Puff piece on JJ McCarthy's shoulder recovery (maybe $)

Submitted by Blue Vet on June 27th, 2022 at 10:19 AM

An article by Austin Meek in The Athletic about JJ McCarthy getting help from Tom House, the throwing guru who's worked with Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Nolan Ryan, etc.

It may be paywalled. I can open the attached link but that may be because I get The Athletic through the NY Times.

Essentially, the article combines 3 threads,

1) McCarthy constantly practicing and working, including throwing after games;

2) his work with House, including cutting back on his throwing to ensure his recovery is solid, and

3) a discussion of House's approach, which combines biomechanics, strength, nutrition, and "mental management."

I think each one of the doctors under House had their own favorite "it's this!" disease.  My wife and I binged watched House recently and we could really see the redundancy.

The last episode - where the actors got together and reminisced - was cool when Dr. House "started" talking with a British accent.  I knew he had the accent (Monsters vs Aliens!), but it caught me off guard hearing him through all the episodes.

"No detail is too small, down to the temperature of the athlete’s bedroom at night, the pH level of their water or the ratio of complex carbohydrates to proteins in their diet." Sounds a little psuedo-sciency but hope it works.

People laugh at Brady for his TB12 diet, how strictly regimented it is, how just completely restrictive it is on a ton of different foods. But hey, the man is still throwing for 5,000 yards and is just shy of turning 45. Pretty much every other NFL QB's body starts to give out on them by the time they hit 40.

Crazy or not, whatever he's doing is working. So why mess with what works? Especially if you're still a favorite to get your eighth ring.

Survivorship bias at its finest imo.

Tom Brady's diet is ridiculous and not at all responsible for his success. Well, in some ways it is - he's not exactly eating fried chicken and donuts all day long. So in the big picture, eating all organic, avoiding processed foods, eating lots of veggies etc is obviously very good.

But a lot of his stuff is psuedoscience bs. No tomatoes because they cause inflammation? Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, which is an antioxidant

No iodized salt, instead using himalayan pink salt? Cmon now

Eating "alkaline foods" to harmonize his body? Bunk.

The traits that LED him to obsess over his weird diet (insanely competitive, obsessive, detail oriented) are why he's the goat. Plus a good bit of luck and good genes obviously

Yeah, I don't claim to know what makes for good throwing mechanics, etc., but Tom House has been around forever, and he doesn't have a great reputation over in the baseball world. Most famously, he proclaimed Mark Prior to have "perfect mechanics", a claim that didn't age well.

It appears to only be a 10 ft. paywall. A 12 ft ladder will suffice: https://12ft.io/ Scroll down to the "What," "Why," and "How does it work?" sections if you want to learn more. There are also browser extensions out there that will do it for you automatically.

Premium content is premium content, like recruiting sites or ESPN+ for example. I can respect that. These other sites want to have their cake and eat it too. Fuck em.

A couple MGoPoints to you for pointing out to an old idiot that I can sign up for The Athletic through my Times subscription.  Thank you, sir!

Does the NY Times subscription also get The Athletic?  My understanding was that was not the case as it was still totally separate?

Update - yes just confirmed it is included, thanks for posting
