Player Participation (and Statistical Interests) after 2 games

Submitted by milk-n-steak on September 12th, 2022 at 1:10 PM

I was wondering how many players have played so far so I did some digging on mgoblue.com and found that:

  • 103 different players have played at least one of the first two games.
    • Freshmen Participation:
      • 19 have played
        • 13 both games:  D Clemons, W Johnson, Sabb, Micah Pollard, A Walker, D Moore, K Jones, T Morris, C Loveland, CJ Stokes, J Rolder, M Graham, K Grant
        • 6 just one:  A Orji, D Spurlock, M Klein, Myles Pollard, N Andrighetto, C Jones,
      • 17 have not played
    • Sophomores  26 have played, 9 have not
    • Juniors  20 have, 5 have not
    • Seniors  18 have, 4 have not
    • Grad/5th Students 20 have, 2 have not
    • No players have played wearing numbers
      • #38, 43, 46, 57, 59, 64, 66, 70, 71, 73, 75, 92, 93 are on the roster.
      • 63, 67, 68, 69, 97 are not worn by anyone according to the roster.
      • Retired #11, 21, 47, 48, 87, 98 are not worn

Statistically, some things I found interesting:

  • 4 QBs have attempted passes and 3 of them have completions of over 50 yards)
  • 13 different players have a rushing attempt
    • 7 have rushing TDs
    • 5 different players have rushes of 20+ yards.
  • 16 different players have a reception - 4 have receiving TDs
    • 10 have 2 or more (led by Bell with 7 receptions)
    • Max Bredeson has the second highest yds/rec on the team (29.5 to Roman Wilson's 35.7)
  • In all, 10 different players have scored TDs
  • 3 different kickers have scored (Moody, Anderson, Doman)
  • 38 different players have recorded tackles
    • 33 have at least one unassisted tackle
    • 12 different players have at least 0.5 TFL (led by Mike Morris with 3)
    • 11 different players have at least 0.5 sacks (led by 5 players with 1)

Perhaps after UConn I'll check again if work gets boring.  Go Blue

Interesting. Thank you for doing this.

So there are 36 Freshmen on the roster. How many redshirts?

10 different players with TDs. So at least one has a rushing and a receiving TD. Who leads the pack in TDs?

Not sure that this shows anything other than that we played two absolutely terrible teams, got up quickly on both, and emptied the benches for large chunks of the game.

That said, I would be curious to see how our player participation plays out over the course of the season.  Many of these kids will play in 4 or less games so as to preserve their redshirt years.

I had a little time and it seemed like an interesting question so I checked mgoblue.com for participation for 2021

Results:

109 different players saw the field in 2021

  • 25 Freshmen
    • 13 Freshmen just appeared in one game
    • 3 appeared in two games
    • 2 appeared in three games
    • 1 appeared in four
    • 6 saw significant action
  • 26 Sophomores
  • 26 Juniors
  • 18 Seniors
  • 15 listed as Graduate or 5th Year

Of the 25 Freshmen, here's how Games Participated went:

So, for Freshmen participation, we might be a little ahead of that pace.

It's great if even the redshirt guys can get more time on the field.

Should have added this:

6 Freshmen didn't play in any games in 2021:

Davis Warren (QB)

Tommy Doman (K/P)

Trevor Andrews (DB)

Noah Howes (TE)

Alexander Lidback (LB)

Peter Simmons (OL)

Ike Iwunnah (DL)

Warren, Doman, and Howes have played in one game this year.

The others are all still on the roster but have not yet seen game action.

Thanks for this and I look forward further editions. Don't know why I've always been a roster geek… It comes in handy when I'm stuck waiting in line somewhere and I try to count in my head how many freshmen have burned their redshirts or some such thing.

Interesting info - thanks for the summary!  The tough thing is that they include walk-ons in this data so you're not really sure how this translates to a true depth chart.

It does appear that those freshmen who didn't appear in both games are on track to redshirt.  That does seem to make sense based on their positions and development also.

A good number of freshmen getting valuable experience and not just in garbage time (well, I guess all game against Hawaii was garbage time).

Did anyone notice Will Johnson doesn't put his mouthpiece in during the play? It just dangles from his facemask. Not sure why he wouldn't have it in his mouth.

About half the players in college football do this, usually DB's and WR's it seems.  It's probably become a fad at this point, so a lot of copycatting going on.  If having your mouthpiece in does help safety-wise, you'd think it'd be a requirement.  It does look silly with all these guys running around with their mouthpieces flopping in the wind.  There was an Alabaman DB last year that kept his stuck in a hole in the back of his helmet at all times.

Surprised to not see Zeke Berry on the list. I cannot recall if he was getting much camp buzz, but a lot of folks thought he would be pushing hard for the 2-deep at safety or nickel.  Maybe he is injured? - not that it is likely Harbaugh shares any info.

No Damani Dent either, but at least with him there was speculation of an injury based off of a cryptic tweet about perseverance (or similar) from him during camp.

Was hoping to see both get some reps this season.  I don’t think we are likely to lose any of Paige, Moten, and Moore after this season but safety depth is non-existent behind them except for the freshmen.

They mentioned on the broadcast that he was potentially dealing with an injury - sometime after his big catch and TD score.

That is why Stokes got so much run early in the second half with Cade when you might have expected to see Donavan.  FWIW I did not see anything on rewatch that indicated he was hurt -- maybe a delayed thing from the hard landing on the catch.

Definitely something to monitor but shouldn't be a huge deal until maybe Iowa?
