.

Feels like just last week (it was) that a poster estimated Smith's chances at making an NFL roster at 0%, lower than anyone on our team save Matt Godin.

Thought that was super harsh at the time and this seems to prove it.  Smith may not be a transcendent talent, but he has the "NFL" skillset - physical runner, pass protection, enough athleticism.  I compared him to Mike Tolbert at the time.  He won't ever make a Pro Bowl, but he's got the skillset to carve our a nice career as a change of pace back (to the league's influx of speed guys) or do better behind a great O-Line.

I've said it before, but I think his pass blocking is what gets De'Veon drafted. Add in the fact that he's looking like a solid runner when there's actually some run blocking, and that just helps his stock even more.

Let's not forget that he beat out a "5 Star" and alleged number one running back in Green as well as Ty Isaac. There is definite talent and desire.

I have played backyard football with Mario Manningham and DeVeon Smith, obviously at different times...can anyone beat that comment?

DeVeon will work his ass off to get there..I think he has a career in the NFL, likely as a backup and may bounce around the league but he will show up when called on...It all depends on the situation he is put in as it does for all players..DeVeon is every bit the talent of a guy like Spencer Ware, imo

From Youngstown/Warren area? Met Manningham at a Howland/Harding game (I think it was De'Veon's senior year in high school), and went to school with D. Smith. Played on the basketball team with him his senior year, my junior year.

I was usually the one tasked with guarding him in practice, and while he wasn't really that good with basketball specific skills, let's just say a lanky kid with giving up 80 pounds and being half as athletic and a third as strong did not do so well boxing him out

Take the maize n blue goggles off my man. The one the the NFL values over EVERYTHING is the one the Smith just doesn't have-speed. He's just not quick enough in the hole or fast enough past the line of scrimmage-he's just not.

He's not getting drafted. He'll get a shot as an UDFA but I do t see him making a team.

Sorry.

Yes, Warren, Ohio

Im not wearing goggles today..If i was saying Deveon would be a star i could understand you...If you dont think he is as talented as Matt Asiata, Robert Turbin, hell even Jeremy Hill then you are entitled to that..However i think he is talented enough to be in the league for several years and perform respectfully when called on.

Maize n Blue goggles cut the other way on this board (ex: Schofield draft reactions and impending Kalis draft freakout). I bet he gets drafted late after Harbaugh talks to a few GMs and if not he'll make a team as a UDFA or in-season signing at the most injured position in football. So many college RBs can't protect for shit and you need a guy who won't get your expensive QB (and potentially season or even job) murdered more than explosive playmaking from, say, your third string RB.

I would love to see him make the NFL. He's a guy he gives everything he has, He lacks the first physical attribute you look for in a RB, but keeps beating out players that you would expect to be better. It's hard not to root for a player like De'Veon.

favorite Wolverine heading into the draft. He kept his head down, played hard as hell and beat out all comers. I hope he makes some good money in the NFL.

This might not impact how the 2017 recruiting class will end for Michigan, but two years ago, what were the odds that Michigan would have twelve players participating in college football all-star games and two others projected as NFL first-round draft choices this year?  Despite the sour ending to the 2016 season, it seems apparent that Jim Harbaugh’s connections to the NFL and the presence of several coaches with NFL coaching experience on Harbaugh’s staff have had a significant impact on making Michigan football players ready for the NFL.

Matt Godin, Delano Hill, Kyle Kalis, Erik Magnuson, De’Veon Smith, Channing Stribling and Dymonte Thomas are participating in the East-West Shrine Game.  Amara Darboh, Ben Gedeon, Ryan Glasgow, Jourdan Lewis and Chris Wormley will be playing in the Senior Bowl. Taco Charlton and Jabrill Peppers have been receiving mention as NFL first-round draft choices.

Kenny Allen, Ben Braden and Jehu Chesson will be given a chance to audition for pro scouts at Michigan’s Pro Day before the NFL Draft.  If Jeremy Clark and Drake Johnson aren't granted another year of eligibility, then, if healthy, they too probably will be auditioning for pro scouts. That would make 19 Michigan players from this season’s team having some chance to be competing in NFL training camps this coming summer.

Apologies for not including the one player who most likely would have been performing in a post-season all-star game or at least being considered as an early-round NFL draft selection had he not suffered a torn ACL in the Orange Bowl game.

I don't know whether the extent of his injury or the length of the recovery period will preclude Jake Butt from participating in an NFL training camp this coming summer, but, regardless of any risks involved, I believe that there will be several NFL teams considering an All-American tight end with impressive receiving skills and a Michigan team captain as a smart draft pick this year. And that would make an even twenty Michigan players from the 2016 team who might be seen in NFL training camps this coming summer.

our OL was probably below average. Maybe with higher quality lineman he can impress? He certainly can pass pro when needed, which helped our pass game often. In the blitz happy / pass happy NFL, he has potential value. If his Combine is strong, wouldn't be shocked to see him get drafted in a late round.
