SEC footbaw coming to Ypsilanti in 2019

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Per a release, Kentucky will host Eastern Michigan at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington on Sept. 30, 2017. The game will be the first ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. Two seasons later on Sept. 7, 2019, Kentucky will travel to face EMU at Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti. The Wildcats will host the third and final game of the series on Sept. 5, 2020.

Anyone on here ever been to a sellout game at Rynearson?

Because they'd lose out if they paid $400k to get a MAC team to visit. Attendance is down, especially at the middling P5 stadiums and especially against paycheck opponents. In fact, it may even hurt season ticket sales to schedule a home game against a non quality P5 team. Why don't they just schedule a quality P5 team them? Easier said than done. None would waste a road game to Kentucky. The bluebloods are basically only scheduling each other and paycheck games at home. The current AD decided even Arkansas was so much a 'waste' of a home and home that he paid them $2 mil to cancel

When was the last time an SEC team came up and played at a Big Ten stadium?  Was it a few years back when Alabama came to Happy Valley?

I still am not used to Missouri in the SEC ---- but that was technically the last time an SEC school played at a B1G school's home venue.

(the last few words, of course, rule out LSU's game at Lambeau in September)

Vanderbilt also played at Northwestern in 2012.

Besides those two, the last time was Alabama's 2011 visit to Penn State.

I say they change the road signs and direct Kentucky to the Big House instead of EMU stadium and have them play our second string team in a doubleheader.

Our best friends in the neighborhood growing up were the sons of EMU professors, so my brother and I attended many games there growing up. However, what I distinctly remember was having more fun playing catch and 1 v 1 football during halftime because there are/were grassy areas outside the stands where you could comfortably toss a ball.

That being said, I lived in the Dallas area for a couple years and a lot of the High School stadiums there are essentially the equivalent of Rynearson, a few more impressive.

Hell I played D3 college ball in MN and played in a handfull of games with higher attendance than your average EMU home game.

*Funny EMU football sidenote, my dad was an adjunct professor there years ago that taught night classes, he happened to at one point both have Early Boykins and Charlie Batch as students. Charlie Batch once handed in a take home Essay Exam, the answers were A+ level matieral, the only problem was all his answers were for questions from the previous school year's exam... my dad changed up some questions.. HAHA.

Brian Tolbert was supposed to be in my speech class at EMU.  He did come by once; he gave a great speech about handling the basketball.  Like coaching-the-fundamentals great.

As for Rynearson, I constantly wish it had been built at half the size.  They've started to get smart about closing sections and putting graphic tarps over them, so the cameras don't see ten thousand empty seats.

At long last, my neighbor about three doors away can finally see his beloved Kentucky Wildcats and not have to drive all those hours to....no, wait, he's a (bandwagon-ish) Kentucky BASKETBALL fan, but a Michigan football fan. Apparently, that's a thing, although I am not sure how this is possible. Never mind. I won't let him know after all.

You know the Kentucky players are googling Ypsilanti and are going to get excited when they realize they'll get to see the Big House if they get 30 minutes of free time on the trip.

Funny EMU story.

Tom Wywrot(UM assistant AD for basketball) is an EMU alum and he came to a sports media relations class I was taking. This around 2001-02 when Amaker was at UM.

Anyways, he was taking questions and I asked him about Dominic Ingerson's issues. That annoyed him.

I don't remember any sellouts persay but I remember when I was in High School I was always able to get free tickets one way or another if I wanted.

To be honest I have pretty fond memories but I imagine a game at Rynearson is no longer similar to a Northwestern game but more similar to a High School game if mostly emo kids were given tickets.
