Quinn Nordin Appreciation

Submitted by Remember_the_G… on November 19th, 2019 at 11:44 PM

Nordina was 3/3 against Sparty with a long of 49. Last week was his first made FG since Wisconsin LAST YEAR so more than a calendar year during which he missed 5 in a row and now he has four in a row. It was also his longest since he hit a 50 yarder in last year's B1G opener against Nebraska.

With so much going right on Saturday I feel like Nordin's performance did not get nearly enough credit with little to no mention in the podcast or Brian's game column and I feel like I haven't heard mention much at all. With all the ups and downs he's been through I'm not saying I am all the sudden super confident in him but I was definitely happy to see him do well.

Anyone else hear Harbaugh's comment that Nordin vowed to kick a 49 yard FG from the right hash during his recruitment in a win vs MSU?  True story and Harbaugh reminded Nordin of that right after the kick.

It sure seems like Harbaugh’s interaction with his players is positive, supportive, and loyal.  I get the impression as long as you put in the effort and do the right things, which I’m sure is significant, that are asked of you that Harbaugh has your back.

Nordin could easily have been cast aside when he faltered and Moody stepped up.  That didn’t happen.

It’s not everyday that’s the culture in a big time program.

Well it’s hard to justify transfer to yourself as “good enough to play somewhere else” when the truth is he just wasn’t performing well. It’s not like other positions where there may be some gray area and you think you’re good enough or maybe you’re just not quite good enough for this team but would be better elsewhere. He was missing FGs...a lot. It was poor performance, so transferring elsewhere would’ve been dicey at best.

I’m no kicking expert, but I do play golf. It looked line he wasn’t trying to kick the ball as hard as he possibly could and instead had a nice smooth consistent motion. Just my general observation. So maybe 55+ is not in the cards, but if he can look that smooth inside 50 that’s way more valuable.

What I noticed as a golfer is that he was playing a tight draw as opposed to the loose cut he had previously.  I hope it is something that they consciously worked on.  A tight draw would serve him well.  I know there is always a danger that a draw can turn into a hook, but man his kicks looked nice.  He can just start the ball at the right upright and let that little 5 yard draw turn in there.

That 49 yard FG was even more impressive since it was into the wind. He had a few misses in a row earlier in the year but we all have to remember that they were all really long attempts. He made the first 60 yard attempt against Iowa but they called a timeout out. He missed the 2nd attempt but it was right down the middle but about a yard short. He has a very strong leg. When his mechanics are right he is a deadly weapon on the team. Kudos to him for sticking it out.

His confidence is definitely growing and he’s striking the ball well. Hope he keeps it going with his strong leg he can be another huge weapon for us

Let’s not forget he was the “3 wood” and was only used when outside of 45. That probably had something to do with low percentage.

Good that he seems to have turned it around but kicking is so wish washy who knows.

kid has a hell of a leg and has calmed the “Wild Thing” antics down which is good.

Kicking is all about confidence from momentum and he is gaining it back at the right time.

I love his fire. We will need him just like he is now for the next few weeks. Posbang Quinn!

Just remember Quinn, that if the OSU game comes down to a 60 yard field goal to be made by you, that we'll love you as a Michigan brother no matter the outcome. (You'd become legendary if you made it though so DON'T FUCK IT UP!)

Agreed.  There were many things that made me think this team is improved across-the-board since September, but having a kicker who is automatic inside 50 makes a HUGE difference.  And though they didn't "need" him to hit one for the W, we might soon.  Hoping he has his mechanics AND is confidence back.
