SEC opening weekend football schedule released
The SEC released their opening weekend schedule. The full schedule will be released tonight at 7 on the SEC network.
Sure looks like there will be at least some college football this year.
I must admit that my heart is absolutely torn at the moment.

Nice to see that the SEC isn't even trying to hide that they gave their premier programs warm up games for week 1

The B1G's schedule, as released 2 weeks ago, honestly wasn't much better:
Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, Minnesota and Iowa (a combined 42-12 in-conference in 2019, with no team worse than 6-3)
were playing
Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, Michigan State and Maryland (a combined 18-36 in-conference in 2019, with only 1 team with a winning record, IU at 5-4).

They still doing their annual second to last week cream puff? Wouldn't be the SEC without that late season cream puff.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:11 PM ^
BIG10 blows. Our guys will be watching the SEC on TV at Shemmy Hall with their Logs in their hands! So stupid. BIG10 packed it in way too early. Start practicing Coach H!
August 17th, 2020 at 6:17 PM ^
Do you often watch football with your penis in your hand? Because, you know, that’s a bit odd
August 17th, 2020 at 6:28 PM ^
Admittedly if I had a "log" it would likely be in my hand a lot
August 17th, 2020 at 8:18 PM ^
I think they call it lumberjackin’
August 17th, 2020 at 6:38 PM ^
Obviously you don't have much of a log! Well they will be holding them now! It's all over but the shouting. Dumb move by the Big10. Fire up the TVs at Shemmy Hall; that's all they will have. Hold Yo Log!
Before you reply, understand I have no power at all, so all I can do is criticize and troll! That's what it's come to in 2020. Eff everything!
August 18th, 2020 at 6:11 PM ^
Sometimes if USC is playing.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:26 PM ^
You're the guy that sides with the conference with worse schools, worse doctors, and sleazier priorities over the ones with better priorities and medical facilities -- all because you're guided by a desire to see unpaid students entertain you during a pandemic. You're what the French call an asshole.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:40 PM ^
No. You are an asshole. Says right here. look...
Time will tell, but I think the BIG10 ended it way too early.
Anyway, make sure to hold your LOG.
I just don't care anymore. 2020! Weee!

It's very interesting to me that people argue that it is actually safer for these athletes to play because of the testing and resources that come along with it. whether or not this is true, the reason the B1G is cancelling is simply a liability issue. Therefore, i truly don't actually see a point in that argument either way.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:43 PM ^
The players inside the program are monitored, tracked, tested, charted, fed, watched, etc.
Outside the program is worse.
Anyway I have no power.

I predict that if the season does start, it will fail miserably. I have a hard time believing that they can go even a few weeks without a covid outbreak and then all hell will break loose. I'm sure the BIG 10 and PAC 12 will look good in the end, putting the health and well being of their athletes above the financial losses and exterior pressures.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:27 PM ^
I don’t know. Lots of schools have had outbreaks already and they’re still moving forward.
The owner of my company is a well connected Notre Dame alumni and he’s certain that the ACC is moving forward with football as well.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:29 PM ^
Well I think it's predictable that an "outbreak" will occur on some team. The greater question is: why should an outbreak where almost everyone will have zero or minor symptoms cause any "hell to break loose?" Since Covid and flu are comparable risk levels for college athletes, what do we do when a flu outbreak hits a team? Does all hell break loose, or do we isolate and treat the team members who show symptoms, keep them from at risk others, and then move on with substitutes stepping in?
Remember all the outbreaks this summer when teams started getting back together? What happened there? Nothing happened is the answer, with rare exceptions everyone was fine. That is what we can expect is the season is played. some rare exceptions, and everyone fine.
August 17th, 2020 at 7:04 PM ^
What happened there? 15 big ten football players have myocarditis
Go look them and their families in the eyes and tell them "nothing happened"
August 17th, 2020 at 7:13 PM ^
Bc Covid caused myocarditis? You sure about that? A bunch of cardio doctors would disagree w that
August 17th, 2020 at 9:01 PM ^
Heart conditions are often discovered in preseason physicals. I wonder what the statistics are for this condition on a typical year? I wonder if we would even know or if that information would generally be kept private. Seem like important questions to ask before shaming someone...
August 17th, 2020 at 7:39 PM ^
The B1G and PAC-12 cancelled because they didn’t want to face massive class action lawsuits in 4-5 years from players who get long term heart and lung damage from playing and have to give up playing in the pros. It’s a perfectly legitimate reason, but let’s not pretend they did it for the safety and well-being of their student athletes.
That’s just the perfect cover story they’ll use to justify all of it. But one thing I’ve learned after 10-15 years of watching college football is that the powers that be don’t care about the well-being of the people who actually make them their money.
August 17th, 2020 at 7:59 PM ^
And how will they be able to prove the contracted covid from playing football?
August 17th, 2020 at 8:10 PM ^
I don't doubt for a second that those are the true motivations. However, cancelling accomplishes both. The leagues save themselves from litigation while the players are not put in situations by the school that might put them at risk. The only motivation to have a season is purely financial and greed induced.
August 17th, 2020 at 8:22 PM ^
Or, to balance the (demonstrably low but still there) risks of Covid against the risks that already exist to players like flu, pneumonia, concussions, car accidents, serious injuries and others, then rationally assess those risks, make them clear, and allow the players to decide for themselves, with strict rules for social distancing from those who are at greater risk.
Of course that would be applying rational standards to the decision. Instead we'd prefer to speculate, without a shred, not one shred, of fact about long term damages from a virus most who get it won't even feel. Alone among any other decision In life we make personally or in public policy, for Covid we think making decisions for others via speculation about potential things that might go wrong should rule the day, rather than making decisions on the facts we know right now. Or perhaps letting the people who it impacts make those decisions.
August 17th, 2020 at 8:31 PM ^
Or you know, the fact that people are questioning whether or not it's truly "safer" to not play football. Imagine if these kids were safer playing football. Boy, wouldn't you feel awfully foolish for making that kind of statement
August 17th, 2020 at 6:31 PM ^
I don't wanna be bored during the fall months so I'm gonna watch.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:36 PM ^
Me too. I’ll be rooting for every team that plays Notre Dame.
August 17th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
Think I’m gonna use the time productively and maybe learn another language, spend more time with the fam.
August 17th, 2020 at 7:32 PM ^
I think playing college football is a terrible idea this year but I have to admit, I'll absolutely be watching.
August 17th, 2020 at 7:41 PM ^
I agree there will be some football. I think a few leagues will play a few weeks before inevitably having to close up shop. Enjoy week 1 boys! It might be all we're getting till next fall
August 17th, 2020 at 7:53 PM ^
Are they going to have fans in attendance? Because if it's safe enough to play it should be safe enough to pack 100k truckers into their stadiums.
August 17th, 2020 at 8:08 PM ^
Recruits will be planning visits to the big games soon...
Will another player break thru like Burrow did?
Hopefully some Sat night good matchups...
August 17th, 2020 at 8:09 PM ^
I'll watch.
August 17th, 2020 at 8:40 PM ^
Question I have is, will recruits be able to attend the games? That'll be a decided advantage for these conferences that are playing, even if its a few games. If so, I'd jam pack the recruits into the first few games. Some of our southern recruits might get some wandering eyes.
August 17th, 2020 at 8:53 PM ^
If these leagues do play I can't imagine they will get through more than a couple of games before scrapping it.
August 17th, 2020 at 8:58 PM ^
Spoiler alert: There won't be any college football this year. But enjoy that carrot dangling in front of you!
August 17th, 2020 at 9:45 PM ^
At least they are trying to play - instead of scrapping the season a month before it starts...
August 18th, 2020 at 9:42 AM ^
Better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all, imho. Most of us would never have gotten to where we are without trying and failing.
No idea if these 3 leagues will play, or play a season, but I do give them credit for trying.
August 18th, 2020 at 3:22 AM ^
I will watch. Including all of the commercials
August 18th, 2020 at 9:37 AM ^
I see the Vols are playing in Nashville @ Vanderbilt this Thanksgiving weekend. Given I now have nothing else planned that day, maybe I'll take in that game.
August 19th, 2020 at 5:15 PM ^
I live about 40 minutes from Nashville so I may be there as well.
