Saturday Night Drinking and Hoops Watching Thread

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Apparently most of the board is on the wagon, drying their respective livers out as we went from near-daily drinking threads to zero.   It is a beautiful, snowy winter day up here.  Fire is lit and the BBQ is about to be lit, and some red pop about to be had.

Michigan's hoops forturnes could take a great turn tonight, or it might be one of those 'not in the face' type of games.

Peppers has a slim shot at the Heisman.

The drinking lamp is lit:  What is in your glass/cup?

We are having 19(!!!!) people over for a holiday party tonight. Drinks will consist of a few bottles of red and white wine for the adults, as well as a bottle of Macallen 12. I have 4 racks of ribs in the smoker, to go along with the feast that my wife has cooked up (Italian meatballs, Asian veggies, noodle pudding, home made pigs in blankets and potato knishes, 2 types of wings and too many desserts to list).

While I wait for the game to start, I've been slowly sipping a Mouton Cadet Bordeaux (not nearly as fancy as the name suggests - $9.99 at Meijer) and if time permits, we might break into the Dark Horse Merlot, which is also rather good. Considering that I'll be shoveling snow tomorrow, wine seems appropriate.

Here at the game so can't drink anything, yet, but happy to report Paulette Pavilion has a ton of maize and blue in it tonight. Michigan fans are putting in a good showing.

2016 Smooth Ambler limited edition 10 yr
2015 Thomas H Handy
2014 Green's store pick Smooth Ambler
2016 Pikesville
2016 Whistle Pig "Roast Beef" Binny's Pick

They're all delicious and to be honest in general I can't say that my palette ever tells me that one is necessarily better than another aside from something that just doesn't work for me. I didn't love the Whistle Pig, it was not in the same class. The Van Winkle is for sure the cleanest, smoothest but probably the least interesting and for how hard it is to get and what you'd have to pay to get a bottle of it, can't say I'd go out of my way to do so. The Handy and the Green's were probably the most interesting and best especially bang for the buck. The Smooth Ambler Limited was really, really good too, maybe neck and neck with the Handy for most interesting but same as the Van Winkle, for the expense and trouble finding, I'd take the regular store pick any day. The Pikesville seems like a pretty good everyday drinker, easy to find and reasonably priced but much lower on this list. Gonna make a Manhattan with it now and enjoy it. The Whistle Pig I probably wouldn't buy. I've really enjoyed some Russell's Reserve single barrel ryes and High West Rendezvous Ryes that I'd probably put up there ahead of the Pikesville.

I had some Handy this past week, along with Willett. Willett is fantastic, but Handy is truly in another league. Just amazing stuff.

Also, Smooth Ambler is vastly underrated. That 10 year is phenomenal. My wife got me a bottle of that for my birthday last year which, sadly, is gone.

I'm with ya man. I reorganized my bunker last night and I've got 38 bottles of Willett Family Reserve:). Whoops! Don't tell my wife. I've got at least that many Smooth Amblers bourbons but only a handful of ryes, I agree, it's been the best deal in bourbon for a while now and nobody seems to know about it. They just announced this week that their rye is totally gone. They also got purchased this week, hopefully that doesn't change things too much over there but you never know.

Yeah, I saw that. Also hoping that doesn't change things for them. Every Smooth Ambler I've had has been delicious. I keep looking for another bottle of the 10 year, but haven't found any yet. Until then I'll just slowly chip away at my collection of Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch. Cheers!
