Question about Jabrill Peppers' career

Submitted by GoBlue419 on August 11th, 2019 at 8:01 PM

This is my 1st post. I've mentioned this many times among non-Michigan fans and casual football fans, but now that I can MGoPost (lol), I've always wanted some opinions from people who actually watch Michigan as thoroughly as I do.

I have always felt that Jabrill Peppers would've been (and currently would be) better utilized as a full time Running Back. To me it always seemed like he made (or could've made) more game changing plays with the ball in his hands than he ever did defensively. His skill set and abilities just fit RB more than S, imo.

His career offensive #s at UM overall weren't incredible (45car 239yds 5.3ypc, 10rec 82yds, 5 rush TDs) but alot of those touches were gadget/gimmicky plays and even so, he had some big plays offensively. We all saw how amazing he was in the return game. I would've loved to see what he could've done with 20 carries a game. Am I wrong for thinking he definitely could've out-produced Deveon Smith(who I love as a player, but still).

I absolutely loved Peppers at UM, but at the end of the day his Michigan career will always be disappointing in my view.

Anyone care to discuss this while we wait for the season to kickoff?

I 100% agree he was electric

reminded me of a bigger Percy Harvin. He was a great of D obviously but thought the upside in offense was much greater. However, we will never know as hindsight is 20/20 all I know is he was a joy to watch wherever he played at Michigan.

I agree. Watching some of those wildcat plays showed a bit of what Jabril could do with a running start. He has both real speed and football speed, just a way of accelerating past guys closing in. Makes you wonder what would have happened if the mantra of "speed in space" was the philosophy when he was here.

Not to be rude, it’s clear you have no idea of football, I’ll suck it up and be the guy to entertain this nonsense. For years and years and years even back to the Carr level Michigan would get destroyed on the outside, The Coaching staff used Peppers in a way that he set the edge on almost every single play, and he did it so well. Peppers taking an unselfish roll which took away from his stats allowed Michigan’s defense to become elite. Same with Gary if you don’t see it on the tape then idk what to tell you, soon in Green Bay you’ll see Gary be unleashed and his talents will show case.

Here we go with the "set the edge" stuff lol. Same excuses are used for Gary. Hudson plays the same position and out-produced Peppers defensively in 2017 (yes I'm aware of the #s against Minn but Peppers never put up those #s while playing that position). Stop making excuses for guys who don't get it done when it's time to get it done(eg. Curtis Samuel 3rd down run).

But yea let's just go with "you don't know football" lol.

Peppers was the all-around MVP of that '16 team. He had his fingerprints on all aspects: Defensively, Special Teams, Offense, Media, Style, Leadership. He really doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Revealed a lot to me that the backups to his positions were freshmen. He gave it all he had that season. The Heisman committee recognized it also, as it's assuredly doubtful he got there just based off of his excellent punt returning.

I agree. Jack of all trades. My post was made to argue that he would've been better off as a fulltime running back, retaining pr duties as well, obviously. Maybe the team wouldn't have been though? But with the way Khaleke has outperformed him at Viper, it sure looks like UM could've used Peppers' explosiveness more on offense.
