Rumor: Harbaugh to be offered $8 million from UM

Submitted by SalvatoreQuattro on

Edit: The only reason I posted this is to start a discussion on potential compensation. I don't really believe that this ninny has any idea what UM may offer Harbaugh(if it even comes to that).

Edit 2: I deleted the link because the icky feeling I had when I first visited his blog came back with extra intensity. I don't want to give that schmuck anymore clicks than I already did.

There might be a slight component of pride that comes with a potential pay raise like this. Making more money than just about all the other people in the world that have the same profession would probably cause anyone's ego to swell a bit.

#1 - You seem to think that people can "have enough" money. You don't understand there's no such thing as "enough." Ever. For anyone.

#2 - Former NFL Quarterback, multi-millionaire, alpha male, at the pinnacle of his profession. Yeah... I think he can handle keeping his woman happy while he's achieving Demigod status.

First off, Jim H. is at 5 million in the NFL.  You must pay him more to pry him away.  So that means, at a minimum, you must pay >5 million.  So what is the ceiling?  One can look at Nick Saban who is at 7.2 million (and got an additional 3 million for his mortgage from boosters) for the ceiling, but that is assuming that Jim. H is a worse performer than Nick.  So that puts us at 5 million to 7.2 million as the range if the assumption that Jim H. is a worse performer is correct.

D'antonio makes 5.6 million and has 0 national championships and 2 conference championships.  Saban has 4 national championships and 5 conference championships.  Jim H. has 2 NFL Conference championships and 0 major college conference championships.  Nick Saban won less than 47% of his games as an NFL coach where Jim H. has won over 72%.  So while Jim H. arguably has not had the same level of success in college as Nick, Jim H. is way more sucessful at the NFL level and has shown the ability to be a great college coach at a previously laughable football program.

So while the argument that "he can't make more than Nick because he hasn't been as successful as NIck in college" is a valid argument,  one can also argue that he deserves more than Nick because he has proven more successful at a higher level and given the opportunity in a major football program, he will be just as successful or more in college.

So how does one reconcile this?  I think 8 million if incentive laden is probably spot on.

A compensation package of 6 million base + $500K for Big Ten Championship + $500 for a playoff appearance + $1 million for a National Championship may seem high, but a big bonus for performance is a good way for Michigan to hedge their bets (in case he doesn't win big), while being enough to lure Jim H. away from the NFL.  Let's face it, if he is as good as Nick, we will end up paying him Nick-like money anyways just to keep him.  It also makes the buyout really high which would serve to detract NFL teams from attempting to poach him after every successful year.   The high buyout will also serve as a dagger for those negative recruiters who will argue he is leaving to the NFL after every good season he has at Michigan.  And if he performs more like D'antonio, then he gets D'antonio-like money.  It is a win-win.  We do know if past performance is an indicator of future performance, that there is no way he has Hoke-like seasons ahead of him at Michigan.  He will either be more like D'antonio (almost always a contender for the Big Ten Championship) or more like Saban (almost always a contender for the National Championship).

Genius by Hackett if this is true.  Hackett gets my approval (not that he needs it) for the 8 mil/year if comp is tied heavily to performance.

Ann Arbor is not a lateral move for a guy's family who has called California home for approx 20 years.  San Francisco (49ers and Raiders) is one of the most amazing cities in the world.  If Michigan REALLY wants him, we need to make him the highest paid coach in football. $8M.

Our athletic department is still top 5 in revenue.  We can afford this.  If they don't offer him around $8M, then they really don't want him.

I'm not in the Pay the Players $$ camp, but who makes up the product on the field?  If college coaches are really going to start getting $8M/yr then I cannot fathom why a kid who is one injury away from never playing again...or worse...should be only getting "cost of attendance"

I'm also disturbed with AD's getting obscene pay packages for essentially shifting around piles of someone else's money.

However looking at it in Drucker terms* the players are probably at or near $100000k in terms of compensation so maybe $8M is fair?

*Drucker felt that fair compensation was 20x the lowest pay of the organization.  $8M/85 schollies/20=$94117.

I'll say it again

10 million a year 10 years

and in 2020 let's hear

"Today's attendence is 125,420, the largest crowd to ever watch a live football game anywhere in the world, and this is not a fluffed DB number!"

For FUCKS SAKE, DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET HARBAUGH.  How nice would it be to be EXCITED to go to the big house again? How awesome would that last game in november be next year, the tailgaiting atmosphere with all the asshole OSU fans finally ready for their 10 years of getting fisted once again?

Just the thought gives me goosebumps

pay him whatever it takes, don't even look anywhere else.

I mean, I could live with Les, but really wish we would have gotten him when he was younger. I would still take him as a coach that would be here for a few years to put a solid foundation of kicking some big ten ass down, but only if we can't get Jim.

Les loves Michigan more than Brady Hoke, and he has a fucking national championship ring. Say what you will, but that's enough for me. It should have went Lloyd>Les>Harbaugh, and we could have avoided needing group therapy. (And I liked RR, but can face the fact that the powers-that-be and the mouth-breathing morons who don't understand his system would have never let it work out, here. it was a waste.)
