Question re Jeremy Jackson's schollie
In different forum posts and today's recruiting roundup, it has been mentioned or suggested that Jeremy Jackson might not receive a scholarship and his dad may just receive a raise equivalent to his tuition. Question (I'm sure I could research it but finals are coming up): Does M not allow for tuition remission for children of their staff. I have a friend who went to NYU for free because his father works there - is there not a similar deal at M?

Nope. Michigan milks every penny.

I believe it was I who raised that point. To be clear, I was using it as an example. In my opinion, no recruit should be asked to pay for even a semester of his tuition, unless he was aware of the circumstances during the recruiting process.

UM needs money. Alot of it. Public funding through state hasn't been too kind since the state economy is in the dumps. Can't believe out of state tuition is $40K a year now; that's $10K more than what I was paying back in early this decade. Crazy how much tuition has spiked.

Wow. I wasn't aware tuition was so high for out of state students. I don't pay nearly that much for the private college I'm at...

With the cost of everything (textbooks/supplies, airfare, food, etc...), OOS will end of costing me a lot closer to 50k a year...even with a 2k scholarship. It's ridiculous. Add to that my dual enrollment (5 years) and my parents are about to shoot me instead.

For just tuition (no room and board) it cost about $4k/yr for in-state students and $9K/yr for out-of-state students. Tuition cost have absolutely gone through the roof....

Since Jackson won't be coaching here this argument is moot

Where did you get word that he wouldn't be coaching here? I don't believe that's been finalized, and in fact, I think it's been noted otherwise....correct me if i'm wrong, though...since you seem pretty strongly behind your statement

Jackson, Michigan's longest tenured assistant, said he plans to return for a 19th season. His son, Jeremy Jackson, has given the Wolverines a non-binding verbal commitment and plans to enroll in January.

Jeremy Jackson is kind of slow. I really don't expect much from him. This sounds bad, but if his dad didn't coach at UM, I kind of doubt if he'd have received an offer from UM.

Despite his lack of speed, I think he could thrive here. It seems that Rich Rod values blocking in his outside recievers more than speed (see Latarryl Savoy starting over Stonum on and off throughout the season).
I've seen him play twice and I thought that he excelled in that regard (he even lines up as a tight end at times and handles most DE's and OLB's he goes up against).
I also think that he could be a great red-zone threat, as he has great hands and knows how to use his size to get open against smaller corners.
There's also a chance that he could put on 20-30lbs and become a solid tight end as well. He's big and strong (listed at 6-3, 195), and having a coach as a father, should have a great work ethic as well.
*I believe that he recieved his initial offer from Lloyd, and Rich Rod merely honored it.

No offense, but using Savoy as an example doesn't exactly instill a ton of confidence. I know you're not saying they're the exact same player in every respect, but still...
Also, Lloyd couldn't have offered Jeremy Jackson officially. Jackson couldn't have received his offer until September 1, 2008, which was obviously about 9 months after Lloyd had departed.

I think that we are both more or less in agreement about Jackson's lack of "star" potential. I don't think that he's going to be much more than an average "reciever" (if that). But because I've seen Rich Rod go with blocking over speed at outside reciever (on one occassion, at least), I think that he might have a chance to be a starter in our offense at some point. Most coaches would look at his speed, give him a tight end's number, and tell him to put on some weight, but Rich Rod isn't most coaches.
*I think that the source of that Lloyd/Jackson thing was another message board, so I'm not surprised that it wasn't true.

I thought that I heard that he might be coming in as a TE. If that's the case, he might fit into the Koger mold pretty well.
