OTish: Biff Poggi names Ryan Osborn as DC at Charlotte
As you may recall, Ryan Osborn was an off-field assistant for Michigan last season, earning much praise for his work with the DL, and chose to go to the Ravens this season with Mike Macdonald. With the way our program is ascending, it's clear we'll probably have to hire 1-2 assistants every year for various reasons, so this is yet another name to watch in the coming years.\

Was he the one with a backwards cap always in the turnover pic???

He was with the Ravens this year. Were there turnover pics last year?
December 5th, 2022 at 7:26 PM ^
yes. the buffs are new this year, but the pics started last year.

Great for Osborn and UM. He was allegedly a great developer of DE talent and recruiter, so if he works out that's a future UM DC.

Came here just to say this. This will be good "training" for him.

I guess Jim Knowles wasn't available.

Might be after the New Year.

Ryan Osborn is extremely well regarded at Michigan and has been around Ravens style defense for a few years now. He would be someone who could come in and replace Minter. Assuming Minter moves on one day. Hopefully not for a long time.

At this point, Osborne has only served as a primary position coach for one year at any level of football (2020 at Tennessee Martin. At all his other stops, including Baltimore and Michigan, he was basically an assistant to an assistant. Let’s see him have a bit of success where he has primary responsibility before anointing him the Michigan defensive coordinator in waiting.
For comparison
Macdonald was with the Ravens for 5 years including 3 as the primary linebacker coach.
Minter was a defensive coordinator at: Indiana State, Georgia State and Vanderbilt as well as spending a year at Baltimore coaching defensive backs.

Wait - did he coach Okie at Tennesee Martin? That's sort of a random connection.

Looks like they would have overlapped in 2020

Not to toot my own horn, but I mentioned in the thread regarding Biff accepting the job at Charlotte that he should definitely take a look at Oz.
By all accounts he was a great coach, loved by players and recruits. Should be a good addition to Biff’s staff. Though he does lack experience as an on-field coach so I’m sure there will be some bumps as he gets his feet wet, especially as a playcaller.
Great to see former M staffers moving up in the coaching world. Someone with more time on their hands than I have should do a “where are they now” post/diary for former Harbaugh analysts/coaches. Feels like there has been quite a bit of upward movement which bodes well for future hiring needs.

Could someone explain why Charlotte is the 49ers, please?
December 5th, 2022 at 8:34 PM ^
Because Charlotte had long sought a state university, got one, and the state almost took it away. The school was saved in 1949.
December 5th, 2022 at 8:51 PM ^
Coincidentally, the school is also located off of NC Highway 49 and the Charlotte area has a history of gold mining that precedes the California gold rush
December 5th, 2022 at 9:02 PM ^
So that would mean BEFORE ‘49. Maybe they should be the “gold rushers before the 49ers”
December 5th, 2022 at 9:08 PM ^
Just allows them to incorporate the gold miner logos alongside the more popular ‘49 reference and still have some local meaning along with the 1949 reference to the school being saved. Just a cool coincidence.

right? they should totally be the spiders.... they could have a web on their helmets and the mascot could be a pig named Wilbur!

Is Charlotte a big time program?
Imagine the coaching jobs Gattis could have had if he remained.
December 5th, 2022 at 9:06 PM ^
They’re an FBS school that is preparing to transition into the AAC. Though they haven’t enjoyed much success to this point as an FBS school. So I guess it depends on your definition of “big time program.”

Charlotte is the school that is I think still officially University of North Carolina at Charlotte. When I was in high school in Charlotte in the late 70s I think it was primarily more of a “commuter” school, but has grown rapidly in the last 20 years and is the second largest UNC system school….NC State is the largest and Chapel Hill 3rd. The football program didn’t exist until about 10 years ago. I think they played in a national championship soccer game a decade or so ago (losing to UNC), but probably the biggest sports moment in school history was getting to the 1977 Final Four. They (go ahead and neg away) beat Johnny Orrs top ranked and defending runner up Michigan in the regional finals and were one insane basket away from making the finals where they would have faced UNC. That UNCC team was really good and starred Cedric Maxwell who was the MVP in the 1981 NBA finals. You can see why they decided to start going by just “Charlotte” a few years ago though.
Eventual champion Marquettes final shot in the semifinals.
