Shaun Wade Opts out
Interesting how he is opting out right after optimism started stirring for a re vote. Maybe he is sick of the back and forth. Can't blame him.

Hahahahaha he was never playing!! This is just comical at this point. What’s next Aiden Hutchinson opting out too??
September 14th, 2020 at 9:14 AM ^
Haven't read the OSU rule book but assume, since there isn't any football, they're actually expecting him to take classes.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:16 AM ^
This right here is a great guess and is going to absolutely jump up and bite some players if the Big Ten does start up. The August decision seemed so permanent for the fall that I’m going to bet some players absolutely did exactly that.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:13 AM ^
Either October doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen and he doesn’t want to wait for a later season or he wasn’t opting out because he assumed there wouldn’t be a season anyways. Not looking good imo.

I see a lot of discussion about what this means since Wade's dad led the protests. It could be as simple as Wade's dad didn't know his son was leaning toward opting out. We don't know if Wade's dad and Wade talked about the protest before hand or not. Parents do embarrassing things all the time to kids.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:29 AM ^
Well, you would think that Shaun would tell his dad he was planning on opting out anyways when he saw him leading the protests. Unless his goal was the make his dad look foolish.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:32 AM ^
Those protests were almost a month ago. That is why I said leaning. Wade may have been uncertain in August and wanted to play when it could have been fairly normal season. Now that it will be an odd, truncated season starting in mid-October Wade doesn't think it is worth it as a top-15 pick.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:34 AM ^
You mean like posting your flight record locator on the internet and having someone cancel it?
What you’re saying could be correct, but I highly doubt it. I think October is off the table.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:23 AM ^
So, does daddy call him a Jack Wagon?
September 14th, 2020 at 9:25 AM ^
Definitely an optimistic opt-out.
I don't think he wanted to play school anymore.
September 14th, 2020 at 10:16 AM ^
Reading is fundamental, maybe you should have stuck it out in school for a couple more years:
He graduated from Ohio State in August with a degree in sport industry.
September 14th, 2020 at 9:41 AM ^
well now we know who wasn't playing in the bowl game in January, don't we?
September 14th, 2020 at 9:48 AM ^
I’ve seen it discussed that in order to be eligible for the playoff the B1G needed to start by 10/10. I have no idea if that’s true or not, but if it is true and the season starts on 10/17, I could see some players opting out deciding an 8-game season isn’t worth it.
September 14th, 2020 at 10:05 AM ^
How dumb and shortsighted if we start 10/17.
However since we have diddly poo of a chance to make the playoff I suppose it’s funny that osu would get screwed if we start 10/17 since they probably all think they were going back. You thought!
September 14th, 2020 at 11:27 AM ^
Because I feel like Michigan has no chance at beating OSU this year, I have no problem sitting here with a cancelled football season to keep them out of it.
But I also believe that football shouldn't be played based on everything that has been happening the first couple of weeks. I tend to agree with Brians post that he put up today.
September 14th, 2020 at 10:06 AM ^
I don’t think 10/10 is a hard cutoff. The CFP has made no indication of that. The issue is getting enough games in to qualify when compared to other teams.
10/17 would work for the CFP in my opinion. I think he’s opting out because October is unlikely altogether, and possibly because he’s concerned about COVID.
September 14th, 2020 at 10:23 AM ^
Call me crazy but I'm guessing that the CFP cares about what most other entities care about: $, and lots of it. They'll do whatever it takes to make as much of it as possible. If OSU could be part of it they'll figure out a way to make it happen
September 14th, 2020 at 9:53 AM ^
Good. Screw OSU.
September 14th, 2020 at 10:10 AM ^
For those keeping score it’s DB for DB and OL for OL.
September 14th, 2020 at 10:34 AM ^
Everyone was making a big deal that no OSU player were opting out. I always felt this was because they KNEW they had a great shot at the CFP Championship this year. FWIW I also believed that you would have seen a MASS exodus of OSU players (even if the season started on time) if and when OSU dropped an early game.
OSU Seniors and probable 2021 draft picks have nothing to play for if no CFP option exists — maybe Fields if he still thinks he can get the Heisman. They have beaten M every year and there is a decent chance OSU can do it again in 2020 even with opt outs (pending the backup QB situation).
September 14th, 2020 at 10:55 AM ^
Exactly this. It’s CFP or bust for half of their starters. We’ll see if an October date gets announced this week. If not, the exodus will begin.
Regarding Fields, even if October happens you’d think the Heisman is a long shot at this point. He’ll only get 8/9 games to rack up stats while others get 11, plus with no non-con against Oregon he won’t have many showcase games. Guess if they hang 100 on everyone, like all the 11 Warriors bruhs predict, he could have an outside chance. Not worth risking injury IMO.

All signs seem to point to the fact that Mr. Wade was simply bitter that his son passed up starting his NFL career for an unrealized college season. I don't blame him for that. I just wish he was transparent about it. Now that his son has declared, he can sign with an agent and at least start receiving money for his services. It's one thing to pass up on thousand/millions of dollars when you have a chance to go out there and improve your stock and raise your brand. It's another, to give it ALL up. I don't really think it's about October, CFB playoffs or national championship at this point. It's simply cutting bait and moving on.
September 14th, 2020 at 10:59 AM ^
This makes me suspicious of the reports that football is eminent. Why opt out now if there is going to be a vote in the next few days and you can delay until then?
I think they can sign with an agent and still return as long as they don't accept money but this makes me wonder if this all wasn't more political cover from the Big Ten.
September 14th, 2020 at 11:05 AM ^
If OSU goes undefeated and wins the BIG Ten, they will make the CFP regardless of if their final snap was played even 15 min before the selection. If they do not go undefeated, the BIG Ten will not be selected into the CFP no matter how anyone else does, undefeated or not.
September 14th, 2020 at 11:25 AM ^
It’s shocking to me that the likely second pick in the draft, Fields, hasn’t opted out.
September 14th, 2020 at 1:12 PM ^
I assume he's waiting a bit and, honestly, I've heard conflicting reports about his draft stock. He's probably a first-rounder but I do think there are questions about his accuracy and overall ability when he isn't in that offense. So I could see him wanting to stick it out a bit to boost his stock.
September 14th, 2020 at 11:27 AM ^
OSU is asking him to take a paycut because of fewer games. . .
he's holding out.
September 14th, 2020 at 11:52 AM ^
Was it mentioned yet that all early entries have left the BIG10 because of commissioner Warren, yet? I mean all decisions made that were horrible, or considered detrimental to every college player is because of Kevin, right?
September 14th, 2020 at 1:38 PM ^
Yeah, especially Micah Parson, Rondale Moore and Rashod Bateman, he's really the only reason why they opted out.
September 14th, 2020 at 1:02 PM ^
This always felt like a bit of a media circus thing from Wade's dad so this doesn't surprise me too much.
I assume that he wanted to play but when it was clear it might be this weird sorta-season thing we're seeing now he figured it wasn't worth the hassle. I don't blame him for going to the pros.
September 14th, 2020 at 1:40 PM ^
Maybe Wade's dad is tapping into his own Lavar Ball mindset and just generating publicity to boost his son's "fame". Spoiler alert, it didn't work.
September 14th, 2020 at 1:32 PM ^
Ok so they'll just use the next 5*- 4* on-deck.
September 14th, 2020 at 2:42 PM ^
Reports are that both him and Wyatt Davis will opt back in if October ends up happening
September 14th, 2020 at 3:28 PM ^
I believe it was Wade's father who was instrumental in the initial protests regarding the cancellation of the season, so there's something oddly poetic about it in a way. That said, it does make it sound like October may not be on the footing that everyone would rather it was.
