Sam Webb: Michigan Targeting a Committed B1G QB

Submitted by KennyGfanLMAO on

In the most recent MGoVideo, Sam Webb reported that Michigan is looking for another quarterback for this class and is targeting a quarterback who is already commited to another B1G school. He said the player "doesn't want his name out there yet, but Michigan is all over him, and the player is certainly reciprocating the interest."

I figured since it has been a slow day so far on the blog, we could speculate on which quarterback Harbaugh and company are going after. One of the higher rated QB's committed to a B1G school is OSU commit, Torrance Gibson. Any chance he is the mystery player?

Discussion time!

And let's be honest, the run of UM Qbs was not all that impressive. Brady is a football God, but the rest were middling. Harbaugh some success, but he did bounce around the league. Griese, Grbac, Collins, Henne...none of these guys did much of anything in the NFL.

It may not be any of these, but a quick search of Rivals reveals some of the higher-ranked QBs currently committed to Big Ten teams, at least for 2015, include:

Brian Lewerke - Michigan State

Michael Dare - Rutgers

Elijah Sindelar - Purdue

Tommy Stevens - Penn State

Joe Burrow - Ohio State

Austin Kafentzis - Wisconsin

Those are some of the names at the top of the pro-style and dual-threat lists.

And in looking at him, it's very easy to see how they can pitch the "Andrew Luck" thing to him.

...sidenote, I'm kind of shocked no one has mentioned anything about losing Malzone or hurting his feelings or something. Then again, I haven't looked at the 2nd page.

If you're a QB recruit and Harbaugh comes calling, you're interested. Urban Meyer might run a great college system at Ohio State, but only one head coach in the country was a star qb in college, first round draft pick in the NFL, who played in the league for over a decade and has been successful as a college and a pro coach, not only in winning games, but moulding successful qbs. Don't forget, Urban's system might have gotten Alex smith to the NFL, but it's harbaugh who got him to succeed in the NFL. Plus, look what he did with Andrew Luck.

I just said they'd be interested.  Didn't say cakewalk.  I still stand by my statement.  Yes, winning national championships in college is a great thing.  Being successful at your NFL job after college is also a great thing. I think Harbaugh does a better job of preparing QBs for the NFL. He even had a QB at University of San Diego (Josh Johnson) drafted.  I think he's the only player ever drafted from USD.

For what it's worth, USD had three other players under Harbaugh make it into the NFL.  No one successful, but still damn impressive given the history of the school (only one other USD player made it into the NFL in the 60s).

I wouldn't be surprised if it's OSU's Joe Burrow (#12 dual-threat QB; ranked #379 in the country; from Athens, OH).  There has been talk that Burrow's family wasn't pleased with the Tim Beck hire at OSU, possibly because Beck was the Nebraska OC who showed little interest in Burrow.  Joe Burrow's dad and brothers apparently played for Nebraska.

Here's some information about it -----

FWIW, last March in my breakdown of 2015 quarterbacks, I ranked Brian Lewerke as the #7 guy (out of 20) that Michigan was supposedly showing interest in (LINK). EDIT: I'm not saying it's Lewerke, but he was brought up in this thread.

I'm surprised multiple people have gone through all the B1G teams and posted their commits (good work everyone...hope people scroll down to see it posted before wasting their time though)

At this point, we seem to have a feeling it's Burrow, you have anything on him?
