OT/SIAP: Haskins Not Attending Draft

Submitted by FauxMo on April 10th, 2019 at 6:58 PM

Apparently, his stock is plunging fast and he doesn't want to be "sad guy with sad face" on TV at the draft, so he's not going. Good. I hope he goes un-drafted.

I always find this late breaking moves to be such BS. What’s changed in the last two or three weeks that would cause it?

That aside, I think he has potential to be a great NFL QB. I’d pick him over most of the other top prospects. Regardless, just glad he’s gone.

According to Ryan Day, Haskins told him weeks ago, before the “slide” rumors hit that he wanted to be with his family for the draft.  I totally get that and I’m surprised they get the people the do have show up.   If you don’t go #1, do you really want 3rd rate broadcasters speculating on where you will go as they painfully try to fill the minutes before the next selection?   Being surrounded by your family and friends would  seem to be a much more enjoyable option.

Doesn't "slide" just mean a team is really interested and they are hoping other pass so they don't have to use picks or talent to move up in the top 10 to get him? I would take him over Kyler Murray. I just don't get the infatuation with a 5'9 QB.

I mean could be many reasons...

Maybe he got caught with weed or a video of him doing bong hits or a line of coke off a hooker is about to leak and NFL teams have it.

maybe his test results came back with a medical condition or something that hasn't leaked yet. If teams are removing him from the board there is definitely some issue with him that they have found

I wish cameras were banned from the green room where these kids are.  By definition, 1 of the 20 or so kids invited to the NFL Draft will be picked last among those 20.  But there's no reason to have a camera there to catch his reaction to "slipping."

Even for players who "slip", simply being drafted is memorable.  20 years later, I can still vividly remember getting the call for my first "real" post-college job.  Felt great.

There is a reason for the camera, to provide dramatic moments.  The NFL draft is a cash cow for the NFL during the otherwise boring off season, so of course they're going to ensure all that sells is viewed.

Look, these aren't pimple faced HS students any longer, they're big boys, adults, that have made adult decisions.  One of those decisions is to be part of the NFL drama, of which there is absolutely no obligation.  They are there by choice, come what may.

That's fair, and the invited players are getting an expense-free trip to NYC (or wherever it is this year in the NFL's effort to monetize the event), so I shouldn't feel too sorry for them.

I guess I just have no use for the cameras honing in on the player who is "slipping" while Mel Kiper and Rich Eisen bray about "oh, the emotion this player is going through right now" as they try to read his body language.

LOL. Great, because Don Brown stoke the Nardizzi theory of PI as much as possible and convince people you are a genius.

He a good enough QB, but no OSU QB has done anything in the NFL since...? Even with Troy Smith and their other stars.

Also, no Urban Meyer QB has done anything in the NFL, besides Alex Smith (very solid QB), but that’s all.

Lol we've had like 12 different QBs since Brady. Of course he's the GOAT, but using him as a "look at out former QBs!" is a just disingenuous. The last time he suited up for Michigan was FOREVER ago.

Henne is okay, and Ruddock could also get a shot.

Fact of the matter is there are 32 starting jobs in the NFL. And when there are franchise QBs starting for 10-20 years each, it makes it significantly harder to make it as a starter in the league.

To me, if I need a QB, Haskins is a kid I draft. He fits the mold. If it doesn't work out, get another QB next year. I know it's frowned upon, but you really need to draft a QB every year until you get it right.

I don’t get the “no OSU Qb has ever” nonsense.    Troy Smith and their other stars were entirely different QB’s.   This is the first pass first, don’t run and get hurt QB of any talent they’ve ever had.  Meyer ran his QB’s previously but Day changed that approach. If you watched any of their games you see he doesn’t run the ball and was an elite passer.  Apples and Oranges

File this under “oh my god, who gives a shit?” Probably just wants to spend the day with his family.

The Giants are still taking him. He’s still a top-10 pick, and I’d take him over any other QB in the draft. Yes, over Murray, too.

Not necessarily. What gets you fired is if the pick doesn’t work out. Doesn’t matter if the QB you pick is a statue in the backfield, or if he’s got Denard-esque athleticism. If Haskins leads the Giants to more Super Bowls and Murray flames out, who do you think gets fired in that scenario?

I know Murray has more upside, but all that matters are wins and losses. If Haskins wins more, then he was the better pick.

This grown man is going to probably be a bust. Nothing against him personally, I just think he will struggle to be good in the league. He is not a big play qb (which is what the NFL has become.. see Kyler Murray) and his lack of accuracy and mobility will be a huge issue at that level. I would not take him until the 3rd round.

His accuracy?  He completed 70% of his passes.  He was known for being very accurate and hitting receivers in stride where they could maximize yards after the catch.

His issue is poise under intense rush but to be fair, the guy played one college season.

Or you know, we could all be adults and not wish ill will toward a guy who has the temerity to play for another school and be good at football.

He's going to get drafted.  He rather hang out with his family than sit in a green room somewhere while a bunch of talking heads analyze his body language as names are read by an asshole at a podium.  Not a hard decision.

Jesus. You take sports/fandom way to serious if you hope the kid goes undrafted.

Fact is, he whipped our asses and 100% deserves to go as high as possible in this draft.

Joe Thomas went third in the draft, and he spent the day fishing in Wisconsin with his dad.  Learned what happened when he came in.  People should do what they feel comfortable doing, not what the league or network prefers.

Apparently, his stock is plunging fast

Maybe he'll go back to OSU, and make their new transfer QB have to transfer again.

I heard it's not safe at OSU . . .

I'm not sure why you would give a fake reason for why Haskins isn't attending the draft, especially because it isn't even mentioned in the article you pasted here. He planned to spend draft day with his family a while ago.

Even as a Buckeye fan, I'm not somebody who thinks Haskins is unquestionably the best QB in the draft so I can't comment on his draft stock. Still, I don't know why you would say something like that about a kid (the "hope he goes un-drafted" comment), regardless of the rivalry.

I've respected, and enjoyed, watching many Michigan players because the school somebody I've never met chooses to play football at is not a reason to wish ill on them. For example, in recent years, I've really liked Devin Bush, Mike McCray, Jake Butt, Jake Ryan, and Devin Funchess. They never did or said anything publicly to make me dislike them, and they were great players. Haskins has never done or said anything publicly to make him dislikable either.

Still amazed Kyler Murray is regarded as the better prospect and the guy most likely to go #1. Not seeing it. Haskins looks the part of an NFL QB

I don't think his stock is "plunging fast".  The only thing I sense is the Giants, long rumored to being a sure thing to take him, might be considering other options.

Can't blame him for not wanting to attend that ridiculous event - he'll just have to miss the Goodell man-hug.

Some guys want to go up on the stage in a suit. Other guys want to hang out with family and friends, a lot easier to do that at home or at a party you throw yourself rather than getting enough tickets for everyone to the draft, inflated hotel rooms in the draft city, etc.

Unlike others in this thread, I have no bias or dog in this fight and I will call it like it is;

Haskins is a stud QB with an accurate rocket arm and good QB mind... and will be a star in the NFL mark it down.  The Lions would do well to pick him, however he is probably on the way to NE to study under Brady then take over after Tom retires.
