REMINDER: Last Week Of OT Season Is This Coming Week

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on August 19th, 2023 at 10:41 AM

This is a reminder to the board, and a heads up to anyone who happens to be new:

Per tradition, OT Season closes at midnight of the Saturday before the first game of the season, so your last opportunity to get a good OT thread going will be 11:59:59 PM on Friday, August 25th (at least if you want zero replies to said thread).

There will be some general guidelines forthcoming, as per usual. You know, the shit some of you hate and complain about. By now, it should be clear that your gripes fall on deaf ears, but feel free all the same. In any case, you'll see that post perhaps on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Get the question you've been dying to ask the board out of your head and into the virtual world soon, or you'll have to wait until early spring basically.

Unfortunately, tribalism in American politics is now advanced to a point where there is disagreement on what is in fact political in nature, which goes beyond, say, policy discussion being generally out of bounds. Because sports intersects with so many other points in society and culture, it's difficult to avoid at least giving that particular area a love tap, as it were, from time to time. As always, I guess everyone should remain vigilant and post in the stick or find a mod on social media as we're there as well.

Long story short, there are a lot of threads I don't read, and I am sure other mods could say the same thing, so if we don't see it, surely someone has and can speak up. Then again, that goes for a lot of things too, right down to people in the past who seemed to be hyperventilating through the Internet whenever we lost to a rival.

In the event that this was facetious, then forget everything I said. Everyone else will anyway.

No, I think that the first sentence is spot on. The rest of it, 'eh', lol. I actually think 'sport' supersedes politics, at least at the pro level. It is insane how politics has woven itself into almost all other aspects of 'Americana', though. I had never considered myself a Democrat or a Republican but as an American voting for the best candidate, knowing there has to be give and take. Now I find myself on one side because the other side, or at least those that stick out, are 'out there' beyond what I consider reasonable. I'm a laid-back guy too; I fear for our nation.

I don’t think there’s any real conceivable way we could go to war with China, at least not in a conventional manner. Maybe it could be like a Cold War of sorts. And I don’t think any of us are that stupid to start a nuclear war.

China (and Russia, and Iran and all of our known haters) know more than anything is that they don’t have to do much to bring this country to an end. We’ll end this country ourselves.  There isn’t a developed country in this world that hates its own people more than the US does. So all China has to do is stoke the flames of civil hatred among US citizens (through things like social media etc.) and wait it out.  China will pick up what’s left of the US in about 10-15 years with ease.

China isn't a European country, they don't see things the way they do, or we do for that matter. Being communist, they're a lot like Russia was back in the day, with still a lot of peasantry willing to do what they are told, either out of ignorance or fear. I have no doubts Xi Jinping is readying his nation to invade Taiwan, and is taking his sweet time doing it, knowing right now they stand little chance of capturing it with the troops, Navy, and Air Force they have right now, or whatever they call those military arms.

Why is Nick Saban the gold standard of coaches? Is it all the innovation and player development?

I know it can't be facilities window dressing or recruiting as that would be mentioned nationally based on years of correlation.

Smile? Hair style? Commercials?

Per national pundits it can't be anything about inducements or we would have stories about it and, you know, everybody does it.

I truly want to know how our vaunted programs have veered off back some 20 years ago so UM FB can right the ship?

"I truly want to know how our vaunted programs have veered off back some 20 years ago so UM FB can right the ship?"

I actually think you should enshrine this one in a thread. Seriously. This would be an interesting fan / alum interplay and I have thoughts on it myself. I think you would find a lot of complaints about the program having become increasingly resistant to even the mere suggestion of change whereas other teams were integrating all the latest trends in football because they, well, worked....really well, I might add.

You would also find that, in the early 2000s, the schism between the old guard "Leaders And Best Blah Blah" people and more progressive elements at the University, as well as among donors and more influential people, had begun to reach critical mass. That's my take in brief anyway.

I’ve always believed that the Bo worship amongst influential alumni was the single greatest thing holding us back. This got me negbanged in the past, but I’ll stick to my guns.

It reminds me of a Star Wars book. To be fair, most things do. This particular trilogy of books was written by Kevin J Anderson, so it’s…not well written…and, uhhh…a little Mary Sue… and it gave us Quantum Armor, which needs to go away…but the storyline is interesting.

The main antagonist (well, the corporeal one…) is Admiral Daala. She’s a protégé of Grand Moff Tarkin, he who oversaw (and died on) the first Death Star. Except Admiral Daala doesn’t know about that: she’s been basically in hiding, using a fleet of ships to protect a hidden research installation.

When she learns that the Empire has fallen, she invades the New Republic and attacks what she believes are strategic objectives. Except that her strategies and tactics are decades out of date. Her mentor, Tarkin, was a military innovator and his doctrine and strategy was critical to the Empire’s success. But that was a long time ago, and the New Republic’s Commander in Chief is particularly adept at countering those strategies.

So Admiral Daala, following Tarkin’s playbook and military doctrine, fails spectacularly…because everyone knows what’s coming. They’ve studied the strategy she’s using, and while her fleet is very powerful, it isn’t deployed for success.

Anyway, Michigan’s obsession with Bo led to similar disaster. We had the Star Destroyers, but not the strategy.

Almost as terrible as Kevin J Anderon's Jedi Academy trilogy was Darksaber, where Jabba's cousin hires the original Death Star engineer to make a spaceship that's essentially the Death Star superlaser with rocket thrusters which is doomed to fail because the contractors are a hive-mind alien race with ADHD, while Luke and his girlfriend just happen to crash land on Hoth and just happen to face the Wampa he (literally) disarmed in Ep V

Plus, the main reason Daala fails is because Luke's trainees channel Force telekinesis thru the brain of one of them to bounce Daala's fleet halfway across the galaxy.

Still slightly less inane than Ep IX, at least.

Ok, but Durga (not Jabba’s cousin - they’re from rival crime families) DOES have a history of being a colossal fuckup. The Han Solo trilogy is pretty good IMO, and basically everything Durga did in those books backfired.

The worst crime that Darksaber committed was killing Crix Madine.

Well, to be absolutely clear, I meant before the first Michigan game, which is September 2nd. The week prior to the game itself is usually a rush of roster or other team news, including the inevitable depth chart (which is a talking point, not the depth chart per se - standard qualifier here, of course).

For our astrophysics, do the boot strap mathematics  theory work out for our universe being in a black hole of another universe? Just think, every black hole in the center of our galaxies could contain a universe. A large black hole could reduce matter-atoms down to a singularity point of high energy particles, that explode to form a new Universe. May be our grandfather universe May have died ( lost all energy) eons ago.

Ok fine I’ll ask it. It’s 2064, and the water crises has finally pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. Your small band of survivors has fended off yet another attack on your tiny fortress around the last remaining natural spring that’s uncontaminated for at least 100 miles in any direction. You can choose one 1980s celebrity at his or her prime to help you defeat the rovers before they  finish you off. Who are you choosing and why? Go.

My only quibble would be that shitposting is probably good for overall morale when it arises from something unintentional or otherwise benign. For example, we have actually had people over the course of years get upset with things that, in fact, didn't happen - usually specific things in a game, like a play or a foul call.

The people who shitpost because they want to simply let someone or something that will never read this blog (e.g., a player, coach, staffer, etc...) have it, or because they want to share their feelings in some toxic way.....those people can get stuffed generally.
