OT: Wis-Neb watching game may give you a headache

Submitted by Ziff72 on

This is going to be one tough watch on TV.  Never have 2 schools played with such exact colors and uniform styles.   Does anybody know if Wisco is going Sparty for this game and inventing a uniform color?   This is the 1 time I would be in favor of those hideous combat jerseys.   If you are not familiar with the teams uniforms they use a pretty similar red, their helmets are pretty much the same and they be inverse with Neb in red pants/white shirts and Wiscy will be red/white pants.  I would not be surprised if Wiscy went all red and Nebraska went all white to help out.

Added bonus for Wiscy fans is you won't be able to tell if Neb has taken over the stadium.

I seriously think the teams may have a problem figuring out who to pass to and it may cause an interception in this game.

I thought the thread was going to be how he was going to get a headache from watching all of the contact.  It might be a good drinking game to shotgun a beer every time someone has to be helped off the field.

Yes, their fans will be in black.

Nebraska received over 20,000 official ticket requests for an allotment of 3,000 tickets. That's official requests, which obviously doesn't include fans who go the Stubhub route and was also this summer, before fans knew both teams would be in the top 10, the game would be on ABC in prime time, Gameday, etc. I read that UW is preparing for as many as 25,000 Nebraska fans and will set up the Fieldhouse as a viewing center for those who could not get tickets

I manage to get into town from NYC for most of the big games and will be there Saturday.  This is the toughest ticket in school history. I've never seen the market like this. Obviously there is significant demand from both sides, but I'll be very interested to see how many Husker fans make it into Camp Randall. So far they are not afraid to spend and are driving the market up pretty high.

I think I saw somewhere that Barry Alvarez, who played for the Cornhuskers under Tommy O IIRC, wanted UW to emulate UN.  So he made sure the UW uniform and helmet somewhat resembled UN, although it historically the helmet sort of did anyway (the original "W" on the helmet was just like the "N" is now -- sans serif, straight lines, very boring, not the "motion W" they have).  Went so far as to emulate the style of play, the big brutus lines and power running game -- MANBALL without a spread option in sight.  UN got away from that of course.

I say UN knowing its NU because NU will always be the Wildcats to me.

According to this article, Alvarez claims he wasn't trying to "mimic" Nebraska's uniform:

Though it may look like it, Alvarez didn't copy Nebraska's uniform style in the way that two of his colleagues — Hayden Fry at Iowa and Bill Snyder at Kansas State — did with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys.

"I wasn't trying to mimic Nebraska,'' Alvarez said. "I just wanted a clean uniform.

"I wanted a helmet logo that when somebody saw it they would know it was us. Then two stripes on the helmet, two on the sleeves of the shirt and two on the pants.''

As the article makes clear, Alvarez did model the Wisconsin program after Nebraska, but it was the Nebraska program of Bob Devaney, not Osborne. Alvarez played under Devaney in the mid-1960s. Osborne didn't become Nebraska's coach until 1973 (succeeding Devaney).

The only time NU has gone all red was against Oklahoma in 1986 - that was a particularly painful (and freezing) day. End Zone Jones was indeed the top back (but didn't have a great day), and Broderick Thomas guaranteed victory, but they couldn't stop OU from scoring 10 points in the last 90 seconds. Jamelle Holieway to Keith Jackson was on a loop in my nightmares for weeks. So yeah, kill the all-red look with fire.

The all-whites have shown up a bit more often (and more recently), but they don't have quite the same searingly painful memories associated with them. They just look dopey, that's all.

Considering Wisconsin will be wearing their Home Red jersey's, and Nebraska will be wearing their away white jersey's ... it shouldn't be that tough for the QB to distinguish who his receiver is.

Indiana and Wisconsin are fairly similar, and I don't think the QB is throwing to the other team everytime they play, because he is confused as hell.

you were implying that both teams were so stupid that they would forget who was on their team, but then I remembered that coloring was the first class they had to take freshman year.  All should be good assuming they know the difference between red and white.

I thought this was gonna be about the noise (decibels)...Bucky is an Adidas school so I doubt they'll have Nike pro combat. Camp Randall and Madison are going to be insane and i'm excited to be able to attend...that will give me a headache! Im sure it won't, but i'm hoping this eases the pain of missing UTL.

When I first joined MGoBlog I wrote a similar post considering conference expansion based on everybody's uniforms...I know, goofy and all that. But the point was that the B1G had a bunch of distincitve looking teams within the league. While Indiana and Wiscy both wear red, they have different colored helmets. Michigan and Iowa may be the most similar looks in the league - until Nebraska joined.

I think the only other league with this level of colorized diversity was the Pac 10. Now they stand alone.

Also, if a lot of you look at your other red-on-red examples, they come from different leagues as each other. So cut Ziff some slack

I didn't give it much thought until the game came up, but I started thinking how many teams only have 1 color scheme and how that sucks uniform wise.  It seems it is almost split half and half with teams that have 2 colors and teams with 1 color.   In general teams with 2 colors have much better uniforms.
