Question for people upset with the FYS cheer

Submitted by ShockFX on
Would it have been ok if they had chanted "Screw you State"?

I know this is sort of irrelevant, but I went to games throughout my childhood, and I never knew that the C-Ya chant (or any chant, for that matter) was vulgar in the least. I couldn't understand anything they were saying. Although it was more obvious what they were saying the other night, I suppose.

for the moment.. And anyone that feels that it was too strong obviously doesn't give a damn for Kampfers well being... (most of these people are state fans)

Screw you State is still a way of putting down your opponent. When we are winning, we should be gracious winners and say things like "Good luck next time State" or "You sure were a challenging opponent State" It really frustrates me that people have to insult their opponents, especially when all of our opponents are so drastically inferior.

seriously... Were you that guy who thought that it was cool to start up the "hey montoya you're not a goalie you're a messiah... you're not a messiah you just save you just save you just save you just save" or the "hey tambolini you're not a forward you're a player you're not a player you're a casanova you're not a casanova you just score you just score" etc.. Cheers aren't fun unless they are demoralizing to your opponent lol

i for one agree. michigan and the ccha should not be about bringing people down. when conboy punches someone in the back of the head we should say "hey man, way to stick up for your teammate" or when tropp golfswings an unconscious player we should say "nice slash man, you're really improving your dirty play". we can all learn something from alex defilippo today

of all the times to yell fuck, that was the time. seriously, complain when we call ferris' 4th string center a cock sucker. or when we call UNO's girlfriends slutty. FYS was appropriate

I sometimes come on here to deride our program and say we have a shitty game. I certainly come on here to scream at the "fans" who start the wave (or whatever the shit that WOOP WOOP! is). During the game I yell at fans who have no idea what a real penalty is and therefore call out the refs for being idiots, when it is in fact the fans who are idiots. HOWEVER Fuck You State was by far the most appropriate response I have ever heard from my 5 years of being a part of the student section at Yost. It was clear, it was concise, and it was warranted. I commend the men and women of the student section for voicing their opinion in a way that was well rounded and heard by all. It makes me proud to be a part of the student section for my final months here at Michigan.

yost is awesome. don't change anything. after going there as a kid, and again as a student, nothing really has changed over the last 10 years (a couple of renovations). but overall i love how the old place hasn't changed.

I'll be the first to say it. I'll also be the first to say "think of the children." Listen, I've done it before, so I cast no stone. I probably would have been yelling FYS with everyone if I were at Yost due to the situation, but it wouldn't have been the right thing to do. I agree with Brian's take on cursing at the games from his post for the most part. I would just add that because something is the natural response, which yelling FYS would definately be a natural response to that sort of dirty hockey, it's not necessarily the right response. And think of the children.

How in the world did we get to this? The actual character string is what is offensive rather than the meaning? Screw You Frack You You're a Freaking Idiot It's A Cluster etc. They all mean exactly the same thing. But those kids everyone is worried about go around all day saying Freakin this and Freakin that. BTW, is the vulgarity scale linear or logarithmic?
