Setting Recruiting Post Schedule Expectations

Submitted by WestQuad on March 12th, 2024 at 8:44 AM

I'm starting to get impatient that I haven't heard any recruiting rumblings now that most of the coaches have officially been announced. I mean, it's been four days since the announcement, what are they doing?  So I looked up some of the rules in order to set my own expectations.

TLDR-It will be slow until after tax day.

April 1st to June 26th we should be getting prospective Juniors on campus

April 15th-30th the spring transfer portal opens.  I believe we can sign athletes anytime after they enter the portal.

July 1st--Senior visits can start.

From the write-ups I think our staff, other than Martindale* will be a recruiting juggernaut.  If I've made copy and paste errors or got something wrong please correct me.

Transfer Portal

Athletes tell their current school's compliance office they have decided to explore a transfer, and the compliance office then has two business days to enter that athlete's name into the portal.

Winter Window:  December 4th + 30 days

Spring Window:  April 15th - 30th

High School Recruiting

D1 football coaches can send athletes recruiting questionnaires, camp brochures and non-athletic institutional publications freshman and sophomore year. Effective for the 2023-24 school year, the NCAA now allows contact between coaches and athletes to begin June 15 of the athlete’s junior year.

Junior Year:

  • June 15 before junior year: Athletes can receive any form of private, electronic communication. This includes emails, recruiting materials, texts and direct messages on social media.
  • April 1 through the Sunday before the last Wednesday in June: A college may pay for a prospective student-athlete and two family members to visit campus. After this date, a college may offer an expense-paid visit after Sept. 1 of senior year.

Senior Year:

  • July 1 before senior year: Coaches can contact athletes off-campus, but only during the contact periods. Coaches are only allowed six off-campus contacts with each student-athlete.
  • First day of classes: Athletes can take unlimited official visits. Only one per school.
  • September 1: Coaches can call athletes once a week after this time, and they can call recruits unlimited times during the contact period.

Evaluation days: Coaches can evaluate each recruit three times. They can take one evaluation per recruit in the fall, and then two evaluations from April 15 to May 31.

*Seems like a guy named Wink should be able to recruit.  Know what I mean?  Wink Wink.  Nudge Nudge.

I discovered that French Roast is awful tasting, but is a lot better if you add milk

Ugh, I HIGHLY disagree. French roast is THE roast. Maybe it was the beans used? Most roasters like to use Indonesian or Javan beans for French roast, which I don't like at all. It draws out all the notes in unpleasant ways. French roasted Mexican or Central American beans. on the other hand, is coffee ambrosia. Some roasts work with some beans but not others. Also, I add neither milk nor creamer to my brew.

I've largely switched to tea, but in general I disagree!

I think French roast should be used for lower-quality beans where the natural flavors aren't great. For single origin beans I prefer a light roast all the way, even for espresso, so the flavors of the beans are magnified instead of covered up by the darkness of the roast and the acid is lower.

Come to think of it, the same actually goes for tea. There are some dark roast oolongs that I really like drinking (white2tea's Canton Canon for anyone curious), but they taste mainly of the roast and the charcoal used to do it so the quality of the tea matters less. But with something like dancong, tgy, or yancha, I want to taste the leaves and the roast.

Interesting that you say that, because the chocolate flavor that you're talking about is exactly what I like about Mexican coffees. I think with the lighter roast it's more akin to a high quality dark chocolate like Valrhona because there are still the fruity/cherry notes present, and those disappear with too much caramelization.

In fact, light roast Chiapas is generally my favorite coffee, though I love me some Central/South American beans and wet-processed Indonesian stuff too.

If you like cinnamon and tea you should be on the lookout for some Rou Gui oolongs, which can have huge cinnamon flavors.

I felt like I had a flood of "this HS prospect has heard from Michigan" posts from recruiting guys in my Twitter timeline this weekend for the first time in a while.  Agree with the sentiment that the staff will be active and effective on the trail.

Will be interesting to see how the targets change with the staff turnover.  I'm expecting that there will be a whole new batch of 4* guys to read up on and by that I mean for Alex to research and post about.

Adjusting my personal expectations for what "recruiting" is in today's CFB landscape. Our AD has made his stance on NIL very clear, and personally I think that alone gets Michigan off of some of the top prospects lists every year. It is my opinion that SM will try to recruit similar style to JH. Find under scouted players they feel like fit the system and will work hard. I'm fine with that as long as we still pull in a JJ, or Donovan Edwards type per class. If UM continues to use the portal as well as they have I think "recruiting ranking" means less. For example the '23 class was ranked like 18th or something but brought in Tuttle, Barner, Henderson, Nugent, Hinton, Hausman, Wallace, Stewart and James Turner. All of which played a key role in winning the National Championship. I would be suprised if any team brought in more talent in one year with recruiting/portal than UM did that year.

I thought all we do now is the Alabama approach so eloquently admitted by Nick Saban of outbidding for a team of 5 star recruits. All that other stuff is old fashioned. It's not like we'll all retire someday and realize actions have consequences. Pssshaaww.

We won't be getting any more recruits. Ever.

Didn't you hear? OSU sources who are deep in the know are saying the NCAA is going to come down like the hammer of Thor on Michigan football, basketball and hockey any day now, and it will be the end of Michigan Athletics as we know it.

The thunder of their vengeance will echo through Ann Arbor's corridors like the gust of a thousand winds!!

/s if not already obvious. I just got too much of a kick out of the previous thread.

I don’t know about all this “stuff” with Wink and the staff.   Do these young men - especially on Defense - really want to be coached by those with NFL experience - and, the Ravens system?

(Yes - being sarcastic…)

OMG - I'm going to call my lawyer now.   Should I notify anyone in Michigan's athletic department about what I did?

There were a lot of people around - and when I tailgate - I often give cheeseburgers to "friends of friends" just to be hospitable.

And - i offered beverages too - some people took bottles of water - and, more than one Gatorade might have been distributed too.

Very, very sorry for my reckless behavior.
