Poutasi to Utah

Submitted by jerseyblue on

OT Jeremiah Poutasi committed to Utah. He was a guy we started looking at recently as an option if we whiffed on the entire trio of Garnett, Kozan, and Diamond. His offer list included Oklahoma St, Boise St. and a bunch of the Pac-12 schools.

Here are a few reasons I can think of:

1. Utah has won 2 BCS Bowl games and just joined the Pac-12 this year

2. The school and the state have a large Polynesian population

3. Utah just began construction on a new 80,000 sq. ft. football facility

4. Kyle Whittingham is an excellent coach

5. Utah has had a handful of offensive linemen drafted since Whittingham took over

6. Why not?

I don't think this should matter too much. If you guys read Garnett's interview today, I think we might be in the lead for him. It's mere speculation, of course, but I think its down between us and Stanford. In the end, I think his friendship with Magnuson will be the difference maker, and with his potential commitment, we will have an absolutely monstrous, Wisconson-esque offensive line in the making.

Best of luck to Poutasi, though.

While Garnett interviews always seem positive about the school he's being interviewed about, I still tend to agree.  Nothing scientific or factual here, just a sense.  In addition to the Magnuson element, Garnett is smart enough to see that Stanford is most likely heading down while we're heading up, Michigan will bring tons of exposure and he gets to be part of what has the potential to be a truly awesome offensive line.  Kalis, Magnuson, Garnett, Braden, Stacey, Bars and the best of 4 other years of recruiting around him.  No apparent downside other than distance from home, which doesn't seem to be an issue.

Sorry, just remembered this was a Poutasi thread.  Got excited!

While this is a Poutasi thread, I too am excited about where we sit with Garnett.  While he hasn't declared UM his leader, I think he sees in UM what all the current commits saw when they made their decision.  UM is headed in the right direction, and this class is loaded with the talent neccessary to make UM a program that is capable of competing for a BCS championship year in and year out.

I know rankings don't mean a whole lot, but this bunch is ranked in the top 5 for every site, and can only go up with the guys that they are recruiting to fill the last slots.  Stanford is just outside the top 15, albeit, the 2nd best class in the PAC 12, but that won't win them national championships in my humble biased opinion.
