PSU OC Change

Kirk Ciarrocca, hired last year from Minnesota, is out after a year in favor of Mike Yurcich, who’d been at Texas and let go as part of the firing of Herman’s staff. Yurcich had been QB coach at Ohio State previously.

It's a strange move. Kirk Ciarrocca was celebrated as one of the great young minds in college football.

Everyone got thrown a COVID curve. PSU lost it's top 3 running backs.

As we saw here. with Gattis, it takes a few games to get things going under a new OC. PSU won it's last 4 games and they weren't close.

This suggests he is the sacrificial lamb, or the more likely, there something else is going on here.

I don't think this is entirely fair to Kirk Ciarrocca.  It was only one year, where there were A LOT of unique factors (COVID, losing the various running backs).

As someone else said, PSU did also noticeably improve as the season went on.  That should be worth something.

One thing that is for certain: Franklin has had a lot of offensive coordinators.  The next one will be #5 (in the 8th year) at PSU under Franklin!  John Donovan, Moorhead, Ricky Rahne, Ciarrocca, and the next one.

On a tangent, I feel bad for Rahne for other reasons.  He deservedly got the ODU head coach offer in December 2019.  He took it --- leading the way for Ciarrocca at PSU --- but then ODU was one of only 3 FBS schools not to play in 2020.  Hoping that Rahne gets his chance in 2021.

Great hire, IMO.  Yurcich killed it OSU (ntOSU) and will help restore the deep passing attack in Happy Valley.

I hope we add some similar firepower to our offensive staff.
