Projected 2009 depth chart

Submitted by mhwaldm on

So in order to keep myself from going into a constant fit of rage, Iv decided to set my sights on next year, with hopes for a serious turn around. Iv been trying to compile a projected depth chart for next year, based on players expected to leave, current redshirts, incoming freshman, and returning players. In regards to recruitment, I tried to include the players that are currently committed or are strongly expected to commit. Heres what i got:

Offesne:

QB - Threet

     - Forcier - I expect him to take over the starting role by week 3 or 4

     - Beaver - redshirt

RB - McGuffie

     - Minor

     - Shaw

     - Brown

     - Toussaint - redshirt

Outside WR1 - Matthews

                   - Stonum

Outside WR2 - Hemingway

                   - Stonum

Slot - Odoms

      - Terrence Robinson

TE - Koger

    - Brandon Moore

LT - Dan Oneal

    - Huyge

    - Mealer

LG - Barnum

C - Molk

RG - Wermers

RT - Schilling

    - Dorrestein

    - Koury

Defense:

DE -  Graham (plzzzz!)

     - Lalota

DT - Martin

DT - Sagesse

DT - Van Bergen

    - Roh - redshirt

    - Greg Banks

OLB - Fitzgerald

       - Demens

MLB - Ezeh

OLB - Mouton

       - Marell Evans

CB - Warren

     - Dutch

S - Brown

   - Brandon Smith

    - JT Floyd - redshirt

S - Mike Williams

   - JT Turner

    - Bell - redshirt

CB - Cissoko

    - Dutch

Unless the redshirting O-linemen are sick, im not extremely optimistic. It would be very nice to grab another good OT (Washington, Travis Bond, Chris Freeman). Also if we get Will Campbell back, its interesting to see what they do with him. It would have been nice to still have McNeal committed. Hopefully Stonum and Matthews can hold us over until 2010 when we get jeremy jackson and miller.

Beaver will not redshirt, IMO.  Also, I expect to see Jeremy Gallon in there at the slot as well.  You left out Toney Clemens, but you have Stonum twice, I assume Toney would be in place of one of the Stonums.

JT Floyd will not be redshirting this year, I believe he's doing that this year.  And I would expect LaLota to redshirt before Roh, since LaLota has only played football for a year so far.  Why not DeQuinta Jones?

Those are the only things I would change.

I don't expect to see Clemens on the field at all next year.  LaLota is more likely to play than Roh as Roh weighs 230lbs and might be a bit small to play next year.

DeQuinta Jones' commit is a bit shaky or something.

I expect to see Stonum ahead of Hemingway and even possibly ahead of Matthews by this time next year.

We could potentially see 2x slot recievers on plays next year.  I don't think RR has ever had 2 quality slot guys available to him at once.  Fake bubble screens anyone?

I'm interested to see why you don't think Toney Clemens will see the field next year.  Assuming McNeal doesn't come here, that leaves us with 3 WR's for 2 spots.  I think we would go deeper than that.  I expect one of those guys to miss some time due to injury (happens a lot with receivers since a small injury really affects there play), and that would mean just the two starters.  It sounds like you have more info than I do, I just want to know what you know that I don't.

I think Zirbel would be a lock to start - pretty much everyone thought he was our best lineman going into the year.

Well if we aren't starting true freshman this year over the current starters, what makes you think we would want to next year?  O-line sees fewer true freshman than any other position, so even if LaLota or Will Campbell switched to offense, I seriously doubt they would start.  They may provide depth, but remember we are returning our entire 2-deep on offense, whereas we may have serious gaps in our 2-deep on the d-line next year without those 2 guys.

Also, a big reason our O-line is bad is because they are young and/or inexperienced.  Next year they won't be, but you want to replace them with guys who are younger and less experienced?

I don't want to do anything. I'm just asking questions.

But they didn't have any five star offensive linemen enrolling early in the 2008 class either. We also don't know how good the 2008 o-line recruits are looking so far, or how many more o-line or d-line they'll sign in 2009.

That's true, but I don't know if Will Campbell would be rated as a 5-star O lineman just because he's a 5 star on defense.  And Dann O'Neill was pretty close.  And LaLota is probably too new to football to be a starter anywhere as a true freshman, regardless of how athletic he is.  I doubt we get much more in the d-line for the 2009 class, but I would love to pick up another guy or 2 on both sides of the ball.

not sure right now but I could probably dig it up if you really cared. though i should have said "as high" rather than "higher". also, here is what Sam Webb/detnews/scout has to say about Lalota:

Anthony LaLota, 6-6, 265, 4.65, The Hun School, (Princeton, N.J.): Committed to Michigan. LaLota will be the highest-rated prospect in attendance (@ MSU game)  as the No. 4 OT in the country, No. 28 player overall, and a five-star recruit, according to Scout.com.

According to the recruiting sites this is one of the best o-line classes UM has had in a while, but the two best o-linmen want to play D (where they are also very good).

i dont know i am just a little bit more optimistic. I like the young guys we're going to get. I know this has been said already but HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU FORGET ZIRBEL???? o well.

mhwaldm

Aright i clearly forgot about injured zirbel. and i thought moosman was a sr. With both of them on the depth chart, im curious to see what they do with the line. Moosman and schilling have prob been our best two Olinemen this year so i doubt they get moved. Molk has been physically dominated by the majority of our oppenents, as he has been pushed into the backfield countless times, leaving McGuffie out to dry.

No question the left side of our line is going to look way different than this year. Zirbel, no doubt, steps in to play LT. I expect Barnum to start at LG b/c he has some experience from this yr, although its definately possible that Wermers takes his spot. That leaves Dan Oneal, Mealer, Wermers, Koury, Dorrestein, Huyge on the bench. Id love to see one of the them get converted to center to replace Molk (maybe Wermers or Barnum).

Lalota i think def gonna end up ad DE. I expect Roh to redshirt b/c hes 230 lbs and way too small to play at this level. Id like to see him come a semester early to get in some time with child-eating, wolf-raising Barwis. Id also like to see forcier come a semester early b/c Rich Rod has had to simplify the playbook b/c it was too complicated for all the freshman to pick up. Hopefully if he gets some time in he could see some early action. As for Lalota, he might be forced into the starting role if Graham leaves. Banks isnt good enough to be a starter.

Who ever put Jenkins on there depth chart, im crossin my fingers with you.

As for Campbell, im banking on the fact that he will recommit. Even though hes been ranked by scout as a 5 star Dline, a lot of what i have read has projected him as an Olineman. And to be completely honest, even though we are clearly deeper on the Oline, i consider it a much greater area of need. Weve seen the tremendous downside of having a weak Oline. And weve seen how even a great Dline can be nuetralized by quick passes and spread offenses. I think Campbell could have a greater impact on the Oline. Maybe im just crazy, but i think think that any RB and QB can succeed with a dominant Oline blocking. And McGuffie needs good blocking upfront so that he can get into the secondary and utilize his open field speed. I think it really depends on how well Dan Oneal is developing. Schilling will be a junior next season and Zirbel will be a redshirt junior. we need to start planning ahead for there departures so we dont have a situation like this year where we suddenly wake up and have no decent Olinemen. If Dan Oneal and Mealer can hold down the Oline, Campbell might end up on the Dline, next to martin. But we really have no idea how the two redshirts are doing. If there not up to par, we might see Campbell redshirt next yr, and backup Schilling during his final yr in 2010.

Hannibal.

I have to say that Graham is probably gone.  That means our two-deep for the defense looks pretty scary next year.  Scary as in, like, scary for Michigan fans.

i believe your right, dutch is listed as a sr. But my biggest concern on the defense, despite the very slim pickings at Dline is the linebacking core. If weve learned anything from the last two weeks its that a great Dline can be neutralized by a mobile QB and intelligent playcalling (quick short passes). I think our losses at Dline will be less of an issue than it is generally considered, even if graham leaves. Jamison, Johnson, and Taylor have all underperformed compared to expectation. In my opinion, Martin is a step up on the interior line. Jamison was far less effective than his potential suggested. He, taylor, and johnson have all been nonfactor over the past few games. Van Bergen will likely start at one side of the Dline. Sagesse will takeover for one of the lost DTs. It will be interesting to see wut happens with the other DE. Either one of the recruits (Lalota or Roh) or Banks. Roh likely will redshirt due to his size, so well see wut happens there.

Based on recent talk, were expected to land 1-3 additional Olinemen (Chris Freeman, Travis Bonds, Quinton Washington). These are all relatively good recruits, which leads me to believe that if Will Campbell recommits, as he is expected to, he will likely see early action at DT behind Sagesse, if he doesnt start right away.

As I said, my defensive worries are at linebacker. All three have played extremely poorly both in run support, and in pass coverage. Even Mouton was a converted safety, initially recognized for his pass coverage abilities, has been exposed in the pass game. The OLB's have been unable to shut down the sideline and screen passes. Obi Ezeh, who showed great potential last yr, seems to have regressed.

This being said, we dont have any terrific LB prospects or recruits. Fitzgerald was the lone four star linebacking recruit in the 2008 class, followed by none in the 2009 class (unless Jelani Jenkins answers the michigan prayers.) Meanwhile, Fitzgerald has only seen action this yr on special teams, which was a fantastic way to burn a potential redshirt yr (very Lloyd Carr-esk). Hopefully he will develope, but that still leaves us relatvely low expectation for the future.

This is rather painful to consider, when you compare to the current linebacking core to that of the 2006 team (Burgess, David Harris, Crable), who were all NFL draft picks.
