They were before my time, but we have a couple of them that we still use with our little ones when teaching them to read. They are insufferable to listen to as an adult, but they do a great job of teaching children to read via simple sentences and mass repetition of words and similar phonetic sounds.

"they do a great job of teaching children to read via simple sentences and mass repetition of words and similar phonetic sounds."

I'm not an educator—just an educated layman—but I agree with you. I think the harsh criticism of whole-word reading instruction (the basic core of the Dick & Jane books) by phonics enthusiasts of subsequent years has always been a bit silly.

The Dick & Jane books were almost universally used in American schoolrooms from the 1930s through the 1960s, and the generations that learned to read with them went to college, grad school, got doctorates in engineering, physics, and a whole host of other advanced fields, and proceeded to conceive, design, plan, build, and pilot the American space program that sent humans and machines to the moon and a good part of the solar system.

I grew up with these books, too.  I do remember one called "And Some Bread" (or something similar).  The kid in the book was making a sandwich and each page had a new ingredient (meat, cheese, lettuce, etc.) and when you flipped the page, "and some bread" was the repetitive reading assignment.  It was fun because the sandwich was so tall.  Mom never let me make one of those sandwiches!

I think this would've worked better if you'd brutally mutilated Dr. Seuss instead of run Spot run.

They cannot block you, Mason I am.

They cannot block you with a...

Okay, I've already lost interest in that, but I think you get what I mean. Step up your game.

Oh my! Did Dick, Jane and Sally teach you how to read, too???

Edit: Oops. Guess I should have read other responses before I posted mine. Looks as though many of us know D, J and S quite well.

in recent weeks i heard his name less in games than we did early. Is he hitting a wall? I heard his name a couple times this week against Nebraska, so it reminded me... or is he just part of the rotating inside DTs and gets his chances when they happen?

Its not a glamorous position, but when they do something big, its definitely noticeable. a la Maurice Hurst.

I would add, that while I'm not an X's and O's guy, watching him play... i see something different. To see what he does as a freshman against some stout OLman, I'm excited to see how he progresses. I think he's a top NFL pick if he continues like this. Mauler inside.
