OT - Wisconsin equivalent of MHSAA takes Participation Medal a step further, bans innocuous chants

Submitted by FormAFarkingWall on

The Post-Crescent in Appleton, Wis., obtained an email sent from WIAA director of communications Todd Clark to member schools in December, describing what should be considered taunting and disrespectful actions that are unacceptable, including “you can’t do that,” “fundamentals,” “air ball,” “there’s a net there,” “sieve,” “we can’t hear you,” “scoreboard,” and “season’s over.”

I guess dead silence is what they are looking for, or perhaps an increase in FT percentage.  Fortunately MHSAA has no plans to follow suit.

Don't want the croud to taunt you for shooting an air-ball?

Don't put up an air-ball.  And if you do, you probably deserve to get taunted because you stink.  And yes I played high-school basketball.

Note, I'm talking VARSITY basketball. If you are taunting 8-year olds you are a moron.

In the REAL world, people don't bother taunting you for sucking.  They just fire your ass and move on.

If you can't handle a little playful banter, then there's a bigger problem than the banter itself.

This society worries way too damn much about hurting people's feelings. Everything has to be politically correct, everyone has to be included, otherwise it's not fair, or its racist, or its some other crap.

I don't mean to be political on any level on this, but we're raising our kids to be wusses if we have to shelter them from hearing the likes of "scoreboard" and "airball." If they can't handle some gentle heckling, then they've got their own problems to sort out.

I was in Madison in 1997 (?) when Maurice Taylor broke his nose and bled all over Wisconsin's court. Despite the obviously serious injury he had, even I had to chuckle at the loud "Shoot him like a horse" chant inside the Field House. There are bigger fish to fry than trying to tame the fans.

The bleacher bums I went to high school games with would have started let them have it the next game.. Probably boycott the games until they overturned the rule as well

While there are bigger problems in the world than these chants, I'm not sure that attempting to ban them is one of them. Is the MHSAA supposed to encourage those cheers? Just ignore them and do your thing.

Also, whining about participation medals when they have nothing to do with the topic just makes you look like a jerk.
