Requesting scouting report on Jace Howard
I see that Jace Howard, Juwan Howard's son is a 2020 SF prospect. At 6'7" 200lbs, he's got decent size to play the 3 position. To anybody who is good at scouting (mattD or anybody else), what kind of prospect is Howard? Strengths and weaknesses? I'm assuming that Michigan will offer him at some point, but family connections aside, is he a Michigan/B1G level prospect?
Purely relaying just what I’ve heard and read, he is not a B1G level prospect. More mid major. But I’d have no problem with Juwan having him on the team.
FWIW he only shows 2 offers on 247 (Dayton and San Diego State). That should tell you all you need to know about the type of prospect he is heading into his senior year.
He picked up Northern Illinois and Saint Louis offers over the weekend as well fwiw.
If he wants to be a walk on, then so be it
If he wants to walk on, his dad can definitely afford the tuition. Why would you want to send your son to some shitty directional school when you can get him into Michigan?
I’m pretty sure my coaches kids were allowed to attend tuition free. But I’m trying to figure out how that worked with the scholarship numbers as it wouldn’t seem correct that a coach could get an extra scholarship by having his kid on the team for 4 years. Or in my coach’s case, 2 kids for 5 years each.
I don't believe Michigan offers discounted tuition for the children of employees. The Dearborn campus offers 25% off and full ride scholarships pay for a lot more than just tuition. Even if Juwan is willing to foot the bill, I could see Jace preferring to take a mid-major offer over being a walk on.
His dad made > $100M and will make a lot more money. The name on the degree is worth Michigan > Dayton.
UMhoops most recent article on Jace seems to suggest he will eventually end up at Michigan. Wouldn’t be a bad 4 year hustle and glue guy on a team that needs bodies.
He's solid, but very limited athletically. He'd be a good get for a mid major, and a bad fit for a power 5 conference. That being said, if he were a walk on at Michigan, he'd be a fantastic get.
The one you wanna keep an eye on is Jet Howard, his younger brother. I think he'll be a top 25 prospect in his class when its all said and done.
At the least, his name checks out.
Jace has a slow release, is limited athletically and has an average handle. Plays elite level competition on an elite team, but probably will not be a standout by any means. I expect lower level D1 schools to go for him.
You make it sound he'll be in the Maizen transfer portal for doomed 3 stars 3 years from now.
no, anyone that plays for university school will play college ball
From what I've seen of him, he's not a high major player. He lacks the athleticism to compete at our level. Jett on the other hand can be a big time player
Jett Howard is the good one. Plays on the USA teams for his age group
How awkward will it be for Coach Howard to recruit his son Jett to Michigan but not Jace lol
Somewhat off-topic, another son of Juwan is currently playing in the Ivy League at Brown:
Does he plan on grad transferring? Lol
I won't be mad if he ends up being part of a 6 man 2020 recruiting class. Cause at this point it's looking like thats what we are going to need.
How Do You Get To A Class of Six for 2020?
Unless the roster changes between now and the start of first semester, there will be a projected rotation of nine scholarship players (Simpson, Teske, Livers, Brooks, DeJulius, Johns, Castleton, Nunez and Bajema) plus one scholarship player (Davis) on the scout team for a total of ten out of a possible 13 scholarships.
Simpson and Teske will be gone after the 2019-20 season, leaving eight scholarship players out of a possible 13. Are you assuming that (a) Livers leaves for the pros after this season, or (b) that Davis either (i) accelerates his graduation date or (ii) enters the transfer portal after this season in order to find a place where he can get more playing time, or (c) that one of the other scholarship players with remaining eligibility decides to leave after this season?
Davis isn't accelerating, he's graduating after 4 years with a degree. He came in with Teske and Simpson. I'm not a Davis hater but it's unlikely a non starter gets a 5th year from a new head coach, considering Beilein probably wasn't going to give him one (the Donnal and Horford route). You just calculated a class of 5. Im figuring 6. It's not at all unrealistic.
Right you are. My mistake for not recalling that this will be the fourth year at Michigan for Austin Davis who'll have a year of eligibility as a graduate transfer after this season, should he decide to go for it.
Well, Jace can basically attend UM for free without taking up a scholarship since his dad works for the school. So, yes, sign him up! Scrappy, lunch pail, gym rat, coach's kid, who you'd be happy to see marry your daughter!
And, yes, I'm being perfectly serious. I'd love to see all the young Howards attend UM.
Is it written in to the Coaches contracts that their kids get free tuition?
All direct university employees--and I'm assuming this is true for Michigan--get tuition reimbursement for themselves and their children. So...no?
This is not true at all. At Michigan the children of faculty still have to pay full tuition.
Yeahhh, pretty sure that is not how that works. I work for the university and I know even tenured faculty get a 0% discount if their children come here. It could be something that gets written into his contract, but I would doubt it and expect that would make his kids ineligible to play varsity sports. You know, getting benefits that normal students cant get and all.
Yeah, but Howard isn't a faculty member. He's staff. This is UM's policy. It's legalize so I can't make out what it means. There is some form of tuition reimbursement. Not sure if it does cover children.
There is tuition reimbursement for employees who take classes, not their children. The policy is for staff including faculty.
There's nothing to stop Michigan from raising Howard's pay to offset the expense.
tuition to a guy like juwan is like lunch money for you and i. and even considering that, the son may want to play on scholarship for another school - kids that are very close to their parents nevertheless many times want to cut their own path .
Dad casts a LARGE shadow at Michigan, what with being a cult hero before even considering becoming coach. I wouldn't blame either of his kids for wanting to go somewhere else...
Lunch buffet, or off the menu?
considering their possible net worth, like the cost to us of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from home, splurging to buy a pop at lunch time.
Yeah, Michigan is stingy with that. My other alma mater gives full tuition for staff and faculty and their children. Maybe Howard could coach at UVM!
He does have the rare ability to dribble a ball and quote Shakespeare simultaneously.
