SEC opening weekend football schedule released

Submitted by BlueTuesday on August 17th, 2020 at 6:02 PM

The SEC released their opening weekend schedule. The full schedule will be released tonight at 7 on the SEC network.

Sure looks like there will be at least some college football this year.

I must admit that my heart is absolutely torn at the moment.

The B1G's schedule, as released 2 weeks ago, honestly wasn't much better:

Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, Minnesota and Iowa (a combined 42-12 in-conference in 2019, with no team worse than 6-3)

were playing

Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, Michigan State and Maryland (a combined 18-36 in-conference in 2019, with only 1 team with a winning record, IU at 5-4).

BIG10 blows.  Our guys will be watching the SEC on TV at Shemmy Hall with their Logs in their hands!    So stupid.  BIG10 packed it in way too early.  Start practicing Coach H!

Obviously you don't have much of a log!   Well they will be holding them now!   It's all over but the shouting.  Dumb move by the Big10.   Fire up the TVs at Shemmy Hall; that's all they will have.  Hold Yo Log!

Before you reply, understand I have no power at all, so all I can do is criticize and troll!  That's what it's come to in 2020.  Eff everything!

You're the guy that sides with the conference with worse schools, worse doctors, and sleazier priorities over the ones with better priorities and medical facilities -- all because you're guided by a desire to see unpaid students entertain you during a pandemic. You're what the French call an asshole.

It's very interesting to me that people argue that it is actually safer for these athletes to play because of the testing and resources that come along with it. whether or not this is true, the reason the B1G is cancelling is simply a liability issue. Therefore, i truly don't actually see a point in that argument either way.

I predict that if the season does start, it will fail miserably. I have a hard time believing that they can go even a few weeks without a covid outbreak and then all hell will break loose. I'm sure the BIG 10 and PAC 12 will look good in the end, putting the health and well being of their athletes above the financial losses and exterior pressures.

Well I think it's predictable that an "outbreak" will occur on some team. The greater question is: why should an outbreak where almost everyone will have zero or minor symptoms cause any "hell to break loose?" Since Covid and flu are comparable risk levels for college athletes, what do we do when a flu outbreak hits a team? Does all hell break loose, or do we isolate and treat the team members who show symptoms, keep them from at risk others, and then move on with substitutes stepping in?

Remember all the outbreaks this summer when teams started getting back together? What happened there? Nothing happened is the answer, with rare exceptions everyone was fine. That is what we can expect is the season is played. some rare exceptions, and everyone fine.

The B1G and PAC-12 cancelled because they didn’t want to face massive class action lawsuits in 4-5 years from players who get long term heart and lung damage from playing and have to give up playing in the pros. It’s a perfectly legitimate reason, but let’s not pretend they did it for the safety and well-being of their student athletes.

That’s just the perfect cover story they’ll use to justify all of it. But one thing I’ve learned after 10-15 years of watching college football is that the powers that be don’t care about the well-being of the people who actually make them their money.

I don't doubt for a second that those are the true motivations. However, cancelling accomplishes both. The leagues save themselves from litigation while the players are not put in situations by the school that might put them at risk. The only motivation to have a season is purely financial and greed induced.

Or, to balance the (demonstrably low but still there) risks of Covid against the risks that already exist to players like flu, pneumonia, concussions, car accidents, serious injuries and others, then rationally assess those risks, make them clear, and allow the players to decide for themselves, with strict rules for social distancing from those who are at greater risk.

Of course that would be applying rational standards to the decision. Instead we'd prefer to speculate, without a shred, not one shred, of fact about long term damages from a virus most who get it won't even feel. Alone among any other decision In life we make personally or in public policy, for Covid we think making decisions for others via speculation about potential things that might go wrong should rule the day, rather than making decisions on the facts we know right now. Or perhaps letting the people who it impacts make those decisions.

I agree there will be some football. I think a few leagues will play a few weeks before inevitably having to close up shop. Enjoy week 1 boys! It might be all we're getting till next fall

Recruits will be planning visits to the big games soon...

Will another player break thru like Burrow did?

Hopefully some Sat night good matchups...

Question I have is, will recruits be able to attend the games? That'll be a decided advantage for these conferences that are playing, even if its a few games. If so, I'd jam pack the recruits into the first few games. Some of our southern recruits might get some wandering eyes.

Spoiler alert: There won't be any college football this year. But enjoy that carrot dangling in front of you!

At least they are trying to play - instead of scrapping the season a month before it starts...

Better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all, imho. Most of us would never have gotten to where we are without trying and failing.

No idea if these 3 leagues will play, or play a season, but I do give them credit for trying.
