Sam Webb Believes Morris Starts Saturday?

Submitted by FreddieMercuryHayes on

Listening to WTKA during their MGoBlog roundtable segement, and unless I didn't hear him correctly, but Sam stated he believes UM goes with Morris (well, I believe he said 'the backup' I think) to start on Saturday.  Anybody else hear that, or am I just hearing things?  We all know Webb is really plugged into the program, so I somehow think this is unlikely to be a guess unless he's purposefully sandbagging or something.  Anyway, passing along some info for those not listening; the future is now I suppose.  And the future better start winning or the next few months are going to be, ah, trying.

To me, his injury is obvious.  You're entitled to your opinion but I think you're wrong.  Hell, DG played most of the 2nd half of the OSU with a freakin' broken foot and it didn't come out until after the game.

He rarely tucks it and runs?  Really?!?  The problem, as I see it, is that he is too quick to tuck and run and when he does he's not running with the same speed nor authority that he did.

So, don't buy it, but I think you're wrong.

I have Shane in class and he was studying the playbook as well as Minnesota's depth chart in class yesterday. I have had him in class every semester and this was the first time I have seen him do this. It might just be a conincidence but regardless if he starts or not I wish him the best of luck come Saturday.

Gardner isn't the problem.  I hate seeing a senior who has done so much and worked so hard have to pay for the politics of a coach trying to keep his job.  This offense has pretty much taken away one of Gardner's best assets: his mobility and ability to force the defense to "waste a man" covering him.

I hope the experience doesn't ruin Shane Morris.  It is all going to depend upon Minnesota's level of personnel.

I really don't know how anyone that has watched Michigan's offense this year say, "Garder isn't the problem."

Look, I love the kid as much as anyone, and respect him a great deal, but he's just not getting it done right now.  It has nothing to do with "politics" and everything to do with performance.

The offense hasn't taken away his mobility, his injuries have taken away his mobility.  Go back to the App St. game, the 2nd play of the game in which he and Green get mixed up -- he EASILY trots to the left and picks up the first down like he did early last year.  Now, go to the Miami game, or the Utah game and look at his runs (whether designed or scrambles).  Do you see the same guy?  I sure as hell don't.

Look at his throws early in the App. St. game, watch him step up into the pocket, his footwork.  Now look at him shot putting the ball versus Miami and Utah.  Something isn't right.

I am not sure how starting a football game is going to "ruin" Shane Morris -- he's been waiting for this his entire life.

Good lord the pessimism in here has become oppressive.  Give the kid a chance, he's earned the right and DG is obviously struggling.  People in here are acting like this is the first time in CFB history that a QB has struggled and the heir apparent comes in.  They've been saying that he's been pushing DG all season for the position, so is it THAT shocking?

Get a grip!

Gardner is totally the problem. If you run him, he gets hurt. If you force him to play as a drop back QB, he throws picks. It's lose, lose for everyone, including Gardner. He has ZERO chance of being a QB at the next level. Do the right thing and move him out to WR wear maybe he has a sliver of hope of making it in the NFL. As for politics, the political play would be just to leave Gardner in because he's a 5th year senior.

This was written about Devin a year ago, after the 2013 Notre Dame game:

The Irish likely will be among next year's opponents hoping Gardner doesn't return for his final season of eligibility.

It's just amazing how Devin's trajectory has changed so dramatically in a year. I have a hard time understanding it. In that game against Notre Dame last year he was absolutely brilliant (aside from the endzone interception). You had the sense watching it that he couldn't be stopped. That he was definitely going to convert on third down. He was a true dual-threat. I don't get why he's so ineffective now. His running threat has completely disappeared this season.

Well, at the very least, Devin has proven himself capable of being a very solid QB, and not just against cupcake teams. You can't simply forget about how well he played in the ND and OSU games last season. The potential should still be there.

However, it does seem pretty clear that DG is currently facing some mental obstacles which are really affecting his performance. IMO, what they really need to do is find the best sports psychologist there is, get him/her to Ann Arbor, and hope that person can somehow get Devin to regain his confidence and play with the mindset a QB needs.

2013 SEASON: Average Adjusted QBR: 61.4. Standard Deviation: 28.3.

High: 97.1 (Minny)

Low: 16.7 (Nebraska)

These numbers tell the tale. He does have some excellent games where he's dialed in, but the variability is crazy. I mean +/- 28.3!!! Basically, I agree he CAN be a good QB, but has yet to show any consistency. Being that he's a 5th year senior with ~8 games left (depdning on bowl), I think we bench him and get through the Morris Growing Pains this year rather than next.

For comparison, take Braxton Miller in 2013, including bowl game and B1G Championship:

Average Adjusted QBR: 79.4. Standard Deviation: 19.8

It feels like a reset.  The team badly needs one of those.  Hopefully they rally behind the kid.  First team practice reps can only help Shane.  It was pretty obvious that Gardner was never going to "get" it.  Michigan wasn't headed for the Rose Bowl, so why not build for the future?  I like the move regardless of Devin's health.  It also shows that the coaching staff cares more about the program(and the kids) than their jobs.  Because it could get worse before it gets better.

"It feels like a reset."

Yep, it sure does.

All we hear from Hoke & Co. and the players is, "competition, competition, competition" every snap of every practice and every game.  If things were as close going into the season as they say they were, it's obvious that DG beat out Shane, got his chance, and then lost it.

I assume that DG is highly respected by his teammates, but they're not blind.  They know he's not getting it done, and they see how his performance has cost them some opportunities to win.  I would expect the team to rally around Shane (if he does start) and hopefully he gives them the lift they've been needing.

Gardner may be in bad shape (injury, decision issues), but Brian is right. Morris is playing like he missed his senior H.S. season and has been carrying a clipboard around for 2 years. Now all of the sudden he's getting coached.

You know what that means. Look for some OMG fucking wonderful things to happen, and for plenty more Oh Why Lawd! goddawful things to happen.

That's the way it is. It's our lot in life. We Michigan fans were made to suffer.

Gardner may be injured and the staff is monitoring his recovery.  Morris has done nothing to distinguish himself in his garbage time appearances.

I cannot even read this board anymore without getting deepressed.  I read about how DG should and will be replaced by Morris and I shake my F'n head.  DG is not playing as well as he should and I am sure no one will deny that including Devin, but MFG (My Fucking GOD) the issue is not him.

So many talk about the ND game and seem to say, look at all his turnovers, he played terrible, kept giving the ball to the Irish.  Somewhat valid on its face but was I in an alternate universe?  When I watched, it was 21 - 0 at the end of the 1st half and DG and the Wolverines had not turned the ball over.  His first INT, which looked to me like Hill and DG read the defense differently, led to another 7 points but really after being down 21-0, I almost do not give a fuck, sling the dam ball around and dam the consequences.  21 pts - 2 qtrs to make it up, I cannot confirm this but I would think 95%+ of all teams would lose the game if they had 4 qtrs to make up a 21 point deficit let alone 2.  So acting like Devin lost the ND game is bullshit.

Against Miami (OH) not saying the throw was great, but his pic was tipped at the line then went through Chesson's hands, then was intercepted, it was not a "what the fuck" get him out play.  BTW, Michigan won by 24 pts.

Against Utah, the 2 pics - that sucked and on the 2nd I have no idea who DG was trying to throw to but is DG the real reason shit went to hell and now the sky is falling?

Now I know for the "We Need Morris" crew , against Miami (OH) DG also smacked the replay guy in the eye so he could not see that Darboh's knee touched while the ball was still in possession, and I know that DG also ran out there on the kick return team and called for the ball at the last second making for the fumbled kickoff too.

And For the "Morris Crew" I understand against Utah that DG probably told Funchess before his 1st throw that was picked, "Funch, if you do not catch this with only one hand, I will never throw to you again", I am pretty sure the "Morris gang" have evidence that DG told everyone he was going to be on the punt team then decided he did not want to cover punts (the other 10 players did not seem to want to cover it either), and I know the for "Team Morris" they probably have a video of DG at halftime telling Matti he would be DC but then realized after the Utes went down the field in like 3 plays for a score that he did not want to coordinate anymore.  I understand "Morris Klan", DG is the biggest issue and maybe the only one.  We can all agree "Put in Shane - get rid of the pain".

Now no doubt, his throw looked absolutely terrible on TV and he looked completely frustrated when running to the sideline to discuss what happened with Nuss, but I have to believe the frustration was there becasue of some mis-communication between himself and a receiver because there was not one in the area when shown on the set, and that has to be fixed, but bringing in Shane in is not the way to fix it.  I mean the pic when Shane came in and threw was no better, though a receiver was in the area, he had a defender in front of him and tightly behind, the only thing that could have hit the reciever was a magic bullet fired by Oswald.

Does Devin have to do better? - Yes.

Does Devin deserve better? - YES.

I like Shane and I hope he will do well when his time comes, that time should not be now though.  I have thought Hoke would right the ship from day 1, but if he starts Morris in my opinion he is no longer the man for the job for he does not realize the issues that are truly at hand, like so many others.

Then again maybe my depression due more to the things on this blog then anything else, has me in no mental state to have an opinion on anything.

No matter who is in there though -

"Morris Klan"?  If you're insinuating that there is a racial angle to this, that's pretty low.

Gardner isn't performing at the moment.  I suspect he isn't healthy, but whatever the case, the level of QB production we are getting is disastrous.  Whether Morris, with a week of preparation, can give us the spark we need to rectify things remains to be seen.  But you have to put sentimentality aside in any case.  When a team can't get into the opposing red zone once in two games against legitimate competition, the QB's job status absolutely should be in question.

For roughly 7 years, UM has been without a pro style QB.   Some of you younger posters may have forgot what it was to have a accurate passing QB.  Denard, bless his heart could not hit the broad side of a barn with a pass.  DG is slightly better but in his 15-16 games has not hit a reciever in stride or completed a deep ball in his UM career.   This system prevents him from using his skill sets, (Roll out passes and QB runs).   He is gone next year and will neither help himself or the team at QB.   The primary issue however you cut it is the QB position.  If your QB can't accurately pass, he will face 8-9 man fronts with mega blitzing.   Recievers can be single covered all day.   Your run game goes no where, three and outs are abundant and at some point your defense gets hyperextended.   MSU DC wrote the book on defending Michigan with DG.   KSU, ND, and Utah took notes.   Its comical to hear commentators complain about UM running woes.   8-9 man fronts, Linebackers and safety close enough to the line to get called for encroachment.  DG must be a fabulous teamate and Im sure he is a wonderful guy.  Degree in 3 years with probally 1-2 Masters degrees so far.  Oregon just showed the world MSU's defensive weakness.  Mariotta's accurate passes opened up that pressure defense with  pinpoint passing.   State had to totally back there safety's off and go to nickel packages.  DG will never get that respect.
