Rutgers to be predominantly remote learning in the fall

Hard to justify athletes competing if you don’t think your school is safe enough to have people in classrooms.
I know it’s rutgers, but this is a state that looks to have decent control of Covid 19 at the moment. It’s a big domino to fall
Not unlike their football team while playing on Saturday.
Alright! The troll cave is back on Firefox! Goodbye forever!!
Thanks for the heads up..,
First of all, Rutger. They have not earned back the "s" yet. Secondly, if we have to replace them with a MAC team it will do wonders for our strength of schedule so I am all for it!
What happened to the OP that was talking about MODS changing their post? Did anything come of that?
There's a moderator action sticky, it's mentioned in there.
Ah I see, thanks.
if a tree falls in a forest, and it was cut down with an 'axe', did it make a sound?
Spray or body wash? New Joisey wants to know...
Depends on The Situation.
I did it all for the snookie
What a turn-a-round! Schiano won't lose a game in his first season back!!!!!
This bit of depressing news from NJ may have contributed to the decision.
‘For the first time in 10 weeks, the rate of COVID-19 transmission in New Jersey has exceeded 1.0 — meaning that every new coronavirus case in the state is leading more than one additional infection.
The rate the virus is spreading from person to person now stands at 1.03, which Gov. Phil Murphy said is an early warning sign that residents need to do more to mitigate new cases. “
https://www.phillyvoice.com/new-jersey-covid-19-transmission-highest-level-since-april/
On a deaths per capita basis, NJ was the hardest hit state in the country. If they are seeing results like this even with their delayed opening that us not a good sign that there is anywhere in the US close to herd immunity. While it always seemed like a long shot, NJ and NYC were the most likely places to see evidence.
Their rate of new infections is lower than it has been since March. They have 300-500 daily cases compared to 3000-5000 most of April.
The denominator is much lower, so the R0 is prone to wild fluctuations now. That’s more likely to be a single errant point of statistical noise hovering around the new low-level than a significant change in the trend. Time will tell, but See chart in link
That would be good but:
1. i suspect that the governor is not making pronouncements based on statistical noise, but is rather looking at trends (that obviously could be wrong, but one would hope)
2. This suggests a 14 day rolling average of 0.98. 1.03 isn’t out of line with that.
https://covidactnow.org/us/nj?s=61890
That link says the 90% CI is between 0.87 and 1.07
so 1.03 is absolutely within the range of statistical noise
The 14 day rolling average is 0.98. The most recent single day value is 1.03. When it take those two things together, I’m likely to think that the we are more likely on the high side of 0.98 than the low side. Then I add in the fact that the governor (who is presumably privy to more and better data than you and I) is expressing concern. I consider that in light of the fact that the states largest public school (who presumably also has looked at some data) just announced 100% distance learning. I’m a pretty big fan of weight of evidence. That evidence all points me back to the conclusion that there is significant concern that NJ is not likely to be saved from a second wave by herd immunity.
This is the site I’ve been watching, they have it right at 1, so consistent. Looking at other states, is concerning. They have MI at 1.18 right now. Granted after the extended lockdown the denominator is lower.
I thought the article from insiders at Michigan said that the only way they could see a normal football season happening at Michigan was if the rest of the school was predominantly remote learning. I don't see this as necessarily a death sentence to the Rutgers football team.
As of this morning, remote learning is favored by 24 points over Rutger.
That sounds like a lot, but it's including a 3-point home field advantage
fire the cannon!
The Michael Spath article posted yesterday to the board did say 3-4 BIG schools would not play football this year. I guess Rutgers is likely one of them (no sarcasm intended).
And just Rutger luck that they happen to be on pace to pull in a top 20 recruiting class this year. What a blow that would be if they ended up not being able to have a season...long way to to go, yet.
Think this will be pretty common. Also with the recent news that ICE is requiring international students on student visas that are taking online classes have to self-deport Michigan and other team are going to have to figure out how to keep their international players in the country.
Going to be tough for guys like Franz and Julius to maintain eligibility from Germany
Hadn't thought about Franz; thanks for bring this up. It wasn't mentioned on WTKA this morning. What will Sam Webb say?
Not a "big domino". Harvard will be an online only school so Rutgers is following that model. It will be interesting to see what Michigan's football schedule will look like, not what is advertised at this time.
I know that quarantine is an opportunity to get valuable information. The sport continues to gain momentum and sporting events in colleges will continue. I recently read an article https://gradesfixer.com/free-essay-examples/life/ about a life position. This virus will help us become stronger and more pragmatic. Great educational and sporting events will be even more classy.
