I dunno but here's the GOAT and Blake Corum expressing mutual admiration. They should move heaven and earth to make him honorary captain this Saturday.

Is everyone really missing the Dick and Jane reference?
November 14th, 2022 at 8:49 AM ^
The Dick and Jane reading books were phased out of most American classrooms by the 1980s, so if you're 40 or younger, you'll likely have no clue what EZ was doing.
IOW, the only people here who understood what they were reading here are old farts like me.

They were before my time, but we have a couple of them that we still use with our little ones when teaching them to read. They are insufferable to listen to as an adult, but they do a great job of teaching children to read via simple sentences and mass repetition of words and similar phonetic sounds.

"they do a great job of teaching children to read via simple sentences and mass repetition of words and similar phonetic sounds."
I'm not an educator—just an educated layman—but I agree with you. I think the harsh criticism of whole-word reading instruction (the basic core of the Dick & Jane books) by phonics enthusiasts of subsequent years has always been a bit silly.
The Dick & Jane books were almost universally used in American schoolrooms from the 1930s through the 1960s, and the generations that learned to read with them went to college, grad school, got doctorates in engineering, physics, and a whole host of other advanced fields, and proceeded to conceive, design, plan, build, and pilot the American space program that sent humans and machines to the moon and a good part of the solar system.

I grew up with these books, too. I do remember one called "And Some Bread" (or something similar). The kid in the book was making a sandwich and each page had a new ingredient (meat, cheese, lettuce, etc.) and when you flipped the page, "and some bread" was the repetitive reading assignment. It was fun because the sandwich was so tall. Mom never let me make one of those sandwiches!

I believe recent educators have brought Dick back into elementary schools.
November 14th, 2022 at 9:32 PM ^
I thought everyone knew what Dick and Jane, Tip and Mitten, etc, were.
What's really shocking is there are younger people that don't know what 9/11 is about.

I may be on an island, but I thought this was an awesome thread. And, I appreciate EC’s frequent threads with quality embeds. EC makes this board a lot better, IMO.

in recent weeks i heard his name less in games than we did early. Is he hitting a wall? I heard his name a couple times this week against Nebraska, so it reminded me... or is he just part of the rotating inside DTs and gets his chances when they happen?
Its not a glamorous position, but when they do something big, its definitely noticeable. a la Maurice Hurst.
I would add, that while I'm not an X's and O's guy, watching him play... i see something different. To see what he does as a freshman against some stout OLman, I'm excited to see how he progresses. I think he's a top NFL pick if he continues like this. Mauler inside.
