question about student section

Submitted by sheepman on

So, I got my student tickets.

Last year, I was on the 20 yard line in row 15 - amazing seats. That was the 4th year of doc studies, so I had pretty high status as far as getting the seats.

This year, I am in section 31 - row 6. That is right in the corner of student section almost on the field. My friend said these are higher priority tickets because that is right in the hotspot of the action (tv cams, craziness, and so on).

I went to my seat on fanday, and the view was not nearly as good. Has anyone sat in that corner right down by the field? How is it? Is it worth sacrificing some view for the position?

Sitting in the student section is an experience in and of itself. Way more energy and randomness in there.

I'm also wondering this. I haven't gotten mine yet though.

Sidenote: if my seats are terrible (my girlfriend is in row 76 as a senior, and she's pretty pissed), I will irrationally be angry/bitter at you because there are so many students with higher priority even though I'm a senior. However, still happy for you since you're an MGoUser and not just going to socialize.

I've heard the closer rows aren't good unless you're in the first couple or a non-corner section. You can probably squeeze down but I bet it gets really packed and that would make me mad probably. I would honestly prefer my sightlines last year (section 28-29, ~row 40?) rather than about row 15 in 31.

That's kind of weird.  I'm also a doctoral student, and have been in both of those positions.  My first year at Michigan, I was in Section 31, row 1 (yes, my first year).  Now, the cool part is that you see the game at eye-level, like the coaches do.  Bad thing is that you have no perspective when the ball isn't within 20 yards of the close endzone.  It is cool to have the players come right up next to you when they score, when they sing the Victors, etc.  You also have a good chance to be on TV. (In fact, you can also SEE what they are broadcasting on TV by peering at the TV camera and see what they are panning to).

However, I'm now with a lot of students who've amassed hundreds of credits at UM, and we have seats in Section 25 (the closest student section to midfield) and rows somewhere between 4 and 20.  I like these seats a lot more because you can see more of the field, and you get a pretty good sightline of spacing, open receivers, etc.  In fact, one year we requested to move BACK from row 7 to row 20-ish, in order to get the better view.

Anyways, if I had to choose, I'd pick section 25, and I find it really weird that you got placed in the same section that I was placed when I had 0 UM credits.

This year will be better than any other year to be semi-close, because gigantic scoreboards will now make it way easier to see the action on when the ball is on the opposite end. So I'd be okay with where the OP is at.

How the heck did you get those seats your first year?

I don't know how I got them my first year -- I guess I was just lucky.  And I didn't sign up for it as an individual -- I joined the "Rackham" seating group (which was reserved for new students who didn't know anyone yet).  And there were A LOT of us new students down there, starting in Row A.  Mind you this was 2008, so maybe there wasn't a lot of demand for RR's first year?

I agree, so very strange. Your first year you were here? My first year of doc studies I was in total nosebleed section. And the last three years I have gotten lower and closer to mid-field. then they spring this on me.

This year I wanted to be in Section 25 again - like row 2. Oh well, it will be a whole different experience I guess.

I think a lot of it depends on if you ordered your tickets with a group or not, and how big your group size is. With a group, I believe they go by the number of credits/priority points the lowest member of your group has. My sohpmore, i got the tickets with like 4 friends, and we were in row 53, then my junior year, i was with a much larger group of friends (15 or so) and we ended up in row 68. Also, I believe if you order just a single ticket with no group, you could get lucky and get a filler seat in the lower rows.

In my experience, i liked being around rows 30-40 the best for the view, but it's just as much fun when you're lower cuase you're so close to the action, but have to trade off on the view when the ball is on the other side of the field.

And another point since you're in a low row -- make sure to make friends with the students next to you, one row below you, one row behind you during the first game.  Then, when tons of students try to jam your rows and move closer and closer during games that are more popular, you can all have each others' backs.

Last year I was Sec. 29, row 41, and about the same spot the year before. I loved it. You are right behind the band, so you can hear them well and even follow the conductor during the Victors (so you don't get a beat ahead like the rest of the students section...). Also, the view of the field is great--you are right on the goalline, and high enough to see the whole field, except for the far sideline and endzone. No seat is going to be perfect, especially in the student section, but I think yours are about as good as they come.

I'm moving down this year to row 17, and I'm excited, but sad that I will miss the perspective of being higher up. Hopefully the new video boards help.

I would be super-pissed if I were you.  One of my favorite things about the beginning of each season in college was getting to see my seats move closer and closer to mid-field.  First in Section 31, then 28, then 27, then 25.  I'd be livid if I got put back in 31 (not that just going to the games isn't outstanding, but those seats are not nearly as good as you had last year!).

Understand that row 6 is not really the sixth row. I think there are three rows maybe two in front of row 1. Also, if any students think they have been given incorrect seating priority, contact the ticket office as they'll be able to provide you with information with regards to what class priority you were given. They mistakenly gave my group freshman priority instead of senior, and thus I have been talking to them for days and am curious as to who else has seen similar issues.

I agree with this. Some people I know got royally screwed -- they were in a group of students that have been at UM for 7+ years (undergrad plus grad school), but got placed in a bad spot.  They emailed the ticket office and copied Bill Martin (or DB, I can't remember who was the AD then), and they apologized.  They could not change the tickets for that year (as obviously all had already been assigned), but said that if those students "reminded" them the next year that they were previously screwed, they would personally place them in baller student section seats.  It worked -- they got Section 25, Lower Row seats the next year!

I suppose, in all things - going to the games is more about the atmosphere rather than watching the games, right?

I will just DVR them and watch them twelve times later - and have a great time while I am there in the sespool of fun.

I feel better about my seats.

Last year my seat was exactly in section 31 row 6. It's incredibly awesome when the action is happening around the north endzone. But you are so close to the field that it's very difficult to see what is happening on the other end. Plus there were a ton of undergrads (frat/sorority types mostly) where I was sitting - as a doctoral student myself, their drunken antics can distract from watching the game, as I'm sure you know. It is true that the TV cameras will often pan around that area, plus the wave sometimes starts there too, but I don't really regard those as plusses.

I had 31, row 5 for my senior year.  The only time it sucked was for plays at the opposite end that ran to the left.  If you know football enough to be able to tell how many yards a run gets with no depth perception, its ok though.  You kind of just see a pile of bodies develop and you tell by how the players move how far "down" the field it went.

Tickets are with a group of students who are in grad school and have 4 years worth of undergrad credits as well.

Was not expecting this.

Yeah sometimes it seems like they are just randomly throwing groups onto a seating chart and seeing where they stick. Freshmen in row 20? LEAVE IT. Students who have logged 150+ credits here got stuck in row 90? SOUNDS GOOD.

Though I'm just a junior undergrad I was surprised to be put in row 93. Now I have to squeeze into a space next to my parents season tickets spot which is in row 24 on the opposite side of the stadium. Luckily I enjoy watching football sober or else that would have been a problem.

Please call the ticket office and ask to be transferred to Steve Lambright. Leave a message with him, question why you got such a seating location. Shoot [email protected] an email asking a similar thing. They need to realize how often their seating groups are screwed up. Most likely one of your seatmates was mistakenly given freshman status for some unknown reason, generally because the registrar's office gave them incorrect credit information.

You don't happen to be in the low 20s seat do you? My group is 20 - 25.

That would be sweet to have a fellow Mgoblogger right near me. And hopefully you are pretty cool so if you meet my wife (she is coming to a couple games with me down there) she can stop calling me a loser for being on mgoblog so much. :)

If you wanted the best view you wouldn't go to the game. Going to the game is for the atmosphere and where you are is the best in the house. I wouldn't complain.

of section 28, right next to the band.  Were great seats for the most part, sometimes a little hard to see what it's cool being so close.  I also was on the long part of the rectangle of the stadium though, so that helped with perception.

Anyone remember when sitting in your actual seats was frowned upon?  Back in my day, it was essentially "first come, first serve" seating.  The only people that tried to enforce their ticket seats were old people and they were so ostracized that many of them left before the game's end.  That is the best way for student seating to be handled.  It rewards the die-hard fans and makes sure the students show up early (or at least a lot earlier than they do now!).

I still haven't received my student tickets after checking the mail today. Anyone else in the same boat as me? Im hoping they come in tomorrow so I dont freak out.

My tickets were 6th row student section a couple years ago. The people sitting down there were mostly uptight nerds, but it was still a good time. There's definitely some view sacrificed on the far side of the stadium, but I imagine it will be much easier to handle with the new video screens.

I've gone to about a dozen games in the past where I sat in Section 33, Row 1.  (Technically the 3rd row since the first two are A & B.)  You're pretty close to where I have been.  End zone seats aren't ideal with the exception of field goals but sitting that close really makes up for it.

I did sit in a corner once for the 2005 Penn State game (Henne to Manningham).  They were in section 37, Row 13.  I had no complaints about the view.  Although I couldn't see Manningham catch the ball on the last play.  I had to watch the crowd's reaction to know what happened. I might have been able to tell what was happening easier had I not been so paranoid on the final play.

This is my first year with tickets and I'm in section 31 row 21.   I have a feeling that I won't be close very close to the field and won't see anything on the other half of the field.  Are my assumptions correct?
