Should we read anything into M offering Josh Shaw?
From Rivals, info in headline. Shaw is Rivals #3 corner in 2010 and a top-50 player. So, that's nice, but why now? Did we not think he was that good before? Or, are the coaches worried about pulling two of Christian, Mathis and Knight (and maybe Grimes, but I dunno)?
TomVH?
They're looking for the best players out there, and he's good. He played at the Gridiron Kings, and performed well. I'm not sure what you mean by, should we read into this. It's July, we have a need for corners, and he's good. He did make a jump in the rankings though, but I don't see RR and staff putting a lot of weight in the rankings.
I think Jorel* is trying to ask if the fact that we're just now offering Shaw means that the coaches suddenly have reason to believe that we won't get some of the expect commits from Mathis, Christian, and/or Knight. If so, that would imply that one of our higher rated corner prospects that's generally expected to end up here might be strongly considering someone else.
Personally, I think it's just because of the things that Tom said, he's been doing well at very public events (like Gridiron Kings) and now the coaches have seen enough of him to think him worthy of an offer. I don't think we can read anything into it. And I think that if we try, we'd start to go mad from trying to divine the thoughts of coaches trying to divine the thoughts of 17 year old kids.
*Shouldn't it be Jor-El? Or is that an allusion to something else?
I see. I don't think it's smart to put all your eggs in one basket. To bank on a kid's pending commitment, and not offer, or chase anyone else wouldn't be smart. Anything can happen with recruiting, and the coaches know that.
If Michigan had offered a local three star who was highly likely to commit I might follow his thinking, but this is a top-50 kid across the country. They just think he's good at football.
I get the logic. I just was wondering why the coaches thought he was good at football now, but not (good enough to get an offer) before. A strong camp performance makes sense. Thanks Tom.
Five years ago or more, before the current mania for securing early verbals had set in, nobody would be sweating that Cullen Christian or Ifill or whoever hadn't yet verbaled. We wouldn't start getting anxious until some way into the fall season. Now, people are biting their nails, and it's still almost 8 months until signing day. At this rate, some folks are going to need Ambien on a drip feed by then.
Ambien is for sleep, Ativan perhaps?
I think he meant people will have trouble sleeping.
n/m then.
How interested is he (if at all) is the real question?
FWIW, Rashad Knight has been saying Florida State is telling him they'll be offering very soon, which would end his recruitment.
I've heard different, FWIW.
I'm hearing what OB is hearing.
That FSU won't offer or that it won't end his recruitment?
I talked to him about a week ago. I asked him pretty much this exact question. He said he's not sure why everyone thinks he'd commit right away.
He wants to drag it out, and make sure he sees everyone. He said, "I definitely want to get up to Michigan, and see that place." Every time we've spoke he's had genuine interest in coming up to Michigan. He's never been before, so that could change a lot.
ND feels really good about their chances with Shaw, we may have entered this race a little too late.
From my understanding, we are little late with our offer, but just recently Shaw initiated the contact with the staff. He got phone numbers from Brennan Clay, who apparently had very good things to say about UM.
I'm not sure why but there's a part of me that still thinks Brennan Clay is going to end up in this class. Foolish thinking?
In my opinion, Clay always struck me as a very well spoken kid with a thought out plan for his recruitment. If we could have just gotten him on campus for an official even if it was just for fun to watch his buddy Tate play I think we could have gotten him.
But, he seems to be pretty set on the Sooners. Wish him all the best.
At this point it is never foolish thinking to believe someone may end up in this class. Its 8 months before signing day a lot can happen in that amount of time. These recruits have a lot of time to sit and rethink their decisions. If UofM has a good season i would not be surprised to see some guys we thought we wouldnt get committ to us.
Foolish? Perhaps; we'll see what comes to pass. Wishful? Yes; nothing wrong with that.
Is it just me, or should top-50 recruits not have to get our staff's number from their friends? I know we're in a no-contact period but...
A lot of irish fans are feeling overly confident based on some of Shaw's original comments, which were quite a few weeks before he was offered by ND. We are in a very good position with him but imo many fans are way to certain on him. I really am surprised that he hadn't been offered yet by UM
UM will have their work cut out for them as he has already setup or in the process of finalizing his official visits.
@ND v usc, @lsu v uf, @osu v usc, @UTenn and @ou plus usc is in his backyard and will be getting more unofficial visits and is a definite contender.
Part of the appeal at Notre Dame was their depth chart at corner, and we all know where Michigan is at with depth. I think they're late, but he seems sincere in giving them a shot.
It will be interesting to follow for sure, LSU offered fairly recently after he said he was interested in hearing more about them and they have an official visit already.
ND and USC were both referred to as a "dream school" by Shaw and with usc he went as far as to say that he would "commit on the spot with a usc offer". That along with his non official visit to usc and the poodle's new commitment policy, it has me less than sold on our actual chances, but an official is a good place to start.
I would not be at all surprised to see Tenn get bumped out of his OV list in favor of another school, I think they were the first of those five to offer, and are really not wowing their higher tier recruits. Plus I am sure half of the Mgoblog community has probably received a Tenn. offer, at the rate Kiffin is offering
Also if interested it is assumed that we would take 2 more CBs should they decide to fall that way.
I think Michigan is just concentrating their efforts elsewhere. We've only offered a handful of prospects from California this year (Jefferson, Parker, Clay, Barr, Riley off the top of my head) and haven't had much success. None of our coaches have great California contacts.
At some point, ND's cornerback recruiting might spill over to Michigan. Not that Shaw would necessarily be scared off by Lo Wood or Spencer Boyd, but the reverse might happen... Considering Wood was down to Michigan and ND and Boyd was down to Michigan, ND, and Georgia (who just took Robey), we might want to keep our eyes on them down the road.
Anything can happen but boyd and wood wont be jumping ship only because we add another CB especially if it is Riggs who they're both helping to recruit. Plus they're both the perfect size and will be in a great position to see the field when a team goes 3 or 4 wide.
You mention california and it was something that I was wondering about a few weeks ago. Doesn't look like RR ever offered the west coast while at wv and the same with Robinson while he was at syracuse but its some fertile ground thats for sure.
Kevin Newsome and Shavodrick Beaver were both supposedly recruiting guys to Michigan, too...
Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson... (I kid, I kid)
yeah I can understand why you might not be so swayed by that but with ND recruiting it has always been a very good sign of how strong the verbal is.
Omar Hunter disagrees.
