Practice #2: Drevno coaches the OL

Submitted by massblue on

Here is the video of Drevno working on the OL.

Experts can let us know if he is doing anything different than Funk.

I really liked the statement that every detail is planned and that no time is wasted.

This is the most important offensive position/group for us this year IMO. QB is obviously murky, but if the OL is even halfway decent, we should be able to run it effectively and ease the pressure on whoever is the QB. I have a lot of faith in Durkin ( who btw is the oldest looking 36 year-old man I've ever seen) and Mattison to make this defensive unit one of the top defenses in the country, which would also help out the offense if they can create turnovers.

during the MGoBlog roundtable on WTKA, he said that when he attended practices under the prior regime, a large portion of the players were frequently just standing around. Assuming he didn't just happened to be there at odd times, I think it speaks to how poorly prepared the team often looked during the past three seasons. A coaching staff that can't manage and plan the limited amount of practice time they've got so that the players are maximizing the amount of work they're doing both physically and mentally is probably not going to be very good at getting the fundamentals across.

Brian's observation after observing one practice under JH is that things are now radically different—very little standing around, and everybody's running.

Harbaugh's comment in the press conference about why it's great to be the head coach: "I can coach any position." He sees everything and knows how to fix anything. Contrast to Hoke who prefers to coach D-line and segment the coaching process.

I don't want to shit on Brady every chance I get for the last four years, but honestly, the difference between this staff and the last is absolutely massive. To use a Michigan hockey example, it seems like upgrading from Giordano to Berenson. Or like upgrading from Fickell to Meyer.

Come on... I think we can clearly say that Harbaugh is way above Hoke and not compare it to what people said about RR to Hoke. Past mid level NCAA coach to Mac level coach. or Mac level coach to NFL multiple NFC title and SB (appearance) coach. This time I think its more legit. Not to say that failure this time would be a much bigger let down.

I love the attention to detail, the emphasis on efficiency.  Always trying to get even 1% better, even 1 mph faster.

It manifests intself in little things like making sure every practice minute and square foot of space gets used efficiently.

That's what all those miscellaneous hires are all about, from the extra film analysts to the Team Mom.  Make the best use of your limited time and resources.

In one of the voiceovers you could see Drevno was working with Mason Cole on his head placement. The little things. Loved the comment about no little kids go around working on their wide base, all pretend they're Tyrone Wheatley.

I'm excited about the offensive line. I believe the unit takes a huge step forward this year and might be the strength of the offense.

Have to believe that the O-Line has the potential to take a big step forward next year. There's a ton of talent there right now and a lot of returning experience, and now it's got a coach who's an OL guru. I think Drevno sent most of, if not his entire offensive line from the 49ers to the Pro Bowl 2-3 years ago.

I'm not expecting an army of Jake Long clones, but I think they could become a pretty formidable unit by season's end. Maybe even the strength of the offense. And that, by proxy, will make our run game better, and give whoever is under center that much more time to work with. All starts up front.

I love his comment about how nobody is born being an O lineman, that little kids don't go play in the yard and pretend to be OL, they pretend to be QBs, WRs, and RBs.

OL is a learned skill through technique and repetition.

damn coach drev just has that look in his eyes; borderline crazy, i love it....btw, has anyone seen a highlight of a shane completed pass further than 3 yards?

I can just see all our rivals disliking this guy in 3-4 years with his intensity levels. He's exactly the kind of toughness our program needs.  Obviously I don't want him to be an "unnecessary roughness" asshole though.

The offensive line was meshing very well towards the end of last season.

The emergence of Drake Johnson and his ability to hit holes and cut helped a lot as well.

Something that Harbaugh must get into our running backs heads is that they need to be able to read and react better to what is happening blocking wise.     Derrick Green was starting to get better at that and showed signs at Rutgers.   Drake Johnson did as well.

Maybe every play doesn't go for a bunch of yards, but 3-4 yards a pop makes everything a lot easier.

Drake made the difference.  He was, when healthy, the best back on the active roster....far more explosive than Green, Smith or Hayes.  Its a real shame that he was injured again.

Im looking for Ty Issac to take the #1 spot this year and get the bulk of the carries.  The other RBs are just servicable at best.

As my old high school ball coach used to say "you sonsabitches need to attack lower than the other sonsabitches." We had far less technique than a caliber coach like Drevno could provide, but lower (exclamation) was always a pretty good rule.

Thanks, educational. Perhaps I heard the phrase pad level, but I listened to so much freakin Metallica and Megadeth back in the day it may hav been drowned out. Lower most def stuck, incl when we had to run through "chutes" of metal pipes to get jacked by a stronger dude at the other end trying to choke you via shoulder pads.
