We started on Monday using broadcast game footage evaluating every time a head coach is on camera is the mask up?" Sankey said. "Yes or no? And if it's no, are they social distanced? And if you don't have that mask in place a super majority of the time that you're viewed, that puts you in jeopardy of a fine

Yeah, a couple things there Greg:

1. You just started now started reviewing broadcast footage on Monday for theses infractions?

2. WTF does "...super majority of the time...." mean?

Maybe it was Brian's Tennessee Cannoli title that spurred Sankey on....

I get your point, but I think what he’s saying with “super majority of the time” is it’s a judgement call. Is the coach noticeably, most of the time, wearing the mask when around officials, coaches, and players? The idea being that it’s not reasonable to have a zero tolerance policy. That’s be rather ridiculous. They’re human.

seen with a mask pulled down a couple times? Ok.
repeatedly  wearing it on your chin? Not ok.
screaming in the face of anyone with a mask off? No bueno.

I think having rigid numbers, as in trying to gauge the percentage of times seeing coach with or without a mask, is ridiculous. It’s not always easy to tell if a person is a certain distance away on a camera from distance.

I completely agree with your take - that its a visual perception over the course of the game on whether the coach is 'wearing' his mask most of the time.  I believe there is a place for this type of subjective review - aka: common sense opinion.  The problem with it is not the lack of statistics backing up the opinion, it is the lawyers that force everything into such statistical review.  'Common sense' is a largely dead concept when anything 'legal' is involved...

A super majority of the time means the standard is higher than 50% of the time. E.g. for an impeached president to be removed from office requires a supermajority of the Senate, since it requires two-thirds of Senators to vote for removal.

But since he didn't give an actual threshold, I would bet that they're just using more than 50%. That would mean that, if you're on camera 50 times, the mask has to be on at least 26 of those times.

It's interesting that the SEC, of all conferences, is the one to do this!  There are a few things that make this news relatively startling, which we can discuss with some broad-brush painting of assumptions (which are rarely any good).  I think its safe to say that the South (SE in particular), in a very general sense, is more adverse to mask wearing than most other large regions of the country.  The other oddity is that the SEC generally tends to not care about general public opinion.  But in this case, the SEC is both following public opinion that is trending more, every day, towards wearing a mask; AND leading conferences in active monitoring of 'rules'.

Good on the SEC!!!  Let's hope the B1G follows the leadership the SEC is showing in this case.

I've got a crazy idea, maybe these coaches could just leave their masks on for the duration of the game, rather than acting like they're 12.

Also, maybe we don't need the SEC perpetually pushing the boundary of how many people they can put in a stadium.
