I think the article is misleading. That's what people called him back home, thus it's not a self-proclaimed nickname. I tend to frown heavily upon giving yourself a nickname.

In the early days of the Every Three Weekly, one writer was lamenting that so many people had nicknames but he didn't. The conversation went as follows.
"Fine than just give yourself a nickname?"
Him: "You can't just give yourself a nickname then you'd call yourself something cool like 'Captain,' or 'Batman.'"
"Wait you think that's cool?"
And that is how one E3W writer earned the nickname "Captain Batman" which was later shortened to "CB"
